To-morrow is Thanksgiving day, and Rev. R. E. Stackbouse. of Greenwood, will hold appropriate services In the Methodist Church in the evening. The public are cordially invited to attend. Rev. M. Dargan will leave next Monday for Darlington to attend the annual meeting of the South Carolina Conference of the M. Ii Church. Next Sunday is to be'observed with appropriate services In the Methodist Church as "Children's Day." All the schools of the town are cordially invited to meet with us. The last Church Conference for 1891 was held In the Methodist Church at the conclu?lon of the morning services. The roll or members being called, it was found necessary to have it revised, and upon motion of J. C. Klugh it was turned over to the board 01 Stewards with instructions to look after all members who had moved away, and make such changes as they should deem proper. The pastor then submitted a written report covering his work for the past year, and showing the spiritual condition of the membership; all of which was very gratifying. 49 members have been added to the church, besides a general increase in lining anu goon works, brought about by tho fulthful and zealous work of the pastor. Superlntendant J. F. Lyon submitted no written report, bui. represented the school In a prosperous and healthy condition. C. V. Hammond chairman of the board oI Stewards, made a financial report, and requested that all the assessments for this station would be fully met. Abbeville station stands high In the South Carolina Conference, aud always comes off with a clear sheet and a bright record financially. This is indeed very gratifying as well as complimentary. Let us profit by the past, and strive to do better in the fmure. Mr. Thomas C. Perrlu is Jn Columbia in attendance upon the U. S. Court, as Juror. Mr. J. 8. Fisher is now on the police force 01 Abbeville, in place of Mr. J. S. Hammond resigned. We know Mr. Fisher personally, and feel sure be will discharge his duties without fear or favor to any one. With Messrs Kilt y and Fisher to look after "the boys" Abbeville Is safe. MlsBOrene Hughes, after a pleasant visit to friends in Columbia and Newberry, relumed home last Monday. Miss Mamie Murray was unexpectedly called home last week by telegram announcing the Illness of her mother, whom we are glad to report better at tnis wnuug. Miss Crlss Hughes after spending a delightftil visit among friends and relatives In Abbeville, returned to ber bome in Anderson last week, somewhat, unexpected and a little troubled in mind. We trust she is now happy, and that the "gallant Knight" is fully restored. Why can't our merchants have a telephone communication from one or both depots. It would certainly be a great convenience, and would soon pay for Itself. . The musical entertainment at the New Hotel, last Batuiday evening given by Prol.Gill Thomas was a very enjoyable occasion. The Professor rendered some excellent music, and showed himself to be quite a "musical expert" playing six different Instruments at one time. At the conclusion of the "mutlcale" be offered a beautiful silver cup to the young lady present who should receive the highest number or votes as the "most popular young lady In Abbeville." Mtss Rebecoi Seal was honored with the highest vote, which entitled ber to the cup, as well as the blgb compliment. Miss Mary Hemphill, the accomplished and fascinating daughter of General R. R. Hemphill, was honored by receiving the next highest vote. .Ttmt think of It! there are more than 1001 young ladies above the age of "sweet 16" living within the corporate limits of Abbeville? woald you believe it? yes tls true. There are equally as many young men over this age. we are comtorted by the thought that next year will be "leap year." Look out boys. Mr. Willie E. 11111 is an artist Indeed. A few days ago we paw a large cake most beau tifully and artistically trimmed by him, wblob would have done credit to any expert. Mrs. Dargan and daughter left yesterday for Chester where she will have the pleasure of joining a re-union of her family. Abbeville will soon have a tine 'Silver cornet band" made up of our young men of rn uslcal talent. There is nothing that will add 1' more to the enjoyment of any community than a baud of floe music, and nothing that will more effectually drive away dull care. This is a worthy and public spirited enterprise on the part of Abbeville's young men (members of the band only} who huve as yet j asked for no outside uid. we think our citteens should appreciate this fact and stand ready to assist them should they desire it in the future. Mr. C. E. Bruce with his entire force may now be found in the store of C. P. Hammond A Co., who are prepared to iuniisb any and E&- all kinds of shoes you need. M. Due West Local*. Due West, S. C., nov. 80, 3S01. Dr. C. B. Cowan returned home from his Florida trip on Friday. He reports an excellent time fishing and huuting, and bis face aud bands are a very fashionable color?tan. The tropical sun did it. Mr. Ibzan Bell, who has been working ove.ln Laurens County. Is at home again. Miss Minnie Devlin is visiting friends In Louisville, Ga. Miss Ola Devlin is In Augusta being treated by an oculist. Sbe will remain mere about u month. Thanksgiving day was appropriately observed hereon last Thursday. Some went to preaching to render thanks to the Giver oi every good and perfect gift; aud some went hunting. Both the Colleges and the Seminary observed the day, Dy a suspension of the regular exercises for that day. The day was a disagreeable one, being cold, and a drizzling rain falling part of the time. A collection for the benefit of the Tbomwell Orphanage, of Clinton, S. C., was taken up In the A. R. P. Church on that day. It has been the custom of this congregation for anumber of years, on each Thanksgiving day to takeup a collection for the benefit ol this Orphanage. fbe young ladles of the Y. L. C. E. Society bad a candy pulling at the Kennedy House on Wednesday night. The admission lee was ten cents. The proceeds were eiven to the College Building Fund. Messrs. McCllntock and Bryson, two students of Erskine College, attended the marriage of Mr. John McCllntock and Miss Bryson, of Laurens, last week. They returned Saturday. Mr. J. M. McCllntock of Lauren* is visiting friends and relatives in town. He arrived Saturday. Rev. J. H. Pressly went to Woodruff, S. C., on Saturday to preach. We bad a little snow on Sabbath evening and night. Departed this life at Stony Point, Abbeville County. 8. C., on tbe morning of the 10th of ?' November, at about 7 o'clock, Mrs. M. L. Caldwell, wife of.J. C. Caldwell and daughter of C. C. Law. The deceased leaves a devoted husband, two children aud a large circle oi relatives and friends to deeply mourn their loss. She was a member ot the Presbyterian Church and died a peaceful and happy death. The Rev. Thomas F. Gadsden, the Episcopal Rector at Anderson, S. C., died suddenly yesterday. Elected a Director? Resolution** of Rcspect iu Honor of Dr. Young. At a meeting of the Directors of the National Bank yesterdny Mr. J. C. Klugh was electwin Director to fill the place of the late J. N. Young, of Due West. i We congratulate the bank upon the election \ of Mr. Klugb. He Is one of our progrev-be young men, of good Judgment and fine business qualifications. He Is a safe man and the Directors acted wisely in electing him. The following resolutions were also passed . upon the death of Dr. Young : f It Is always right to remember, revere, and | endeavor to keep fragrant and tresh the memories of departed worth. We owe this much to the dead, to ourselves and to the rising generation. In keeping with this principle it is most fitting that we, the Directors of the 5 National Bank of Abbeville, should turn * aside from the routine of formal business to drop a tear to the memory of the just. God in his Inscrutable providence has seen fit to remove from our midst the Rev. J. N. ? Young, L. L. D.. a Director of this Bauk from *the time of Its organization to the day of his death. lie was the senior member of the Board ot Directors and in the natural order of things his death was not calculated to produce any very great surprise, yet thisdoes not -? lessen our lo.-.s or render our grief any the less J poignant. 1 Dr. Young was a man full of years, of honors and usefulness. His worth was of a sterling, stalwart sort, ind utterly void of "glare and pretension." His character wus high, his integrity far be yond reproach. ? He was a gentlemen, a scholar, a Christian. Our intercourse with him was delightful and always profitable. He was not a man of many words but when he spoke he never failed to command respect by his sound wisdom and rare good Judgment. Resolved 1. That in the death of Dr. J. N. Young the National Bank of Abbeville has lost a faithful friend and firm supporter, and t the Board of Directors a highly esteemed co- r adjutor and counsellor. 2. That a sense of our great loss Is p.ll the more keenly felt when we remember his fine financial ability, wonderful patience, and mature Judgment, qualities so indispensable to . constitute an efficient Bank Director. I 3. That this paper be entered upon the I minutes of the Board and a blank page in- * scribed to his memory. 4. That a cony of this minute be sent to the ramlly oi the deceased. L Contributed Personal*. / There was a good crowd in town yesterday, / and a very quiet one. Trade is not as good as might be, owing, no doubt, to low prices of cotton. A negro and a hog furnished considerable amusement on the square Tuesday morning. Several of our youuj; men expect lo spend Thanksgiving near Troy. It looks rather suspicious, its a good excuse, however. Mrs. S, M. Calhoun is qultesick at her resl- t dence uear towu. Sho with her daughter J Mrs. A. C. Rucker have Just returned from Athens, Ga. Lt.-Gov. Gary, Senator Hemphill, Representatives Robertson aud Gary left for Columbia on jinuuay. j> NVe now have a brand new policeman, Mr. Fisher, formerly of Greenwood, now is guardian of our town during "the silent watches 0 i?f the night." Mr. Fisher takes the place of Mr. J. S. Hammond, who has resigned, that -r be may engage in other business. Mr. Fisher ? is an active and watchful officer, and will fill the place as it has been filled by Mr. Hammond?well. V The Merry-go-round was well patronized Saturday, and we notice that Conductor Keller now wears h blue cap with this legend In dl Sold letters "Conductor." Didn't it rain Sunday? No service at any U of our churches at night. 1' W. P. Calhoun, Esq., and wife returned from a short visit to relatives in Edgefield last week. or The photo tent of Mr. Suipes was blown te down Sunday night, and looked a complete wreck. Mr. Snipes we learned lost several dollars by the breaking of his camera. <Stc. Candidates were plentiful last week. We have not learned the result of the election so I far. 2 Miss Orene Hughes got home Monday from 11 quite an extended visit to Columbia. Our stores have already beisiin to nut on their Christmas dress, and loolt"qulte uttraclive. There art* all classes of goods on display, from tbe cheapest to the very expensive, and some of the Christmas novelties are Indeed beautiful. Have you heard the wonderful talking machine at Speeds' ? If not, you ought to. It should rank as one of the seven wonders of / tbe world. * Mrs. W.C. McGowan left last Monday for Charleston where she will speud a few days. Mr. Sparkman, of Greenwood, spent Sunday with friends in Abbeville. There were more "drunks" in town last Saturday than there has been for sometime, and no doubt many a dollar spent that should have been used for the comforts of life. It is a shaine to take irom family aud putln drink, money that would, If spent properly, bring so many of the world's good things and happiness at home. It The musical entertainment at the New Hotel last Saturday night by Gil Thomas v was poorly attended, and he did uot get rich. 8 At tbe close of the show Miss Rebecca Seal was presented with a sllvercup, having been Jt voted by the audience tbe most popular young lady in town.
