V; I What Otliois Say. S. S. Thnrx. We do not know when or how often our presence is overshadowing :inother's soul. We can he present, for good or for evil, in other people's souls, and yet not know it. Our presence is often present to others when our person is absent. Thus our personality reduplicates itself wonderfully in the souls of associates, and tempts, or shapes, or stimulates, or Inspires, when we ourselves are unconscious of the fact. In the strife and stress of living, amongst the faces of the crowd and the hurrying throngs on the street, under fears and failures and bitter questionings, at the crisis of endeavor, or the instant of perilous temptation, some presence of an absent one within our inner soul may be its guardian and preserving angel. Could we fully see how our presences, our invisible *1 A selves, hover m me sou is m unw ?in? have intercourse with us, we would understand God's purposes with our lives, and the value of our lives, more fully than we do. Could we, on the other hand, perceive clearly all those {>resences of others, too diui frequenty for recognition by our consciousness, which are enshrined within our own soul, constantly lifting it up. or ready to press their gentle influences at a critical moment, we would see the real cause of many of our successes, and give credit, not to our own powers, but to those personalities without and bove and yet within us, who have , done so much to make us what we are. St. Louis Christian Aih'ocatr. We believe with all our heart that what the Southern Methodist Church needs, (and for that matter what every church needs) is a great baptism of the Holy Ghost?a quickening along the line of what is known to Methodism as Christian perfection, or perfect love, the seeking after and obtaining entire sanctiflcation until soul and body, spirit and life snail i;nrisrs glorious image bear. We do not think we are very needy along the lines of might or power, but we should be thirsting and longing "To higher rise and deeper sink and to perfection grow." Not more of activity but more divine strength to make our activities felt, do we need ; not more organizations, but more of Christ's fulness to drive the organizations we have to his glory. Not more gifts, but more grace; not more in the head, but more in the heart. The Westminster Confession*.? The Evangelist thinks the Confession does need revision in some places. For example, that part concerning the doctrine of reprobation. Quoting two sentences it says: "This seems to us not only an unfortunate way of stating reprobation, but . bad and mischievous in the highest degree. How does a man who reads this for the first time, understand it? Why, simply that 'if he is elected, he will be saveJ anyhow; and that, if litis not elected, he will be damned, do what he will!' A statement so framed as to be capable of such an interpretaHrm ion trim to catch souls. Neve I did the wit of man devise n sentence more ingeniously contrived to confuse, bewilder and dishearten any poor sinner trying to find his way into the kingdom of God." ^? S. 8. Times. How seldom, in deciding a present course of action, do we consider what I the memory of that course will lie to us all through life ! It may he more painful, ten years hence, to hear the recollection of what wrong or doubtful thing we are willing to do now, than it is to bear a present twinge of conscience. And it may l>e a much keener delight to remember a past struggle to overcome a temptation or other difficulty, than would have been any mere temporary relief by succumhirg to the dilllculty or yielding to the temptation. Every oric ought tocouut the Nemesis of a future memory a restraint against wrong and a stimulus to right. A passage in "Life of Lincoln," to be found in the November Century, 8hows as nothing else can how great I**-, fi menu was lost 10 im* oouim wihmi Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. It is the first publication ever made ot the draft of a message and proclamation which the President submitted to his Cabinet on four hundred millions as an indemnity to slaveholders, complete pardon for political oflenses, and the release of confiscated property except under certain circumstances. Such magnamiuity was, however, too ijiuelrfdrhis councilors, who "unani^-monsly disapproved." Along with x the document is giyen a full account ol this best kept of Cabinet secrets. Nashville Advocate. The young man who is lazy, dissipatedj aud extravagant need not go West to better his condition. That sort touch bottom out there at once. What he needs is a new manhood, not a new place of residence. Richard Oobdrn. We advocate the cause of Arbitra tion, in lieu of fighting, for the settlcment of disputes; and, surely, any body above the rank of savages would say that it is a desirable end to accomplish. Ended---Bcgmi. ; It is ten or twelve days since the sun reached his limit in the Southern sky; he has turned about and wheels his shining spiral Northward. Capricorn is visited, and the south temperate zone marks the zenith of its hot summer, and we whirl on (a uur perihelion, about December 31, when we arc three million miles nearer the sun than v we shall be at our north temperate summer. But our axis, true to its star, brings our zone under more direct solar influence, and the astronomic t rifle i of three million miles greater distance is more than repaired. What beauty, what grandeur hinted in these facts learned by the child at school; how wonderful the skill that reads the writing of God in the heavens; to what vast expanse, what awful heights of sublimity is the human mind admitted. Who can comprehend Him! Yet "this awful C*od is ours." lie is no only Creator hut friend. The study of works, superficial as it must he, euno hies the mind, lifts it to Him, glorifies Him. To adore, to love is our privilege, let all draw nearer to him in his works, and let the New Year mark the beginning of strivings after greater knowledge of Him both as Creator and friend. i ^ Who is wise? He that learns from everyone. Who is powerful ? He tlmtj governs his passions. Who is lieh? He that is content. _r>. The people we found to ho intelligent, agreeable, ami pious. We invoke the J5il>le blessing of peaco up(>u them ; for they received, and entertained us kindly, and we were the recipients of valued kindness upon our departure. The good people of Greenwood and vicinity have received us cordially, and with tokens of kindness that reminded us of other days, and dear friends, in other charges served by us. Friends in town and from the country have sent us substantial and delicacies, which have for us an intrinsic value, far beyond their market price. We have a beautiful lot; eligible and convenient to church and school, upon which we hope to have a comfortable District parsonage in the near future? From the visible indications of thriftand enlargement present, Greenwood is destined to be a city of surpassing commercial importance in this portion of the Stale. We must try to see to ii that the church and morality have ji /lnrol/innuiiit At lll'OSOllt. , J , we are in an unfinished house, inconvenient to church and other privileges, but we must submit as cheerfully as possible, as the best that we can do temporarily. At home and in the community, we have just now some pleasant visitors from our Colleges in Spartanburg and Columbia. The young ladies and young men are at home for the holidays. I think we have more young men at WoHbrd from the Cokesbury District this year, than from any other in the Conference outside of Spartanbury. I would that we could boast of at least an equal number of young ladies in our College at Columbia. We ought to have them. While there are several institutions of learning for young ladies in this lip couuntry, we have the right to claim a larger jmtrouage for our own College, from our own people; especially when we can ofler advantages e<itial to the best. I n this faith we shall continue our urgent efforts publicly, and in the homes oi the parents, to increase our patronage at Columbia. 11' some of our preachers have been subjected to inconvenience by removal, I hope they will lind abundant compensation in the cointorts and successes of the year. A happy New Year to you ai d yours, including all your readers. May you have many new .subscribers with enlarged usefulness. The origin of "windfall," in the sense of "good luck," dates from the time of William the Conqueror. It was then a criminal oflen.se to cut timber iu the forests. Only sueh could he gathered as the wind had blown down ; hence a heavy wind-storm was hailed by the peasiuits as so much good luck, and from this comes its modern application. Prof. Pruminond says: "Christ built no church,'wrote no book, left no money, erected no monuments; yet show me ten square miles anywhere on earth without Christianity, where the life of man and the purity of woman are respected, and 1 will give up Christianity." Many people iron towels and put them away before they are dry. This is an error, and sometimes leads to Jesuits not expected.
