-v. ' "A-Defective Flue." How often a defective flue i9 said to have beeu the occasion of a Are that consumed the kitchen or other building in which the fire originated, and often other houses with contents, more or less valuable, are also burned to ashen. While defectiveness in the flue may not be the occasion of the fire every time it is so said yet it is too often the case. In what respect was the flue defective? Probably no one can tell except the man who did the job, and he may be miles away, and if he were present what he might say or do could not repair the damage. Was the material defective or was the flue 'not put up right or was it both with a workman to correspond. But when the material is good and the flue defective the vedict is against the "contractor," the "buildar >? tho "pornpnter" or the "mason," albeit each and any of these is "notj to blame"?let the guilty as well as thej honest t?ll his own tale. The fire in the stove orcliimney tries the work of the workman as to "what aort itis," and is generally a test sam; ' ork t^r-'iehout the job, . thouyii ti;o de:tK tivene8i? in other parts of the "job" are so hid away by veneering?plastering, painting &c, as that it may not be found out for some time after the "flue" builder has got his money and gone.
