E-.rF? ' ' fr - .. ' " 1 Talk ii|> dial rnstor. ! 1 I ^ "I do not remember over to have % heard in my father's home one disrc-' J spectfnl or nukind word concerning\ F a miuister." That is what we overly . heard a young woman say not long ago. She paid her parents a very high compliment, and described a con- dition of things wliieh should find a counterpart in every Christian home in the laud. Ministers are men. They are not perfect. There are Haws in character and inconsistences in life. Km ninny:'[persons magnify molehill infirmities t, into mountains of real badness. Tinreckless handling of ministerial repu- \ tntinn is one of the llairrant sins of .\ r our time. Poisoned arrows are shot fiom a thousand bows. A minister's ^ ; reputation is his capital. It is everythiug. You might "a hundred times * better burn his home than unjustly l ?- assail his good name. As well way- I lay him and stab him in the heart as A > break down public conlidence in his i, f?s in integrity and religious character. I' A bad man should not be excused nor [' f shielded because he carries the shcp- a [ . herd's crook. But the fact that he ^ carries that crook should not subject r Mm in nrmiQtnrwl nmlifrnaiit eriticislll. A We plead for fair play. j* Christians should be outspoken and L true-blue in loyalty to their minister, i. Many are against him. They should be for him with emphasis. Many are ^ talking him down. They should talk a him up. vp. Suppose he does not i just suit you. He cannot suit every- & body, and he is an ideal pastor in the estimation of a good many people who know almost as you do. Kind words count. Speak them often. Allow no one to speak disparagingly of the minister in your presence. Give the faithful man a lift every little while. Talk , him up. Talk him up in the church. Talk him up in the home. Talk him A ^ ; - 4.? riv. i?_ , . up in society, iuik mm up uu uic street, in the shop, 011 the cur.*, every- L where! He will take courage. Will J' preach better sermons. Will put in- i. creased enthusiasm into all his multi plied duties. Will win gloriously. And you will have the great joy of A knowing that your bracing words A proved a real tonic and helped the L dear soul to conquests he never could l have achieved while struggling alone. ^ Forks. y The earliest distinct mention of the [ established use of forks occurs in a cu- L rious passage of L'oryates' "urutiities," a singular book of travels published in England in 1011. The l anthor says : "Here I will meniion a thing that might have been spoken of a before in the discourse of the first Hal- " ian towns. I observed a custom in all f > these Italian cities and towns through L which 2 fussed that is not used in any l other country I saw in my travels, ? neither do I think any other nation of A Christendom doth use*it, but only in Jtaiy. me iianaus, anu iwsu iuusi o strangers that are travelling in Italy, do always at their meals use a little ti L lork when they cut their meat." u To Destroy Stumps. Bore a hole 1 inch in diameter, 18 inches deep, into the center of the " stumps, and put in 1 ounce of saltpeter, filling up with water and plug *v giug up the hole. This should be done in the fall. In the spring the plug is to be taken out, a half a gill i of kerosene poured into the hole and set on fire. It will burn out the stump to the farthest root. 2. In the fall bore a hole 1 inch in diameter, It) inches deep, into the . j center of the stump, and put in a half s pound of vitrol and plug very tight. 2 | In the spring the whole stump ami roots through all their ramifications s will bo so rotted as to be easily re- f ? " moved. Umbrellas will last much longer if f when they are wet, they are placed, handle downward to dry. The moisture falls from the edges of the frame, and the fabric dries uniformly. If stood handle upward, as is commonly the case, the top of the umbrella holds the moisture, owing to the lining unf. derueath the ring; it consequently takes a long time to dry, and injures the silk or other fabric with which it -d iscovered. This is the main cause of the umbrella wearing out so soon at fc, the top. Umbrella cases are responsible for the wear of silk. The above from our exchange shows that some one else is trying to teach what we have been suggesting to rliffprpnt npnnlp for more thnn a soon* X 1 of years; yet many of our wet-day unbrella friends still carry a rock in j one end of tlieir bag to balance the pumpkin in the other end. Ed. C. N. Hold Fast To That Which Is ~ Good.?It is holding this in order to :i get that. The shallow mind fancies that it can obtain the new only by .1 casting away the old ; the wise mind knows thet if it rejects any fact or . truth or good it has, it lessens by so much its power to acquire more, To r the capacious and candid soul all truth < is precious. That it is new does not k commend it; that it is old does not dis- ( - credit it. That it is truth makes it welcome. For Pilks.?Take Jamestown, or "Jimpson" leaves, boil them down !<? a very strong tea. Take fresh butter and nmk a salve or ointment and anoint the diseased parts and you will find relief. ~ There's many a good bit ?' work r done with a sail heart.?Adam Uede. , _____________?_ Medical Notice. 1I/E the undersigned have formed a co-nni tVV nershlp under the firm name and style of Mabry & S'enft'er for the practice of MKDI CINE and BURGERY in all their branches.
