GREENWOOOD ITEMS. "Mac" Gives an One of His Old Style Good Letter*?Rend it. Yourself. Greenwood,S. C., April 24,1892. Mr. A. J. Sproles is away and not wishing to be forgotten by the readers of the Pressand Banner J will offer my services lor a few weeks and report in an bumble way the lew items of news that are obtainable. Mr. C. B. Alexander and Miss Carrie Clary were married at the home or Mr, F. C. Greene on Byrd Htreet on last Thursday morning. ~ ? ,,r m M..#*KaiPo norfnrmpd the cer* lot? XVtJV. vy . 1. iunuucno fv..v. ? emony which united this popular young couple for weal or for woe. Mrs. Alexander is the daughter of Mrs. Clary and the sister of Mrs. F. C. Greene of this place. The groom Is the assistant cashier of the City Bang and <8 a rising young man In tbe business community. The happy couple are off for a short stay with relatives in North Carolina. Mrs. W. L. Durst died at her dome here on last Thursday evening. Sne has been a great sufferer having been confined to her bed for many months. She was an earnest, zealous christian and died "not as those who have no hope." The funeral services and interment took place at the Greenwood cemety on Friday afternoon, Bro. E. J. Forrester olliciaiiug. The sympathy ol manv iriends is extended to the bereaved husband in his loneliness and sorrow. Mr. J. W. Sproles has a huge contract on hand consisting of roofing una other tin-work at Enoree and PacoleL Mr. A. J. Sproles is superintending tbe work. Tbe mill-owners of the Piedmont country all know where to apply when they waut low but honest bids on tin-work. Since tbe opening of spring the erection of dwellings and other buildings which never cease here has greatly Increased and many handsome bnllulDgs will be completed before the olose of summer. Arrangements are being completed by i?htr>ri thfi ra.Dacltv of the Greenwood Cotton Mill will be doubled iu a short time. This will necessitate tbe building of a number oi bouses for operative?, arrangements lor wblcb are also being made. Tbe stocfc of this corporation is now considered very desirable property. Mr. F. fi. Cobb is now building a large twostory dwelling on College street. l?ulte a uumber of low, in that part of the town bave changed hands recently and tbe probability is that several dwellings be built before the expiration of ibe year. Work has been resumed on the new Methodist church and I learu that It will now be pushed to oompletlou Kev. Dr. Kavoekln, a native of Armenia, will preach In the Baptist church ou next Bunday morning. He was converted at a mission station at his Turtco-Kussian home and in a short while afterward came to America to prepare himself to do missionary work. He has now completed his studies in literary, medical and tneologlcal institutions and will soon return to take up his life-work among his owu people. Protracted services are now in progress at the Methodist church. Tbe pastor is belug assisted by Kev. Mr. Daniels, of Newberry. Tbe congregations are large and some good will probably oe done. Mr. A. A. Gage is finishing a handsome MmHonM in th? inwpr DarL oi towu. Audy will soon be as happy as a king with bis charming wife ana nitle one la ibelr pretty nest. For sometime trouble bag been brewing in tbe council chamber which Anally culmluated in the resignation of Iutendeui J. T. tftmuiona and wardeus, C. L.. Braudrot aud A. Kosenburg a few days ago. Uu Saturday night a meeting of the Democratic citizen* of the town was held to nominate a ticket to fill the vacancies thus caused. T. F. KUey was nominated for Intendantand J. K. L>um and Joel 8. Bailey were nominated for Wardens. These gentleman will be duly elected today, Sluce there Is no man so devoid ol sense tbat be caunot give advice, let us make two suggestions to these new officials. See to it tbat every citizen pays bis taxes or works the required time on the streets, no matter bow worthless he is. We see no reason why a lazy, thieving, gambling loafer should uot be required to pay his taxes Just the same as the patriotic man wbo pays without complaining although he may have to labor diteen hours per day to "make both ends meet." Xbe other suggestion is; "Let them beJight," particularly on tbe streets near the business nouses. The merchants are the heaviest tax- | payers and nobody should complain of a little expenditure 01 money for their benebtand protection. _ Mr. Win. y. AnuerBon is in very poor health, confined to bib room a great part oi the time. Mra. W. P. Dean left for Eufala, Ala., one day last week. She will be away lor several weeks. Gov. Tillman tells us that the reason why he does not want Hon.M. L. Donaldson given a Federal office Is because Donaldson supported Cleveland in tbe National Convention. Tbls Is equivalent to saying to President Cleveland: You muBt not give this man anything because he Is your true and tried friend. Tbla 1b "gall" Indeed. Tbla onoe proud old State is the laughingstock of the country aud tbe butt of a thousand Jokes. We would suggest to Governor Tillman tbat in remodelling the coat of arms , of tbe State to place somewhere, a badge ol 1 mourning and tbe word "lebabod." Tbe most level-headed men of this town are the doctors. Tbey have an organization the prime object of which is to enable them to 1 collect their bills. When a man is able, but t will not pay one of them, tire other members ( are notified of tbe fact and not one of tbem will respond to a call irom the delinquent 9 until be satisfies the creditor. This is as it { ought to be and tbe idea being such H good t out) It Is probable that it win be auopiea by men In otber lines of business. 1 A paper published In Darlen, Ga., says thai s the prospect Is good and tbat large crops will < be gathered In that section thlB year, provided tbe politicians and Alliance lecturers can 8 be kept out of the fields. p What shall we do? Senator Hoar says the . people can't be trusted to elect tbe rlgbt men to the Senate, and we know that tbe legislature has made one miserable choice and therefore cannot be trusted to do the work, so what are we to do ? The Cotton Compress at this place will be > sold at Abbeville next Monday. We have beard some rumors as to purchasers. This is a tine piece of property which can be made to u pay. . since the organization ot the Board of D Trade, a few weeks ago, many matters oi in- o terest have been considered and Dew energy a is being infused which bodes much good lot tbe business men and people of tbe town at D large. Tbe motto of every loyal aqd public n spirited citizen should be anima et Jlde, for a nothing else can take tbe place of coutldence <6** In yourself and your surroundings. L A large plate glass window lu tbe frout of Bailey, Barksdale <fc Co.'s store was broken by a runaway horse one day last week. Mr. M. C. Gaines is confined to his room with a severe oold. ?-? it a?x r Ti r? i ne scueuuie 01 uio rntui uviuhui iuo xt. rv. A W. C. road having been changed, the earliest mall to arrive is that from Atlanta which comes in at a few minutes before tbree in the afternoon. This is very inconvenient and formal complaint will probably be made. The best conundrum that we have seen lately appeared In the Atlanta Journal a few days ago. Here It 1b. Why is a kiss like the i creation ? Because it's made of nothing, and I God knowB its good. Mac. ^ I The State of South Carolina, ^ COUNTY OP ABBEVILLE. B , PROBATE COUKT.
