Sorrow. ( KUa Wheeler Wilcox. The uses of sorrow I comprehend, | Better anil better at each year's end. Deeper and deeper I seem to see Why and wherefore It has to be. Only after the dark, wet days Do we full rejoice in the sun's bright rays. Sweeter the crust tastes after the fast. Than the sated gourmand's lined repast. And one who has dwelt with his griel alone Hears all tbo music in friendship's tone. 8n better and better I comprehend How sorrow ever would be our friend. About KaiIroa<l Dangers.Signal*. "What is the danger-signal V" asked Hal, who was beginning to consider these railroad signals almost as Important aud well worth knowing as those in which he drilled his foot-ball team. "Red for danger, green for caution, and white for safety ; flags by day and lanterns at night," replied the railroad uncle, adding : "I am sure you must have noticed men at road-crossings waving white flags to show that the track was clear, as your train rushed by ?? "Of course I have," answered Hal. "Or the watchman on sharp curves f*oo wQirincr orrppn fljiirw fm <U1U UIIUJWJ '""""6 fc,'-? o much as to say : 'You may go ahead, but you must do so with caution ?" "1 don't remember seeing tbem," responded Hal; "but I'll look out ior the green flags the very next time 1 ' go in the cars." "A red flag or a red light is imperative," continued Mr. Holdeu, ' and means, 'Sound the call for brakes aud stop at ouce.' There are other danger and cautionary signals I think you would be especially interested in," added his uncle; torpedoes aud fuses, I for instance. A toroedo upon the rail ' is one of the most Used and most reliable of all the danger-signals.""But I shouldn't thing it would be loud enough," objected Hal. "Why ? don't you use something louder?say can non-crackers ?'' "Oh, you are thinking of the little paper-wrapped torpedoes, such as children play with; but they are not the kind 1 mean. A railroad torpedo is a round tin box, just about the size of a silver dollar, tilled with percussion powder. Attached to it are two little leaden strips that can be bent under the edges of the rail, so as to hold the torpedo flrmly in position on top of it. In this position when a locomotive wheel strikes it with the force of a aitwifro-hammpr it exDlodes with a re port fully as loud as a cannon-cracker, I that can be plainly heard above all I other sounds of the train. It is a warning sufflcientto arouse theengineman, and to render him keenly alert: "If a train meets with any accident or obstruction that bids fair to cause a delay of more than a few seconds, the engineman sounds five short whistle blaste ,( ). On hearing this signal the rear brakeman must immediately run back a quarter of a mile or < so, and place a torpedo on one of the J rails that his train has just passed 1 over. Then, going back about two { hundred yards further, he places two t more torpedoes a rail's length apart. [ He then returns to the first torpedo, and, with his red flag in hand, stands there until the recall signal is sounded from his own train. On hearing this, he picks up and takes with him the single torpedo, but leaves the other two where tbey are. "These two torpedoes thus form a cautionary signal, and, translatei by . the next following engineman, mean :|. 'The train ahead of you has met with t, a delay. Move cautiously, and keep a ( a sharp lookout.' The single torpedo is an imperative warning to apply the t air-brakes, 'Shut ofl,' and 'Ke verse!' J ?in other words, 'Stop at once, for ? there is danger immediately ahead.' T m m m a A CnrelfNM Pout lire. 8 Grown people and children alike are 1 inclined to fall into a very had habit of sliding down into a chair and sitting for hours with the spine bent almost in a half circle. That this is injurious thousands of people who in- I dulge in it never so much as dieam, I but that it is the cause of many serious ills those who have investigated the subject are well aware. The continual strain upon one side of the spinal column, with the corre- r sponding compressions on the other, give rise to nervous difficulties and affections of the brain. Dizziness, nau- r sea and blind spells are not infrequently the result of this practice. ? While the strictly upright position is i undoubtedly the most healthful, it 'J seems ramer naru worK 10 persuuue v the young and indolent to maintain it. Lazy people and those who love luxury have a habit of "slumping," so to speak, into their chairs and remaining in a semirecumbent position, with the spine as nearly telescoped as may be. That portion of the human J ahtomy generally known as the backbone was intended to be worn iu an J upright position, and the coustant pressure of the sections of the ver- s tebrae upon each other is productive a of various ills. " What They Knew About W?*hlngton. j1 An Everett school teacher, whose ? charges range in age from 5 to 7 years, A determined to celebrate the anniversary of the natal day of the father of . his country by asking a few questions. This was the interrogatory which she ^ propounded : "What can you tell me about George Washington?" And these are a few of the individuals , answers: "He was the savior of us all." "He was the owner of all the soldiers." "He was the man who can shoot straight. J "He discovered this country." "He was.the first man in the world." He was the man who never bragged." "He is the only man in the world who never told a lie." "If the train is delayed at night, the rear brakeman sometimes leaves another bit of fireworks behind him when called in. It is a 'fusee,' which is a paper cone containing enough red fire, inextinguishable by wind or rain, to burn exactly five minutes, which is the shortest length of time allowed between two running trains. The engineman of a following train . must stop when he comes to a fnsee, and not move ahead until it hiu: burned out, though he can calculate from its condition just about how far ahead the nest train 19.?ivirs ^uunroe, in 01.
