The Press and Banner ABBEYILiLil!;, ?. U. ^^Publiahed every Wednesday at ?2 a year in advance. Mr. R0SWELL T. LOGAN, of Charleston, is not authorized to take advertisements for this newspaper. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1893. Tbe Kind of Money that We Receive. This Is the sort of money which Mr. J. Allen Smith paid to the Press and Banner office yesterday evening, We copy the wording in j full, without in any way attempting to copy tbe form and style of the same: No. 1. Abbeville Mercantile Association Certificate. Series A. Abbeville, S. C. This certifies. That the persons and firms composing the Abbeville Mercantile Association have deposited wltb J. Allen Smith. BeDj. S. Barnwell and Wm. H. Parker, Trustees of said Mercantile Association, securities to the value of One Dollar and Fifty <Jents, to secure to the bearer hereof the payment oi the sum of One Dollar In lawful money or tue United States, payable on or before the first clay of January, 18W. This certificate Is Issued In accordance with the proceedings of u meeting of said Association, field on the 21tl> day of August, 1893. and will be received In payment of debts by the Banks and Merchants of the Town of Abbeville. J. Allen Smith, BenJ. s. Barnwell, Wm. H. Parker, Trustees. The above money Is current Lere now, and will be accepted by our business men in all their transactions. The bank receives it on deposit, the Building and Loan Associations will sell their property and receive it In payment. In fact, we know of no line of business in which It will not be eagerly sought. Persons who desire to borrow it mast apply to the Trustees, wltb whom the necessary collaterals must be left. The FhII Trade. Our merchants are making active preparations for the Fall trade. The scarcity of money and the high price of bacon in the Spring setonr people to eoonom!z>ng, t.nd as a result , their indebtedness Is small. Their energy has been abundantly rewarded by abundant crops of all sorts. The Javorable seasons have combined to produce the best crops that we have had In many years. ') The county, it seems to us, will make corn enough for man and beast, and the yield of cotton Is all that good seasons and attentive labor can make It. These conditions make a hopeful outlook for business generally, and especially at Ab bevllle, where Ibe railroad shops are Id coarse of erection, and which, when finished, will bring many new people to our community, thereby quickening all the arteries of trade, and inspiring new hopes In the hearts of all. The outlook for Abbeville Is most cheering, and all are looking hopefully to the future. The Wlnthrop Advertising. At the rlBk of being considered Impertinent we again ask Professor Johnson and Mr. Robwell T. Logan to make a full and explicit statement of the expenditure of money for advertising Wlnthrop examinations. If the expenditure was faithfully and carefully made, we see no reason why they should not state the names of the papers, the number ol insertions in each, and the amount paid to each for the advertisement. Judging from what transpired at the Press Association, aided by what Professor Johnson said In bis letter to us, we believe tliat neither Professor Johnson nor Mr. Roswell T. Logan will ever make the statement, for the simple reason that we believe that statement would noi look well in print. If It is all rigbt, they could publish It. The public, like ourself, are left to draw their own conclusions. Gei tlemeu,lf your transaction Is all right, show up. Cotton and Warehouse*. A proposition in various quarters 1b for planters to store their cotton and draw on It. The plan does not commend Itself to the Press and Banner. It seems better to sell the cotton as soon as It Is ready for market, and In such quantities as will supply the demand for money. The best Informed man In this country cannot safely predict the future price of cotton, and the wise farmer will not be mixed up with speculations and warehouses, where bo has no control of his own product. Tbe farmer who goes Into speculation on cotton nearly always beta on Its going higher, when the fact Is, It goes down as often as It goes up. The expenses are ever present. Don't go Into any speculation and aon't pledge your cotton for tbe needed money?better sell than to give warehouse keepers and monled middle men a chance at you. To Believe the Strain for Money. The Abbeville Mercbantlle Association have concluded to issue "certificate*" which a large majority of our people have determined to accept as money In the ordinary transactions with each other. Tbe "certlfl8a cates" will be received In a day or two and will be Issued, like money, to such persons as are willing to put up the necessary collaterI*'-/.! ale. Tbe certificates are redeemable on or beI'yi fore January 1, 18SM, and it is thought they " will do much to relieve the atlngenoy in tbe money market. If you owe anything at the Prees and Banner office for subscription, advertising, or Job work, Just bring the required | amount of certificates and the debt will be i settled. Thanks to All. Darin? the editor's two weeks absence at the Fair the Press and Banner was left in the ?*" bands of the printers and its correspondents. Tbelr work was most satisfactory done, and we return thanks to all. MERCHANTILE ASSOCIATION si ^ Temporary Relief from the Honey I Stringency. 9 We the undersigned banks and merchants P and business men of Abbeville hereby agree J to receive the certificates of the Mercbantlle k Association on deposit and In payment of I debts due us, and for goods sold. A.Smith's plantation, some six miles South of Abbeville, called at our office last Saturday to Inform us of an occurrence on his place. A few days ago lightning struck a tree to which his barbeu wire fence was attached. The lightning Instead of runniug Into the ground run on the wire in both directions from the tree, Bcorcblng vegetation on the way. On one way the fluid came to a gate and the other It came to a place where be had cut the wire for some purpose, aud there tore up the stump and ground. He thinks if he had not Erevlously broken the connection between Is barn and the wire, that bis stock would have been killed. He thluks that the barbed [ wire should In no Instance be nailed to a barn I or stable. Tne wire being a conductor, might convey the lightning to the barn or staole aud there do great damage to stock and houses. Andrew Adams was very much In earnest ss In his desire to thus warn others irom the [danger which he himself so narrowly escap ed,and we publish nis statement uiuimhb << possible that a knowledge of the circumstance may be of advantage lo somebody. A barbed wire Is about as Rood a conductor as the average lightning rod, and those who may be unable to put up lightning. rods lo draw the fluid to their houses may utilize the barbed wire with the same disastrous effect. Some people seem to be looking for danger and if lightning and the Sheriff go round their houses too long, they sometimes mortgage their premises to bring one and put up rods or wire fences to draw the other. Mortgages and wire fences may be depended to do tbelr work, sooner of later. Those who think there Is no hereafter may d?re Providence and the Sheriff, but the wise man will do no such thing. Mortgages bring the Sheriff, and lightning rods bring the deathdealing fluid, fresh from the clouds In which It was originally stored to purify the air, and to bring down the revivifying showers unon the lamlshlng crops and the parched earth. But those who wish to attract a little ot it to knock the life out ot tuuie.s, burn barnes and kill people can be accommodated bv putting up lightning rods to their dwellings and hitching barbed wires to their stables. There Is nothing like flshlug for a thing when you want it. Pjle*'? PtirttKraptiM. SOUTH CAROLINA. George S. Turner, of Spartanburg, was hanged on the 1st instant lor the murder ol Ed. Finger.
