Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1889. __ _ The Abbeville National Rank. f The stockholders of the Abbeville National R-, Bank held their Annual Meeting yesterday. The following directors were elected : J. Allen Smith, L. W. White, J. N. Youne, Geo. W. Williams, R. M. Haddon, W. C. McGowan, J. G. Edwards. Mr. Parker declined re-elecllon. After the meeting of the stockholders, the directors met and elected the following offl cere: President?J. Allen Smith. Cashier? BenJ. S. Barnwell. Teller?Frank H. Wardlaw. The Bank with such directors and officers as control the Abbeville National Bank must command the confidence of the public. Each and all are practical men of personal worth, possessing the best business qualifications. The affairs of the Bank are in a condition moat satisfactory to the stockholders and the Bank Is now in a condition to let out an Indefinite amount of read}- money. In fact, they have all the money at their command which may be needed for any purpose. The newly elected President, J. Allen Smith, ueceed8 Preaident Wardlaw, whose death was but lately announced. Mr. Smith Is one 'of the very best business men in the county, v- , Conscientious, courteous, competent and obliging, bis management of the Bank will be satisfactory to the public and profitable to the stockboldsrs. He will manage the Bank on business principles alone, while his independence of character, with a sufficiency ol will power, enables him to deal with the Jioanoeo of the Bank, with no other consideration than the interests of those whose money is entrusted to his care. Aa a gentleman and neighbor no man stands higher with the people than J. Allen Smith, and his eleotlon attests the esteem In which ijr he Is held In the business circles of Abbeville In connection with this we would suggest I to our citizens the propriety of depositing S? their surplus money in the great fireproof. vault of the Institution. The officers 01 mc fc v Bank will pay It out on checks to suit. Id thia course the citizen offers no inducement / to thieves to break into his house, and the other risks of keeping money about the house ?are avoided, On the other band, those of our citizens who may need help should make their arrangements to get money from the Bank. The pit. i tanoe in interest on money borrowed for sixty or ninety days, with privilege of renewal, is -nothing oompared to the inconvenience and expense incurred in scraping along on a credit . and paying fifty per cent profit. * \ Sale Day. Last Monday was Sale Day, and the largest crowd was hero that has been in town for many a day. The weather was almost Springlike, and the people came from every quarter, without any apeclal public occasion to draw them thither. Vfry little, If any, property was sold by the public offloere. The voice of the auctioneer eould be beard much ot the time, as he pronounced eulogies oo tfie v rtues of {old, blind or spavined horses, or extolled the excellence of ;a "quart" cow, or magnified the worth of aged, onceyed bob-tailed oxen as beef cattle. The merchants were in doors all day, busy serving customers with the best of bargains. < If the law is enforced there is no doubt of v ita benlflclal results. If the law is inefficient then let the people demand any needed amendment. There should bean officer whose doty It is to see that the law is enforced. This was the first public gathering since the bars were closed and this was the soberest and Bk;" most orderly crowd that ever assembled piit. - anywhere. Whisky was saught at all places where H was thought there was a possibility of getting ' It, but the town was dry for once, anditbas been said that many a wife was surprised lust Monday night wbeu their husbands come bome sober. m3%r- j Farmer After Governor Richardson. Doubtless the session of the Legislature Just r adjourned has been watched with as much interest as any that has heretofore convened 1 n oar State. This is mainly attributable to the fact, that the last cainpalgne was conducted upon certain Issues of economy and reform wnlch were prominently brought before the candidates and which influenced more or ,< :* i lass, every Intelligent vote cast lc the election. Conspicuous among those issues, and one which towered above all others in importance, was the establishment of an Agrlcul>' ' tural College, and the acceptance of the Clem. son bequest. This was the burning question of the campalgne. and upon it, the views of ' every candidate from the Chief Executive to _f/^vVthe representative, were demanded by the The reanlt of Rnch Issues in Abbeville Coun ty was ibe election of an able delegation of reformers, and advocates of an Agricultural College, that reflected credit upon our Counv ty, and tbelr successful labors deserve the plaudits of an appreciative constituency. ? Similar results followed tbe election In a ma Jority of the Counties of the State, as evM denced by tbe passage of various economic measures In tbe house, and especially the overwhelming vote In favor of accepting the ' ClemsoD bequest, and establishing said College. For this measure, both tne Governor and Lieutenant Governor pledged their supi port daring the campaigne. As far as the > Lieutenant Governor was concerned, we find ti his promises sacredly kept, for when the bill * had passed tbe house and had entered that V * adtocratlo body, the Senate, and was threat \ eoea with strangulation by the "Bourbon * ' ring," he stepped into the breech and de manded that the voice of the people should be > heeded. Howstandsthe case with Governor Rich5. ardson ? While he poised during the campaigne as tbe friend of the former, and as in favor of tbe establishment of an Agricultural College, # we will refer particularly to the political & meeting at Hodges, at which tbe citizens of Abbeville County heard him unequivocally express himself In favor of tbe matters at is- ' sue. With an eloquence and pathos worthy of a nobler cause, aid he boast or his familiarity with a gopher and a bull tongue plow, and pledged bis support to tbe establishment of an Agricultural College and the acceptance of tbe Clerason bequest But, presto! hear him ; when elected, when the bill for the accept- < ance of the beauest Is presented lor his signa bUlC, UC Vli kuauj tciuvo U 111 OUOCl, uy pUVJKeting It for a year, solely on the ground that be has the constitutional right, uud that the !/'* billlBofaucb Importance as to need longer ?i> time for consideration. Ah, Indeed! Longer ^ time tooonslder a matter which has been discussed in a three month's campalgne upon every stump in Carolina, from the Mountains to tne sea-board? Longer time to cousider tbe propriety of the State simply expressing a willingness to accept a bequest, in accordance with the decisions of the court, without assuming the responsibilities of any pending litigation, and especially when the greater part of the bequest Is the sole proprietor of p < the testator, and bas no other possible claimant? Longer time to consider the constitutionality of keeping Inviolate pledges sacredly made, and of sustaining the dignity and bonor or the State of South Carolina? While history points the finger of scorn to ft Benedict Arnold, who betrayed his conntry for flltry lucre, to-day we can with equal jusi tloe point the finger of scorn to the tnau, who plighted his word, and betrayed the confluence of bis countrymen to pander to tbe wishes of a "Bourbon ring," and thus bring reproach upon the pure escutcheon of our (State. As well attempt to darn up tbe waters of the Mississippi, as to try to check the tidal wave of relorm which is sweeping the State, and which sooner or later will remaud to private life, those who tamper with the suflrages and stifle the voice of a free and intelligent people, and thus learn them that sacred promises made before elections should be kept as Inviolate as tbe constitution Itself. gfiV. McNeil a prominent citizen of Abbovllle County, and an old resident of this place, was run over by the Greenville bound train and nearly killed. It seoms that Mr. McNeil had left the freight ir-nin wiiinh ho 11 n nn from Bradlev and which wns derailed about a mile from town, and had started to walk up to town. It is presumed that he came up the A. and K. track, which runs parallel with the C. and G. track, and as the up train to Greenville came up the track and was nearing him, Mr. McNeil stepSed off the A. and K. track on to the U. and . track. There were some box cjirs standing on a side track which was close to the main track and on a slight curve, and which obscured him from sight until the train was right upon him. As soon as the engineer discovered Mr. McNeil he blew the danger signal, reversed his engine and put on orakes, but it was too late, the sad and fatal work was done. Mr. McNeil failed to get off in time and was run over. His right foot was severed at the instep, his face was badly bruised on the side, and a cut on top of his head. Frieuds rushed to him and found him in a senseless condition. He was Immediately taken up and carried to Kiloy's hotel, and was attended to by Drs. Maxwell, Tnggart, Cobb, Swygert and Hughey. They dressed his wounds and gave him every attention in their power to save him but to no avatl. His family who had recently moved to Newberry was immediately telegraphed for, and also his son Dr. A. P. McNeil of Florida. Mrs. McNeil and son and daughter, and Mrs. Godsey arrived on the next train. Dr. A. P. McNeil did not arrive until Saturday night. Mr. Mc Nell survived until Friday night when he died at 3:25. He never recovered consciousness, but passed peacefully and painlessly away. His remains were Interred in the cemetery at this place. On last Sunday an altercation took place at the colored Methodist church near NinetySix, between Pink Floyd and Cornelius Louden. The difficulty seems to have commenced In a play and ended in murder, Louden having his throat cut. from which he died In two hours.
