V V-. . The Press and Banner. BY HUGH WILSON. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1891. .Twelve .Pages. The NliUke* of a Sninll Boy. A bov would not be worth much if he never made mistakes and was never told of them. There is hope for a boy in proportion to the number of mistakes be makes and afterwards correct. One of the most common mistakes of a boy is in what he wants. He is apt to want most the things he hasn't, and one of the things a small boy hasn't and hankers afier most of all is size. O how he does pine for size! He waits and counts days and scratches the wall with pencil-marks, and stretches himself up trying to catch up with his big brother. And all the time he may be more of a man than l !_ L!? I 5X? 1 t ins uig urouier, u nuiy ne wuuiu put the righi kind of measure in place of I he foot-rule. You have heard of the Irishmau who went to the market to buy the most for his money, and finding that turnips were so much cheaper thau potatoes, bought four bushels of turnips instead of two of potatoes. But he was much surprised to learn that the turnips were seventy-five per cent, water, and that he might have bought a package he could have carried in his vest-pocket that would have contained toe same amouut of nutriment as his four bushels of turnips. That was a case where size was deceiving, and that is the way the small boy is often taken in. It's not the size of a man's tirse, or the breadth of his shoulder, or the height of his stove pipe hat that counts. 1 have seen a seven-foot bully do a thing so mean aud unmanly that a seven-year old boy ought.to blush for it. And I have seen a boy pass along after him and pick the whining dog up that he had lamed by a kick, aud treat it with sucb pity and tenderness that, if we still Jived in the days of chivalry and we do in more wavs than one. that bov would have been knighted and spurred and received the applause and smile of fair ladies and noble men and bis kibg, and the hulking giaut would have been given to some magician to be changed into a flea er, a potato-bug or some petty, noxious insect. If a boy would only hauker aftertbe thing that ought to go with size, and let size take care of itself, he would make no mistake. Another thing the small boy is apt to overrate is physical strength. He is always bragging about what he can do and the strongest boy in a crowd is sure to have things pretty much his own way, The whole world used to be boys once in that respect. The man who could strike the hardest blow and slide the fastest and jump the farthest and use his arms and legs the best was the best man, now it is the man who can use his head the best. It is tbe man who has the best heart. Tbe Indian said when he first heard a 'pistol lired and saw the deadly effects, "He heap little, heap loud, heap go quick and hit hard," A boy who is little need not be loud, but if he can "go quick" and hit the mark clean through in doin? hisdutv. be is maniler than some who wear men's clothing. It is not the exhibition of strenth, it is the just and kind use of strenth, the inteligent and judicious use of strength, that makes great. The horse has more strej gth than the man, but the man with his less strength and his superior mind makes the horse go as he pleases, and subdues the wildest and most ferocious beast. Don't ache for sire; don't ache for strength. Don't iie awake nights thinking how to get either. Let those things take care of themselvtx and be just the kindest, most truthful, patient industrious, merriest, happiest boy you can, and get all the love you can from others and give all the you can to them and men will one day say ot yoa, "What a power he is;" and may be yon couldn't lifta five-pound dumbbell. But all I say will be true nevertheless. ^ The Prudent and Proper KJiie or Language. Genuine wit in a man is almost always genial. To be a witty woman is a very dangerous thing. Women are harder in their judgments of their own sex than men are of theirs. Slang is not the outgrouth of fine natures ; it is not accordant with refined taste. The praise of women, poured into the ears of othe women, is not usually gratefully received. . Because a man has a thing to sell ?because he stands behind a counter or drives a cart, he is not necessarily no gentleman. Women presume upon the fact that they are women, in taking license to say what they choose of each other, and of man iu particular. I* J VUII^ t? an who not only will neither say nor hear ill of any one. A young woman who treats every man with whom she trades as a gentleman, giving him her confidence, aud throwing herself upon his Innor and generosity, will stand the best possible chance to be fairly dealt by.? dood Housekeepiug?J. G. Holland. Sick Headache.?A recent medical writer thus accounts for sickheadache, from which so many persons suffer. He attributes It to a weak stomach and imperfect digestion, and says that the attacks are usually preceded by a greater than ordinary appetite. The stomach is naturally weak and so long as it is not crowded it works kindly. By and by more food is put into it?or more irritating kinds?than it can digest. It ferments, an acid is produced, the acid as an irritant upon coats of the stomach, and this irritant is taken for a call for food, to satisfy I which, more is taken, and all to no purpose; and the stomach revolts but with the rest during the headache, aud the relief from the vomiting, it recovers its wonted tone. If this be correct, the remedy is a very simple one ; abstinence from food for a meal or two, or a denial of the unnatural cravings of the appetite, would seem to be all that is required. Sufferers from this disease should test the value of this advice. Potato Salad.?Two well-beaten eggs, three tea-spoonfuls mixed mustard, two of salt, three table-spoonfuls each of sugar aud olive oil or butter, one dessert-spoonful of flour; mix well, pour into a tea-cupful of boiling vinegar, let cook until it thickens, stirring constantly, then pour it over two quarts of boiled potatoes sliced thin while hot, aud mixed with two chopped onions; salt to taste.?The Housewife.
