The rejection by the United States Senate of the international compact to keep firearms and liquors out of Africa is a national disgrace. The French Government is taking action against the adulterated drinks so commonly used by the masses. The lift-insurance companies have discovered some startling facts relating to the shortening of life through these beverages, and the knowledge is wakiog up people of many classes. There is significance in the fact that two of the largest manufactories ol weapons of warfare in the country have turned their forces?or a part of ? their forces at least?to the manufacture of "weapons of peace." The Remington Company are becoming more widely known for their typewriters than they ever were for their rifles, and the famous old Colt's Armory is now used for the mauufacture of the "Colt's Armory printing press," one of the leading job presses in the market.?Peace Banner. One of the daily papers calls attention to the rapidity with which our large cities are ceasing to be American, Citing Chicago as an example, where ?Ht of ]72,7o6 vot?s cast at a recent election, 88,509 were cast by uatural% - ized citizens. This is true of many \ parts of tbe country as well as cities. A writer in a recent number of The Forum points out the fact that throoghoyt the great West American farmers are leaving the country and moving with their families into the ""^"cities, while the farms are being taken bp by foreigners. There are large districts in Ohio and Western Pennsyl vania once occupied by American farmers where a complete change has - taken place within a few years. Methodist churches lu the country which were once strong aud thrifty are now almost deserted because the American population have left and tier man infidels have taken their place. We have consoled ourselves that, although the cities might be overrun with the worst classes of immigrants and ruled by saloon and anti-Sabbath sentiments, the country was safe on account of the conservative elements in the rural districts. At the present rate, however, not only the cities but the whole country Will soon lose itH American distinctions. The question to be answered is not: "Are our uuies ceasing 10 in* American ?" but rather: "How lonsr will it be until the men of pure American stock will be a curiosity?" With ) smail American families constantly becoming smaller, with foreigners pouring in by the million and multiplying as races naturally do before they attain the higher types of civilization, the prospects or the genuine American stock are not bright.
