The winds aro keen, the storm is very cold ; But if thou hold me, I ean still endure Till night is past andm orning breaketh sure. O keep me close to thee, uiy God; Aye, ciut>e 10 wee : Library Etiquette.* It i8 bad form for' a guest to take boobs from the bookcases without permission. In many instances they remain in the guest chamber, to be replaced by some member of the family who requires them for immediate use. Magazines, periodicals, papers are for the library table, and should be left there. Order and consideration for the desires of all are among the canons of ? '"i-- i?? good SOCieiy. lue uesc scat iuc cheerful blaze should be for the invalid or elderly person. Age and sickness demand a courtesy that should be on all occasions extended to them. It is their prerogative. "Don't fail iu proper attention to elderly people Don't stand before the fire to the exclusion of the warmth from others. Don't fail iu irood manners in anything." There are three articles that should be chained to the library table?the paper cutter, scissors and pencils for family use. It is the displacing fif these little instruments of usefulness that disturb the disposition, irritate the temper, and are among the causes of the hasty word and the uukind thought. "The borrowed book." What a text for a sermon, said a clever author. If books are borrowed, mar them not; neither turn down the leaves, and above all, be careful to return them in as good a state of preservation as when borrowed. To write on the margins is uupardonable, vulgar, illhrprf And ho the librarv has its et iquette, social laws add good form. Id this inviting place tbe inmates enjoy the calm repose, the new books, the firelight's sparkle. Here they pen the loving words, and in this sanctum our intellectual life grows, spreads and digests. It is the room of sweet disorder, where dead authors lie and give us all their gems of thought aud intellectual life.?Good Housekeeping. Iced Ten. There ia a certain good woman, the wife of a prominent lawyer of Texas, who had never lived out of the country In which she was born. Her husband attended tbe courts at the diflerent towns of the State, and his wife listened to his experiences with wonder and surprise. The Saturday Gazette gives this story: He never grew tired of extolling the - -t virtues or * n uig giass ui ittu ?u when a man is warm and tired and when a new railroad line waslaid out to his native town his firstcommission was for a quanity of ice. The wife was neither surprised nor displeased to have a well filled ice chest, and on the morning after the arrival of the ice the lawyer requested her to have iced tea for supper. It was an extremely warm day, and when he took his sent at the table he was hot, tired and thirsty. What was his surprise to see, instead of the refreshing, amber beverage of his soul's desire, the same old steaming Brown Betty teapot aud the cups and saucers of former days. "Where is the iced tea, Mary?" he asked. ''There 'tis," she answered, laying her forefinger on the hissing lid of Brown Betty; "and if you can tell any difference betwixt it and plain water tea, vou're smarter than I be." She had boiled the ice.?Youth's Companion. Honseliold IIin I*. Dry the tin dishes before puttiug away. Never wash raisins that are to be used in sweet disbes. It will make the pudding or cake heavy. To make brooms last longer than they ordinarily do, dip them once a week in boiling suds. This toughens the strands. Test your bluing by adding some washing soda to it in solution ot water. If it turns reddish it is Prussian blue, and to be avoided because it is composed of iron, which becomes decomposed by the use of soap and soda, aud makes iron rust spots. Articles of food that are damp or juicy snouia never oe ieu iu papers. Paper Is merely a compound of rags, glue, lime and similar substances, with acids and chemicals intermixed, and when damp is unlit to touch things that are to be eaten. Peanut Candy .?Two cups of white sugar, one-half cup of water; let it boil, then add one half teaspoonful of cream tartar dissolved in a little cold water. Cook until when dropped in cold water it is brtttle, then add {butter the size of ao English walnut, and cook a few minutes longer. Pour over the shelled nuts, already spread in buttered tins, and set away to cool. Green Tomato Pickle? One peck of tomatoes, one cup of brown sugar, two tablespoonfuls of horseradish, four onions, six peppers, one tablespoon each of cloves, allspice and cinnamon.) Split each tomato and slice peppers and onions. Lay them in a stone jar. Sprinkle in a teacup of salt. Pour oft' the water and cook with vinegar enough to cover, adding the sugar and 9pices. Do not cook uutil the tomatoes are soft. They should, however be thoroughly scalded. Pack in jars aud pour on Ainegar to cover. For cleaning tinware there is nothing better than dry flour, applied with a newspaper. After beiug thoroughly washed in very hot soapsuds and wiped dry, tin vessels should be set on the top of the stove for a few moments and then vigorously scoured for a few moments, with ihe dry flour rubbed on with a wad of newspaper crumpled and softened. Iu this way tinware may be kept free from rust and almost as bright and glistening as silver, care being taken that it is never put away damp and that it is kept in a dry place. DENTAL NOTICE.
