At the Door. A hand tapped at my door, low down, low down, I opened It and saw two eyes of brown. Two lips ot cherry red, A little curly head, A bonny, fairy sprite. In dress of white. Who nald. with lifted face, "Fapa, good night." She climbed upon my knee, and kneeling there. Lisped softly, solemnly, her little prayer; ' Her meeting finger tips. Her pure, sweet baby lips, Carried my soul with hers, half unaware, Into some clearer and diviner air. otrain Knt all in Vftin. X incu IV jiiv , Of scientific thought the subtle chain; So small, so small, My learning all; Though I could call each star and tell its place, My child's "Our Father" bridged the gulf of space. I sat with folded hands at rest, at rest, Turning this solemn thought within my breast; How faith would fade If God had made No children in this world?do baby ageOnly the prudent man or thoughtful sage. Only the woman wise, no little arms To clasp around our neck; no baby charms, No loving care, No sinless prayer, No thrHl of lisping song, no pattering feet, No infant heart against our heart to beat. Then if a tiny hand, low down," Tap at the heart or door, ah! do not frown : Bend low to meet The little feet, To clasp the clinging hand; the child will be Nearer heaven than thee?nearer than thee. . Lillie E. Bark. Let us be like trees, that yield their fruit to those who throw stones at them. | A man can not do good or evil to others without doing good or evil to himself. . Toil either of the brain, of the heart, or of the hand is the only true man UUUUy UIC U111J II uu iivuiitbj. O, it is an emblem of heaven to love all the world with the love of kindness, forgiveness and benevolence. Personal work for Christ is a vague expression. Go and do something for some needy fellow-creature. That is definite. The absence of any kind of anxiety for the spread of the truth, implies spiritual paralysis, if it does not imply actual spiritual death. Prayer may not bring us money, but it brings us what no money can buy? a power to keep froth sin and be content with God's will. Good nature and good manners may be classed under "whatsoever things are lovely" in entire satisfaction?both essential and ornamental. Much as friends add to the happiness and value of life, we must in the main depend on ourselves; and every one is his own best friend or his worst enemy. Because Christ loves us. he claims us, and desires to have us wholly yielded to his will, so that the operations of love in and for us may find no hindrance. When you move toward God in your desire, he moves toward you in gracious help. When you touch him with faith, he touches you with instant salvation. This is his gospel. Enjoy the blessings of this day, if God sends them, and the evils of it bear patiently and sweetly, for this day only is ours; we are dead to yesterday, and we are not yet born to tomorrow. It is not the "flesh," nor the "eye," nor the "life" which are forbidden, but it is the lust of flesh and the eyes and the pride of life. It is not this nn* tVio man whn inhahif, it. nor UU1 VUV JUAVtA ff , the sphere of our legitimate activity that we do not love, but the way in which the love is given, which constitutes worldliness. Uses of Salt.?Carpets may be greatly brightened by first sweeping thoroughly and then goiDg over tnem with a clean cloth and clear salt and water. Use a cupful of coarse salt to a large basin of water. Salt as a toothpowder is better than most anything that can be bought. It keeps the teeth brilliantly white and the gums hard and rosy. If, after having a tooth pulled, the mouth is filled with salt and water it will allay the danger of having a hemorrhage.?Sel. A good story is told of Governor Tom Bennett, who presided over the destinies of Idaho more than a decade ago. A member of the Legislature who had been annoyed by his neighbor's hog introduced a bill compelling the owner of the prescribed animal to keep him within the limits of a pen. The bill passed and went up to Governor Bennett for his approval. To the surprise of the members and the chagrin of its sponsor, it was returned with his veto. When asked for a reason he exclaimed: "I don't believe in the bill in the first place, and if I did, I wouldn't siim a bill that SDelled hoc with a biir Kfand Governor with a little g." itounimenT IWI8Hto announce to tbe public that 1 will be In Abbeville In a few day6 and will bring with me my Optical Instruments tor fitting spectacles and eye-glasses in a scientific manner.
