Medicine for Farm Atiiuinln. A writer in the American Agriculturist reccomends wood ashes as a valuable medicine for farm animals. After a long experience of twenty years in raisiug swii e he finds that his herds are most effectually protected from hog cholera by keeping wood ashes, rich in charcoal, mixed with salt, constantly before them in a covered box, with holes near the bottom. The hogs work the mixture out through these holes as fast as they wont it The idea of the writer is apparently good. The phosphates which enter into the composition of wood ashes are doubtless excellent germicides. Animals inoculated with the baccilli of Asiatic cholera by means of infected food suryive tbejexperiment because the germs are killed or rendered inoperative by the gastric juice. And it is well known that the power of both men and animals to resist almost any kind of infection is increased by strengthening the acids of the stomach. The writer referred to has found that the best condition powder is a mixture of three parts of wood ashes to one of salt.?New York Herald. True Business Principles.?It is as easv to be a rich man as a poor one. half the energy displayed in" keeping ahead that is required to catch up when behind, would save credit, give more time to attend to business, and add to the profit and reputation of those who work for gain. Honor your engagements. If you promise to meet a man to do a certain thing at a certain moment, be ready at the appointed time. If you go on business, attend promptly to matters on hand, and then as promptly go about your own business. Do not stop to tell stories in business hours. If you have a place of business be found there when wanted. No man can get rich by sitting around stores. Never fool on business matters. Have order, system, regularity, liberality, promptness. Only within recent years has the low price of borax brought it within the means of every one as a household assistant, and it would not be surprise iug if there were still many who would be found but partially aware of the way in which it can be made helpful. Until within the last quarter century it was principally the product of Eastern countries and Italy, and was imported to this country and sold at a high price. The article known as borax, which chemically speaking is the biborate of soda, was found ?n the development of California and Nevada to exist in such quantities that a long farewell might be given to the imported article if only these deposits could be made available; aud it was not long before American capital bad extensive reducing works in operation, with such capacity as not only to supply the home demand, but to allow of the export of large quantities. It now sells at less than a quarter of the price prevalent thirty years ago, and is there!l?kl/\ IsvM ntr/inir lion f rv tvhinli it I luic avauauic iui cinj use iu nuiuu >v is adapted. And it can be used a great deal more generally and helpfully than is appreciated. It may not be amiss to state some of the methods * of use as given by those who have made the matter a subject*for thought and careful experiment. For all washing purposes borax softens the water, loosens dirt, saves soap and labor, reduces the wear on clothes, and is foothiUR to the skin, making the hands soft and white, and will not injure the finest fabrics. Borax is also the best preservative known for fish, flesh, or fowl. ii Oatmeal.?If people, who have found that oatmeal does not agree with them when eaten with) cream and sugar, will try the following plan I think they will have no more trouble: In the first place, be sure to have the oatmeal thoroughly cooked. I use the Quaker rolled oats, put up in two pound packages. Use one cup of oatmeal to three cups of water, and let it cook slowly about an hour. Omit the sugar, and use only cream, always eating a cracker or piece of dry toast with it. One cause of oatmeal disagreeing with people is that they eat it too fast. If toast or cracker is eaten with it this is prevented. A feather duster attatched to a long pole is good for dusting cornices and centerpieces that are otherwise beyond reach. Turpentine instead of water in stove blacking will make an old rusty stove look like new. Apply in the usual manner. Equal parts of ammonia and spirits of turpentine will take out paint spots from any kind of clothing, no matter how old and dry and hard it may be. Saturate the spot with the liquid two or thee times, till the paint is soft, theu wash in soap suds. It is stated upon good authority that last year 102 well-defined cases of lockjaw were reported to the Royal S. P. C. Many farmers have demonstrated to their own satisfaction that better results can be obtained from a moderate quantity of manure being covered and worked into the surface soil by a good disk harrow, than by spreading it upon the land and plowing it into the soil. In the former case it is left near the surface, and as it becomes soluble, the plant roots appropriate all the fertilizing elements.
