Whatever may have been the fears ol some of r?ur neoDle. t tie couiitry Is not yet ruined. The Governor's inaugural address was au ' able conservative paper. The Legislature did not do any particular harm thut we know ot, and that body refused to do much, for which we are very thankful, While the tax levy Is a fraction of a niilj less than It was last year, yet, we believe the appropriations aggregated a larger amount tlian did the appropriations of the preceding \ year. The receipts from the phosphate royal' ty was larger, and the assessments for the cur. - > rent year Is several millions larger. The members of the House anil Senate from ; Abbeville county are said to be above the avernge In looks and ability, and Governor Gary has received hign praise from the newspapers f <r the manner in which he presided over the Senate. For the defeat of the marriage license the public should be grateful. The Jim Crow car bill was also defeated. This, we think, was well for the public, li I he! railroads had been forced to furnish a seporniA train of ears or coaches for white and ~ colored passengers, the fare would have been jV.j' necessarily increased. The Governor vetoed the proposed new railroad commission law. The veto was all right, but It seems that a subscription should have ,^ 4 been taken up for the benefit of the disappointed candidates for the offices which the r bill created. The South Carolina Col lege was allowed to go on as heretofore, to the end of the present session. That was well. But it isequaliy well that the number of professors be reduced ai ** ?' ' ' ?u VOQ T* least one-nan, wmcn win ikuuuo uv... The Governor has made no great change Id the appointive offices In this county, and as rV mr as we know, he has not offended this people by any appointment. On the whole, we are disposed to look hopefully to the future. The Legislature Is an honest and patriotic body, and Governor Tillman, we trust, wll: keep a level bead on his shoulders, and bi Governor of the whole people, respectful and deferential to tho wants and wishes of all. Colonel Robertson Is named as one of twenty of the best looking members of the House, and we all know that he did efficient se'- vice [ in the Houbo. Representatives Todd, Gary, Graham, and p. Oarwile, each did good service on committees and otherwise. (iood Showing. ; _ We publish this week the flunl settlemenl sheet of Captain J. Wr. The people, as a rule, are beginning to real Ize the fact that there is no advantage of sub ^ scribing stock for which they are unable to pay?except by borrowing back eighty percent. of their own money. Suppose, for Instance, a farmer has $100 In cash with which he expects to make bis crop ' If, instead of keeping bis money In bis pock et, be buys stock In the bank, and theu borrows eighty per cent, of It back, he slmpl) 1 pays Interest to the bank, and to thai extent is a loser. Nocommuulty?nor auy number of Individuals who borrow money?can by the mere passing of resolutions, and subscribing stuck, become capitalists, and the Idea that everj ' man may borrow from the bank a Inrgei amount than he puts in is about like pattirg ' In a hide and drawing out a whole tan yuidThe Idea that four hundred Impecunious men can organize a bank from which each one of them can borrow all or more than he r_ puts in, is perhaps one of llio strangest undertakings of the age, and it is delusion foi which there is no accounting. The farmersof this country need the ready cash with which tq^giatte their crops, aud yet strange to say, when men with money In >*. hand, otrer to furnish the needed cash, thesi same men have refused to accept the offer oi wlinl they most need. f" ? Third? Then elect a suitable man to fill the vacancy on the Circuit Bench. The Proponed Extra Session. Unless it be necessary to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of the late Chief Jusi tlce, it Is said that the Governor is opposed to calling of an extra session of the Legislature. It Is also denied that the Attoroey-General i has given opinion favorable to the re-convenIng of the Legislature. It isa fact beyond question that the election of a new Judge would not be of much advati II- Vtaln tho Imnnlals UlgC UUW. I1C WUIU UUb iltip iUV ikwvviMw Justices to decide the dockets which he did not hear. As the Associate Justices will, therefore, . either have to do all the work themselves, or , In order to get assistance from the new Judge muBt be put to the great trouble of giving all the cases i new hearing, it is fair to presume that neither of the Associate Justices will want help, which Is so dearly got. Tho Idea i of Inflicting such a calamity on Judges who have worked as faithfully as have our Asso ciute Justices, must be fearful to contemplate. Needed Laws. We need a law which shall prescribe ten years' imprisonment in the penitentiary for any person who may point and snap an unloaded pistol at anybody. We also need a law which will hang the parents of children, who lock theift up In their houses, and then go off, to let the build tug onrn uown una aesiroy ineir uuppnuif. We need u law which would declare vacant the office of any Sheriff who allows his prisoner to be lynched. Sheriffs should be Instructed to furnish the proposed victims with Winchester rifles, thus enabling them to protect themselves from the assaults o1 lynchers. We Bee accounts In the newspapers which state that many Christian people celebrated the chief event in the Christian calender by drunkenness, fighting, gambling, etc. The people of no other religion desecrate their religious holidays by debauchery and other wicked practices. What Sny Yon ? We propose, as a piece of interesting matter, to publish our entire subscription Met In a little while from now. The names are arranged alphabetically at each post office, showing the date to which each subscriber has paid. In order that we may make as good a showing as possible it is hoped that our friends will call attention to any errors which may exist as to the dfetcs opposite their names, and we would feel further fratilied If every Hubsci iber would pay up before we make the publication?this last request being as much in behuif of the credit of the list as for our own profit, . In order that all may have an opportunity to pay up before the publlcatlou, we give notice now of our Intention to do so. tf Death of Alexander D. Smith. On Friday morning Janaary 2, 1891, at 4 . 'clock the spirit of Alexander Davenport Smith took Its flight to the God who gave it. The deceased was born near McCormlck In the year 1835, ana was happily married to Miss Eliza Gable on the 21th day of January 1850. As a business man a number of years were *pent in the city of Augusta, Ga. He afterwards returned to McCormlck and from there to Mount Carmel where be engaged in the mercantile business, and whs u member o; the firm of W. N. Mercier & Co. As a business man he was industrious, honest, and apable, and by these qualities won many friends to himself. As a gentleman he was affable in manner, courteous and polite to all, having the respect and esteem of all who knew him. Asa citizen he was active and useful, and was always ready to defend the right. As a husband he was faithful, devoted and true. Ak u father tie was indulgent, geuue and kind, aud as a Christian be was exemplary in his lite, and died ax be lived, a faithful member of the Methodist church, trusting In his Saviour wbogulded hint all through the Journey of life, and who was with him to sustain aud comfort him in hie last trying Hours. His Illness was protracted, and painful yet lie murmured not, but bore it with Christian tortltude, and bowed in meek submission, counting it worlhy to ''suffer as well as to do his Mahler's will." He was a constant reader of ihe Bible, and hud many select passages marked, all of which he daily read during his Illness, and from which he seemed to derive great spiritual comfort. At the time of his death he was a Sundayschool superlnlendant in the Methodist church of Mount Carmel, which honorable position he had 11 lied for several years with .i #*\ hlmtfolf cin/1 In fho onMtnul crruiri of those committed to bis care. His remains were taken to the city of Augusta, ami the funeral services conducted by Rev. A. F. Berry, of Abbeville, assisted by Rev. Mr. Frazier pastor ol Broad street Meili>dlst church from which they were taken and gently laid to rest by loving hoods in the city cemetery there to await tne resurrection morn. He leaves a bereaved wife and seven sorowing children, together with a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn ills loss, out they sorrow not as those without hope, lutare com lor ted by the thought that he will be their guiding star to draw them nearer to the "City ol Gold," and will ever stand in the "Beautiful Gate" waiting and watching for them, remembering he is not dead, out just begins to live in that bright "Reautl. ail home of the Soul." l'here is no death ! an angel form walks on the earth with silent tread, And softly bears our loved away, and then we we call them dead. There is no death! they're only gone, transplant in the heavenly laud; They're singing now the gnld new song aruid the angel toand. A FRIEND. PREACHER AND PEOPLE. Kpi.
