Ho is Calling-. BY J. M. CLEMENT, JR. , Hearken, children, to the Saviour! He Is calling yon to-day; From the paths of sin and folly, Turn your roving feet away: Drink ye of the living fountain, Live with Christ for evermore In that many-mansion dwelling On that bright supernal shore. He Is calling. He is calling, He is calling, little children, why delay! He is calling, He is calling. He Is calling little children every day. He is calling little children From the barren fields of sin. Blessing them, he bids his shepherds Tenderly to take them, Shield them from approaching danger, Shelter them from every harm, . Lead them all to living pastures. Rest them 'neath a guarding arm. He is calling little children. To engage with heart and hand. In the tending of His vineyard, In the tilling of His land; Though their little hands are tender, Yet some wont iney an may nna, For the Lord has always pleDty Work to do of every kind. When their toiling here Is over, He will take them home to rest In that many-mansion dwelling Of the faithful and the blest; There with Jesus Christ their Saviour, They shall dwell for evermore, Free from labor, sin and sorrow, On that bright supernal shore. jjr ( j I . The Present and the Futore?Analogy. Once we were living in a house, with the owner'8 threat to sell hanging over us. If only it had been ours we could have felt "settled," but it was not nor could be, for its price was above our ability. Should we beautify . the grounds or should we not? At times we felt that to do so would, perf haps, be labor lost, for too soon might follow a notice to leave ; again it seemed impossible to live longer without the many little, conveniences and attractions that go to make up a home such as should surround growing children. Even if the place must be given up it seemed best to improve the time, uncertain though it might be. "We will get the personal benefit of the labor ana interest spent upon it?the passing good?and others if not ourselves may receive the reward of the work, so it was determined that we should redeem the time. Being in a meditative mood one day an analogy sprung into miud, the similarity between our present and our future interests. The soul too is a tenant at will, liable at any moment to be served with a notice to quit, a writ of eiectment, more peremptory, indeed, than the summons of anv landlord. But because this is true should we sit with folded hands waiting to receive these orders? Were not the time better spent in making life beautiful, in helping others over their rough places, in comforting the weary-hearted by showing thoughtful kindnesses, in doing all that is possible to make less unhappy those about us? It i9 so easy to talk, it is so easy to write, it is so hard to do the very best at every moment? who does ? After-thought is but folly, fore-thought alone is the true wisdom, for what good to a drowned man are a score of rescuing parties?a slender rope at the right time would have saved him, a thousand physicians now cannot revive him. And so it matters not whether we live out our three score years and ten?while we do live let us try to do our best in every hour we live?let the most despairing pick up the broken threads of life, and weave as bright a web as may be?the past may not be wholly repaired perhaps, but let the future copy a fairer pattern. ?Now and then. We always like those who admire us. We do not always like whom we admire. To owe gratitude oppresses a coarse nature; to receive it oppresses a fine one. He who seeks repentance for the past should woo the angel virtue for the future. ; , In angry moment a man may do what a lifetime of repentance can not undo. Nothing is so indicative of deepest culture as a tender consideration of the ignorant. A great many men who start out to reform the world leave themselves for the last job. "Just being in a hurry all over," is . " the fit description a little girl gave of nervousness. Leather belts run with grain side to the pulley will drive 30 per cent, more than if run with flesh side. No state can be more destitute than that of a person who, when the delights of sense forsake him, has no pleasures of the mind. If you would be a clear speaker, aim at clearness of thinking; if you would be a clear thinker, aim at clearness of speaking. t _ COLUMBIA & GREENVILLE DIV CONDENSED SCHEDULE.
