Loving Word*. Loving words wil! cost but little. Journeying up tlie hill ot life ; But they make the weak ami weary Stronger, braver for the strife. At the close of the war of the Rebellion Buruam Wardell was made warden of the state prison of Virginia. On entering upon his duties he discovered himself in charge of a desperate set of men. They had been treated with great severity. The whipping post which stood conspicuous in the jail yard a gritu blood besmeared specter, bud been daily used in vain to restrain and intimidate prisoners. . Burnam Wardell looked with horror upon these things. "I will have none of them," he said. "Such barbarity can do nothing but create barbariaus. I will establish a new order. How should any man grow better under such discipline? It is at war with nature. These men however weak andsinful are still men, with hearts fashioned after the man ner 01 my own: ine same lnnueiices* that inspire nobleness in me will develop the same in thein. I will put myself in right relations to these men, my heart shall call to them aud their's shall answer. My faith in the Creator inspires confidence in the creature." Accordingly he ordered the armed police as usual to assemble the prisoners in the chapel. All eyes were fixed on the commanding face and form of the new keeper. And he addressed them in such words of sympathy as they had never heard before. He spoke to them as men and brothers who had fallen in weaknessand sin, that should yet rise in the strenght of the nobler element of their nature, and be honored among men. That to this end he would be to them a friend and helper. That he would defend them from me luuumuu ircuuneiu iu wuieu uiey had been subject. At the conclusion the prisoners were dispersed, but tears glistened on many a cheek wearing the brand of sensuality and sin. Burnum, said Mrs. Wardell, "I don't think Wallie should be allowed to run through the shops and listen to the conversation of these men." "I wfll speak of it in the chapel," said he. When they were assembled he spoke of his wife's fears 'What shall I say to her?' 'Give the child his libity,' said one who seemed to speak for many. Will you all promise to utter no bad language in his hearing?' All hands were instantly raised. Then turning to the child who stood at his side he said, 'Wallie these men will not hurt you. He then ordered a detachment to dig up the whipping post and bring it into the chapel. It was placed on the speaker's stand. The lash and the other belongings were hung on it and the whole labeled for sale, price lol) Bibles and 200 primers. Thejoffer was accepted by a Boston publisher. The hated relic was placed in a long box like a coffin and borne away by the men like a funeral. A court was established which convened daily when offences ocoured, which were surprizingly rare. The offender was tried before a jury of prist> ht 1 nutria, J>. H. UUUII^ usjuu^, UUU \> UIlie was appointed sergeant of arms. On one occasion Big Jim tbe roughest man in the building was convicted of some offence. He demurred, insisting on his innocence, and for a moment seemed almost ready to resist authority. "Jimmy, said the warden I believe'you to be guilty arid you must go to the cell. Take him along Wallie." The little fellow seized him by his pataloons, the convict hesitated only a moment. H. T. 11. A Child Saved by a AN INTELLIGENT ANIMAL I'l'LLS A LAI) FROM A TttACK IN FACE OF AN ENGINE. Harry Gorden, three years old, was saved from death on Tuesday by a Newfoundland dog. The little fellow, aeeomnanied bv the doir. was walkinc along the tracks of the Boston, Revere Bead) ?fe Lynn Railroad when a train bore down upon them. The boy's mother was running to save him, but she was too far away to do anything. Just before the train reached the little fellow the dog became aware of the danger. With almost human intelligence he seized the boy's clothing in his jaws and dragged him from the track just in time to escape the wheels. His prompt action saved the boy's life.
