I ^/iiaucouMi^ |iai\?v;iicu wj mv Governor October 21. The pardon j was recommeuded by tli- ? board of ( directors and officers of the pfiiiten- , tiary. ?^ It comes from Nashville that miners liberated an equal number of convicts from their stockade and furnished a large number with citizens clothing to faciliate their escape. This is a continuance of the agitaion last summer when the miners made efforts to get the convitcs away from the mines. An earthquake in Japan, October 21, destroyed the towns of Nagoya, Ciifu and Osaki. Probably three thousand persons lost their lives. Many vessels were wrc-ked. Few portions of the Niphou i-l.mds escaped the earthquake. Weittlier W isilnm. I.aning, in his "Weather WiiJdom," says: A deep blue colored sky, even when seen through the clouds, indicate fair weather; growing whiteness, an approaching storm. When the sky in rainy weather is tinged with sea green the rain wiy increase; if deep blue it will be showery. A pale yellow sky at evening indicates wet weather. A neutral gray sky at evening indicates fair weather. Thesamein the niorninig indicates wet weather. Haziness in the air, which fades the sun's light and makes the orb appear whitish or ill-defined, or at night the moon and stars grow dim, indicates rain will follow. 40* ? Japanese Wooilon Shoes. In Japan children's shoes arc made of blocks of wood secured with cords. The stocking resembled a mitten, having a seperate place for the great toe. As these shoes are lifted only by the toes, the heels make a rattling sound as their owners walk, which is quite stunning in a crowd. They are not worn in the house, as they would injure the soft straw mats on the tloor. You leave your shoes at the door. Every house is built with reference to the number of mats required for the floors, each room having from eight to sixteen, and in taking lodgings you pay 1 so much for a mat. They think it | extravagant in us to require a whole, joom to o rselves. The Japanese sho- gives perfect free- j dooi to the foot. The beauty of the ! human foot is only seen in tiie .Japa- \ nese. They have no corns, no ingrow- [ s*.: ing nails, no distorted joints. Our toes are cramped until they are deformedand are in danger of extinc tion. They have the full use of their toes, and to them they are almost like y'i fingers. Nearly every mechanic make use of his toes in holding his work. Every'toe is fully develope. A schoolboy in Australia recently j put the matter tersely, thus: "I abstain from liquor because if I wish to excel as a cricketer, Grace says 'abstain;' j ar a walker, Weston says 'abstain;, | as an oarsman, Halon says 'abstain;'! as a swimmer, Webb says 'abstain;' j : as a missionary, Livingstone says' abstain;' as a doctor, Clark says 'alWain; \ as a preacher. Farrar says 'abstain."' [ Asylums, prisons, and work-houses repeat the cry, " Abstain." ?
