Mr. Editor : Please allow me space to say that the call for Mass Prohibition Convention to be held in Columbia, May 22 and 23, so numerously signed by the leading citizens of the State has nothing about third party in it, nor is it the purpose of those who requested signatures to this call to * form a third party. The mistake in regard to formation of a third party was corrected by the New? and Courier of the 6th instaDt, but was overlooked by part of the press of the State. We give space to the following, and would urge upon all who feel an interest in the successs of the temperance ca.use in Abbeville County to do all they can to make a success of this State Convention, so that let the tem_ perance cause may not be weakened by ite friends for want of defensive action, in opposition to its euemies : A call is made for the prohibitionists of South Carolina to meet in mass convention May 22 and 23,1888. The undersigned believfng that a more defiuite, and organized work for the legal Srohibitlon of the tarffic in alcohdic quors as a beverage should be undertaken and prosecuted by all temperance workers in the capacity of both I State and local associations, and that1 in all measures so important to the real prosperity of our Commonwealth as those touching the question of pro-! hibition there should be the utmost wisdom, efficiency and concord; therefore, in the name of the grand army of workers for prohibition now fast covering the globe, we formally request and urge that there shall be a convention at Columbia, S. C., beginJncr at 8. P. M. on .the 22d of May, in the Y. M. C. A. Hall, to consider various matters pertinent to the advancement of prohibition in our State and country at large. We make this appeal because we believe there should be a State organization and local alliances, and that general efforts should be made for more thorough restriction and prohibition of the liquor traffic. We urge this coming together at this time because we can conceive of no wisdom by further delay. Editor Register The call for a convention of Prohibitionists to be held in Columbia on the 22nd instant and pablished in the Register of the 10th instant was signed by us, believing that it was for the purpose solely of promoting the cause of temperance in this State. Since signing said paper, we see grave charges in print against the leaders in this matter?to wit, that it Is their purpose to organize another or third political party in the State, and this charge they have not publicly denied, so ?r as we are informed. Now, as Democrats, we wish it distinctly understood that we have no sympathy whatever with any such purpose. "While we favor prohibition, our cona ? ? - ? ? Carmel May 19 and 20. I Death of Dr. O. R. Jlorten. With regret Ave chronicle the death of Dr. O. K. Horton which took place at his home on Sunday night, May 13, 1888, at half-past eleven o'clock. Dr. Horton was bom January 12, 1834. He was a man of fine sense, a a good physician, and a respected citizen. He was a devoted member of the Baptist Church and had been from the age of twenty-one. He leaves a wife and four children, two by his first marriage and two by his last. The funeral services took place at the Baptist church Monday, May 14, after wnich his remains were laid to rest in the Smyrna cemetery, to await the resurrection dawn. Our sympathise Rro with the bereaved family. A Bright Omen. The General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church now assembled in the city of New York, after a heated discussion, came within two votes of seating women as delegates. This i8 the first step ever taken in this direction by a great Church, and it shows how broad and progressive are becoming the representative men of this great Commonwealth. Thought develops, Christianity broadens, and in this way the civilized movements of the age, are looking to the equality of man and woman, and to a closer proximity of both to the Christ the head and center of all truth. We Give Him Tbree More Yearn. During the last week Mr. R. A. Qhilds, candidate for solicitor, was in town renewing and extending his acquaintance among our citizens. By the way, the Press and Banner reports in its last issue Mr. Childs as only 36 years of age. This is a mistake; he is in his [39th year. The Press amd Banner will please correct this, as it is nothing but fair to this gentleman. Warning: Against Getting Ont Stave Timber. Robert Hill had the misfortune of breaking his leg last week while getting out stave timber for Judge W. N. Ransom. Dr. B. A. Henry was summoned and found the wound not serious as first thought, and he reports his patient doing well. Col. W. C. McGowan. is announced as a candidate for Solicitor. Col. McGowan is a graduate of the University of the South, and also a graduate from the University of Virginia. He is one of the leading members of the Abbeville bar. Well versed in tne law, and ever faithful in the discharge of his duty, the State would find in him a zealous and capable officer. We announce this week Capt. W. D. Mann as a cahdidate for Sheriff*. Capt. Mann is well known to the people of the county. During the war he was a member of McGowan's regiment in company I. He is 45 years old, and is well qualified for the office, having had several years experience in the discharge of the duties appertaining thereto. Mb. Samuel F. Epps is one of the best farmers in the country. He believes in raising his supplies, and always has some to sell. He has the finest Irish potatoes in this section, and as to barley and oats he will be heard from in Abbeville County's Exhibit at the Augusta Exposition. Rev. H. C. Fennel was in town Saturday. Snnshine. There is no better medicine, no greater purifier, no better friend to good health, cleanliness and long life than sunshine. There is an old Spanish Sroverb which says: "Where the sun oes not enter the doctor must," aud ' the truth condensed to that statement is a whole lecture on the health of the home. Sunshine costs nothing, is refreshing, invigorating, life-giving to both sick and well. People have somehow got the idea that nothiug is valuable which does not cost samething, and are too likely to value all blessings by the money value they represent. The great temptation to which we are more or less exposed is that of losing sight of God in the ordinary actions of the day. It is hard to feel that every action of every day is capable of being so done as to advance or hinder our growth in grace. David waked the dawn with praises. Have you rejoiced in the Lord to-day ?j Why should others remember lovingly and appreciatively your efforts in their' behalf when you have been so inaccessible to God's tender mercies and lovintr lrinrinpss? ?? No man can read the New Testament without being struck with its pacific spirit. Tbe visious of the Golden Age would soon be realized did men obey | the New Testament and cease to be the avengers of wrong. "Knowledge," says Bacon, "is power;" but mere knowledge is not power; it is only possibility. Action is power, and its highest manifestation is when directed by knowledge. Did you say you were bored by the sermon last Sabbath ? And did your children tear you? Maybe you will wonder some day why your children do not go to church. Experience is the highest and most satisfactory evidence, "Taste and see that the Lord is good." This taste satisfies bv its sweetness and convinces by its reality. i Courage, brother! do not stumble. Though thy path be dark as night; There's s star to guide the humble: Trust in God and do the right! "War, the greatest curse of mankind, will never cease so long as women and clergymen continue to approve and encourage it." Other sinners serve the devil for pay; but cursers and swearers are volunteers, who get nothing for their pains. Unless we see something beyond the grave worth dying for, there is nothing on this side worth living for. "When the good man dies, the tears are shed which he in life prevented from flowing. We attract hearts by the qualities we display; we retain them by the qualities we possess. The realization of God's presence is the one sovereign remedy against temptation. A man is never so on trial as in the moment of excessive good fortune. The best service we render God is when we make his children happy.
