THE RIVER THAT ROARS AND THE WRITER THAT WRITES. Xotos From the Seven Milled City of Kocky** Flowing Stream. Lowndesville, s. Juno 18th, is:i2. Mr. J. 15, Franks went to Klberton Saturday by the G. O. it N.. for a few days visit. Miss Annie Lou Power and Miss Lillie Huckabee went to Anderson on the 110011 tr?in, to visit relatives. Mr. Jus. Ilall and Miss Fannie Hall of Andersou, cauie down Saturday on a visit to the l'amiiy of their brother-in-law, Mr. J. \V. Harden. On Sunday there was an interchange of pulpits between the Uev. H. Fennel and] Kev. J. s. Porter, the latter occupying the pulpit In the Piesbyterian church, at 8.:K) p. in. and the former in the Methodist church at S p. tu. Immediately after the close of the services in the Presbyterian church, in the afternoon au auxiliary Bible Society was formed. Itev. J. S. Porter,*President: Mr. J. P.. LeKoy VicePresident; Mr. J. B. Franks Secretary: Mr. i t i jiiiiner l.ibrarian : Messrs. T. J. Bask in. A. J. .Spear and L. C. Mauldin Executive c *oiii- ; iniitec. There were about thirty names enrolled as members. Mr. J. J. Johnson who is convalescing from his recent illness, and Miss Nannie Johnson of Anderson came down Tuesday to spend a few days with friends in town. Messrs. P. K. McCully, Jas. Sullivan and Moss of Anderson passed through this place Tuesday en route to Calhoun Kalis, where they went to look after their interests In that thriving town and to agree upon a siie, and make arrangements for building a fine hotel. They returned to this place Wednesday and spent the night at the Mosley House. Calhoun Kails City doubtless is the only city in the world having the distinction of having said of it that the whole of it's population including the Mayor, excepting the Depot Agent, weut to Abbeville, (or any where else)tospend the night. Whilst it is not ainone the probabilities that she will over become a seaport town, yet her possibilities are great. With a tlrst class hotel a number of business houses with their usual adjuncts, and with an increase In population of Sl'JOS. she would then have a population of 10,000 and be h great business center. t|uitea number ol the patrons and friends of Prof. II. i;. Humbert's school attended the closing exercis?-!> Wednesday evening. They were well pleased, and hope that the InduccmenlsAoUered will bring him back to us for another year at least. Mr. Richard Speer went to Auderson Tuesday to attend the commencement in the Patrick Military Institute. Mrs. Wna. The spring and summer so far have been almost unexceptionable for working a crop and tlie planters generally are well up with their work, having finished harvesting, and their crops are in flne fix, they only need rain occasionally to niaKe the crops all that could be desired. One of the most hopeful signs of better times, for the planters, seen by this writer tor a loug time is that they are only spending a dollar when Imperatively heeessa>y to do so. They are not putting on any airs, in buying extras, etc. Kconomi/.e seems to be the watchword of all. Those who raise their own supplies and live at.home, know nothing of the hard times, and all should learn the lesson so plainly taught and in the future act accordingly. ' To-day was held our picnic, which was quite a success. At an early hour the people oegan to assemble at the grounds, which had been prepared for the occasion, with comfortable ?eats and a well arranged stand, which ihe hands of our fair ones had suitably decorated. The e\erclses were begun by prayer by the Rev. Mr. Winn of the Abbeville circuit. Then l'rof. H. B. Humbert the chairman introduced Mr. J. B. Franks, who well entertained the crowd for a short time, then the ltev. J. s. Porter in a short speech gave, ad ditlonal enloymeut to thecrowu. -lyuout niai time Mr. W. L. Miller of the Abbeville liar arrived and being presented gave to his hearers quite an appropriate and Interesting address. Prof. Humbert, next occupied a short time In returning thanks to the community at large lor the many klndesses shown him &c. Next some prizes which he had offered sometime ago to his pupils. Muster C. M. Horton was awarded the medal for the best average. The following each received a prize for good conduct aud progre.-s made In their studies: Edwin Moorheud, Miss Katie Porter, flampton Bonds, ltoscoe Horton, Bruce Mosley and Koscore Loltis. These were given lor their proficiency 111 reading. That time, the exercises closer for dinner, but as there was a dark cloud rising the people lett for home, which cut short the social leatureof the occasion. A single remark made in a moment of irritation may be followed by a lifetime of pain and regret. A Georgia paper says that a man in that State returned home from business one evening in an irritable mood, when his wife, who was ignorant of his state of mind, began to narrate some trivial an noyance. Hie thoughtless husband hastily bade her be silent, adding that the voice was hateful to him. Cut to the heart by this ill-ad vises 1 speech, the usually patient wife made a deep resolve, and answered him. "You will never hear my voice again." She kept her vow. Going about her work, attending to household duties, using a slate when words were absolutely necessary, she maintained unbroken silence for thirty years. She ministered to the wants of hef husband when he died, but would not speak. She died recently without uttering a word. An extreme case, to be sure, but who can foretell the effects of a thoughtless word ? "Beswift to hear, slow tospoak, slow to wi'fUh." The lesson contained in these words is worth more than much tine gold. ?Christ not only jiurges, but seconds and enforces our prayers, lie pmitimiuMv imnv thp r?rv nf hi? lilonil to the cry of our prayers. We limy safely depend upon it that ve shall prevail. RICHMOND & DANVILLE RAILROAD COLUMBIA ANI> GREENVILLE DIVISION. Condensed schedule in effect .May 15, 1VJ2. BETWEEN COLUMBIA.
