Extracts from Lowndesville Advertiser TELESCOPIC VIEWS FROM THE OBSERVATORY. Candidates? Preachers?Fishermen? Farmers?Politician* ? Doctors ? The Local Has Hid His Pen?"R. 8. Solid on Cheats. Due West, May 19,18S8. Mrs. Ida Bonner has been stricken with paralasis. Dr. Wideman is some better at this date. Mr. W. L. Miller is taking in the town and looks well. Capt. McGowan and Mr. Branch passed through town enroute for picnic at Irwin's mills. Maj. Nance has been quite unwell k for a week and failed to fulfill some 01. his appointments. He is up again. Prof. J. H. Miller has been invited to deliver a speech during the meeting of the Teachers State Institute, which occurs on the 11th, 12th, and 13th of July. We hope the Professor will comply. Capt. J. N. King spent a couple of days in town last week. The Captain is making a rattling run for the Legislature and will get a good vote at tliis place. He is a good man. Miss Clara Sharp's school exhibition attracted quite a number from Due West. We understand the exercises were interesting. Maj. Nance made a speech, being called on. Decoration day was observed here on last Tuesday on account of the rain on the 10th. It was the most interesting occasion of the kind we have attended. Prof. Hood made a speech, followed by Dr. Grier. who also read a ? x* poem. Miss jonnson 01 tue reuiaic College read most charmingly a poem written by a Confederate soldier on the back of a Confederate note. Prof. Hood deserves credit for the interest he annually takes in this sad occasion. The report of the State Convention in the News and Courier created considerable excitement in Due West. It was a matter of surprise that a portion of Abbeville's delegation went back on Tillman and the Primaries. And also that not a single one of our delegation came to his rescue when he was combating so many. Tillman has risen largely in our estimation. He made a gallant fight. The farmers from one nH nf this state to the other should nobly come to his rescue. They | should see to it that the next fight, Tillman makes he have the voters (those that will stick to him) to back him. He was right in his fight against the ring and the nabobs. All honor to Tillman. He makes a good showing as reported in the Nexus and\ Courier. Dr. W. M. Grier spoke before .the Winthrop Training school in Columbia last Friday on "The Ethics of Literature." On Sabbath he preached for Dr. Wm. Adams, of Augusta. The Doctor is constantly kept on the v?ing?doing good. Mrs. H. P. McGee, Mr. McGee and Mr. M. B. Clinkscales attended the "Rorktiaf Convention in Richmond, Va., as (lefegates from this portion of the moral vine yard. They had a nice trip. We received a progam announcing the exercises of the dedication of! Trinity church, Atlanta, Ga., which took place recently. Dr. Lee the pastor was to preach the sermon. The exercises consumed the day and were interesting. Dr. Lathan preached a characteristic sermon last Sabbath on "Judas Iscariot." There were services last Sabbath in the Associate Reformed church, morning and evening notwithstanding the , rain. A crowd of anglers went to Martin's Mills last week. iq;. Cowan galloped > in the lead. Major Pearson has placed a squad of hands under Mr. P. R. Henry who has taken charge of the street depart meat and will do some excellent work. Dr. Edward Cowan and Mr. Erock have been appointed a i.carii <t Health. They will shortly visit the town on a tour of inspection. This "local" has Had his lots cleaned off 4 times since Christmas and his pig pen Eut so high that cyclone will have to unt for it. The announcement that the South Carolina College ha9 25 "tax eaters" is an eye opener. Let the Press and Banner open its batteries on this outrage. We hope Tillman and the Farmers will clean out this Augian stables completely this Fall. We don't see any hope of reform from any other quarter. Let the people send up representatives to tne Legislature who will stand by their interests. TVv^o anXT VinHv holipVA thnf. Allhp ville county, could send to a State Convention 10 more men lhan she ought to have there ? Or could send two Senators to the Senate ? The Charleston delegation, and the News and Courier would turn things "wrong side out" first. Yet Charleston clings to these wrongs. R. S. G. Immigration. Much is now being said all over our State on the subject of foreign immigration and as it is one of the living subjects which cannot be deferred, it is well for every one who has any interest of the future of this country, to try to have intelligent views of the entire subject. There are some things to be taken into consideration, as imperatively in favor of immigration, and should not be lost sight of in investigating the subject. That we have in our Southern country vast sections, which ought to be taken up, and improved, there can be no doubt, and that this is absolutely necessary to the material growth and prosperity of this country, is also an equally admitted fact. This admitted, we are naturally led to inquire, What can be done that all this may be realized ? Immigration seems to be the only means, however much we may fear and misgive as to the best methods to retaliate the matter. Our present population is not suftifionf hrinor ohanh the mur-.h needed development even if all were of the best class of laborers, but when we take into consideration how meagre are our efforts, after our old-fashioned methods, we are led to think it would take centuries to bring about the con dition of things now needed. A successful system of immigration is the thing needed, and nothing can be made to take its place. The scarcity of laborers in the South, with the vast territory, and the great demands for them, tend to demoralize, and what would otherwise be proflta Die is renaerea useless. One of the most universal complaints of our times is the unreliability of labor. It is in demand, and yet can not be controlled. Immigration would certainly bring more competition, and thereby enhance the value of both capital and labor. Of course something should be done in every act encouraging immigration to restrict or hold it amenable to our Christian civilization, so as not to be crushed by it, and at the same time make it a grand system for the educa tioo aud higher developments of the race. To my mind immigration is one of the finest opportunities for missionary work ever furnished a people. Some make this the great argument I against immigration. They dread the introduction of an element which will bring into our midst Catholicism and heathenism lest our Chriatianity becomes marred aud our Protestantism corrupted. Such fears grow out of a want of a I confidence in the solid forces of Chris| tianiiy. If it is desirable to convert the world ito the truth by sending single missionaries to the land of darkness then it jstrikes me that to encourage immigration is a much better plan than the sending missionaries, since it would make more solid our Christian forces and lessen the power or opposition. Wisely conducted, I believe that the system of immigrationwould be the best and fastest plan for Christianizing the world and that we as a peope should I exhaust our efforts in this direction bej fore we consume too much time, money, and men in our present missionary projects. { The following is a letter addressed by Mr. DuPre to each of the Committee appointed by tbe farmers' club, and should be attended to at once: Abbeville C. H., 8. C., May 14,1888. Dear Sir? Having been honored with a position on your Augusta National Exposition Committee, I beg to make a few sug rootinno xvhir?h i hone will meet with your approval. 1st. It is very important that your Committee have a meeting and organize for work. 2nd. What is done should be done at once in order to give all parties time I to select and prepare for any exhibits they propose to make. 3rd. 1 would suggest a meeting at this place, on the 24th inst. or at the latest on the 28th. Saleday will be almost too late and the Court will then be in session and interfere. 4th. It occurs to me that printed lists of all known products of the Field, Forest, Garden, Orchard, Mills, * 1 Mines, &c., sent 10 every liuemgciii. man asking him to select from said list any article or articles which he will agree to grow or provide would awaken a general interest throughout the country, and materially aid the Committee in their work. While these exhibits will be sent by individuals, and individuals will compete for premiums, yet the aggregate of these will make up our County Exhibit, and we may get that $1,000 Dollar prize. No charge will be made for space in the Exposition, and the Savannah Valley and the A. & K. Railroads will charge no freight on articles intended for exhibitions, yet a small sum of money should be raised to defray the necessary expense or printing, postage, &c. Yours very truly, J. F. 0. DuPre. i ^ Mr. Charlie Clinkscales returned home from Lexington last Saturday. He has been quite ill during his stay there, and as soon as he was able to travel he returned home. AVe hope he may soon be restored to his accustomed health. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Baskin, sympathize with them in the loss of their little girl, who died on the 16th instant.
