???????? He Knoweth Our Frame. BY MRS. GEORGE ARCHIBALD. When we are weakly overcome by sin, Our friends are colu, our foes ure swift to blame; * 1 n Yet One there is, wno, Knowing an me Su.... Remembereth our frame. frv-V Wo are but dust, and though we sometimes rise Up to a higher life of love nnd trust. How soon we feel our baser passions tall, And settle back to dust. Of the earth, earthly?yet we venture, Lord, An heirship with thy blessed Son to claim. Thyself hast breathed it with the breath ol life Into the meanest frame. Thyself hast breathed it, and we feel within Plvinest longings even as we stray: So we go halting upward, slipping back, And falling all the way. But higher than the mountains of our guilt, And deeper than our deepest depths o; shame, Is the forgiving tenderness of Him Who knoweth all our frame. Decoration Day. A number of Grand Army po3ts have changed Decoration l)ay to Arbor Day, and trees are planted instead of the scattering of flowers. The discourses of Decoration Daj' this year have generally deprecated war and exalted peace. One ora'.oi chose for his theme, "The Vocation ol the Grand Army of the Republic." After depictiug the efforts of Gen. Grant to promote permanent and universal peace since 3SG6, the orator continued : "Now what I advocate is that the organization in which the immense majority of the survivors of the Federal army are associated, should make a lofinUo hnainpqa of COUOUest tlirOUffl) peace. That the dignity and strength . of your mighty society be used to tone up and to regulate the foreign policy ol our government, so that causes of wat may be foreseen, manfully met, fairly adjusted, and wisely, honorably, pass ecf. The example this would lurmsn toother nations would be most worthy; and while it would be a novel spectacle?soldiers monoeuvring to avoid war?it would be no less powertful in helping all the world on toward that predicted day when 'Nation shall not learn war any more.' " jfc ? A Gentle Boy. ' Be gentle with little Gracie, Charlie," said his mother as she tucked uji the little girl in her carriage, all ready I'oraride. "Be a gentle boy." "O mother, boys are never gentle," answered Charlie. "I don't want tc be called a gentle boy." "Yet a few years from this time ii you should not be called a gentleman vou would feel very badly," answered the mother. "And you can not t>e n gentleman unless you are a gentle boy first; kind and considerate to all around you, gentle to the weak, and courteous to those whom you meet every day. You are forming your character now, my boy, and it will be too late for you to change when you are grown up. You will want to be considered a gentleman then, so try to be a gentle boy now. There is nothing unmanly in being gentle and courteous. Now, thiuk about this while ' -.you are giving (Jracie her ride, and don't think it Is not manly to be gen tie to your little sister." I hope that all the little boys that read this paper will remember that gentlemen are made of gentle boys. ^ Mr. Deems Wasn't Afraid. When Rev. Dr. C. F. Deems, of the Church of the Strangers in New York city, wanted money to pay ofl" a debt on the building he" called on Commodore Vanderbilt. "Are you going to preach what I want to hear?" asked the old man, stermy. "I shall try to preach acceptably," answered the clergyman, in an eva?sive manner. But no sooner had he said (be words than all the manhood within him rose in revolt, and the spirit of John Knox seemed calling him to account. "I shall preacb the Gospel as I believe and understand it, and if you have Hiiy special sins I shall be niosl likely to preach against them." "Humph!" said the Commodore, and ended the interview. The next day he sent Mr. Deems a check for $56,000 for not being afraid . to do his duty.?Detroit Free Press. Snblime Recent Utterances of George Donni?nff jLinut i vtu Mr. Bancroft, the historian, said this in answer to a question of whether his life-work was at an end : "A man who is in sight of 00 can promise the world nothing. I have left mortal affairs behind me. All my thoughts are on eternity. But, however useful my life has been?and, without pride, I think I can say that I have done ray share of good?at least, it has been one of hard work. If, a.? some people say, I am or was a genius, my genius?which, by the way, is a word of vague suggestions?lay wholly in my unremitting industry and application. And I will tell you, though there are many bard workers who are not geniuses, there never was a genius who wasn't a hard worker. Wills, TTon'ts, and Cau'ts. Thorn oro mnnv kimta r?f tinvs jinil girls in the world, but there are three kinds which deserve special mention. They have been called the "Wills," the "Won'ts," and the "C'an't.s." The "Wills" accomplish everything, the "Won'ts" oppose everything, and the "Can'ts" fail in everything. The "Wills" are the ones wanted in the army of the Lord. There is no room for The "Won'ts" or the "Can'ts" in that host.? The Foreign Missionary. Every uttered word involves two responsibilities. Probably more misunderstandings, more wounded feelings, more real injuries, arise from mishearing than from mis-speaking. The better one hears, the better he will be apt to speak. A child who hears correctly may sometimes speak incorrectly; but a child who hears incorrectly may hardly hope to speak correctly. Yet few persons ever think of teaching a child the necessity of right hearing as well as of right speaking. As right hearing is the receiving of the speaker's thought as well as of his words, it follows that accurate words, correct syntax, and good rhetoric, are as essential to true hearing as to true speaking. If an audience lias a right to demand truthful speakiug from the speaker, so ought the speaker to have the same right to demand truthful hearing from the hearer. Richard Jeffries, the English author, Is dead. Among other pathetic incidents connected witn his death, which leaves his family penniless, was the wail of his little girl; "When I find a new flower in the garden," said she, "I can not show it to papa now. Mamma, mamma, I hope Tommy Burrells will not tell everybody I have got no papa now." Men are not always right in the use of their rights. Fasting1. "I used to spend a great deal of time in prayer," wrote President Finney; sometimes, I thought, literally praying'without ceasing.' I also found it very profitable to hold frequent days of private fasting. On those days I would seek to be entirely alone with (Jod, and would generally wander off into the woods, or somewhere else where I could be undisturbed. "Sometimes ] would pursue a wrong course in fasting. I would try to look into my own heart, in the sense of examining my feelings, and would turn my attention particularly to my motives, and the state of my mind. When J pursued this course I found invariably that the day would close without any perceptible advance being made. Turning my attention, as I did,-from the Lord Jesus Christ, and looking into myself, examining my motives and feelings, my feelings all subsided, of course. But whenever I fasted, and let the Spirit take his own ; course with me, and gave himself up to let him lead and instruct me, 1 uniI versallv found it in the highest degree useful/ "I found I could not live without I enjoying the presence of CJod ; and if at any time a cloud came over me, I could* not rest, I could not study, I 11 * frA nntr Hilllir witll Hin coil IU liuuiianu iu auj miiib ...v.. least satisfaction or benefit until the medium was again cleared between my soul and God." ; Enthusiasm. We need more of it, a hundred-fold 1 more than we have. Fnthusiasm in 1 science, in trade, in politics, we have [ plenty of; and all that is done for the 1 advance of business and learning is ! done by enthusiastic men. The word ueeds to be guarded, but the prudent reader knows that enthusiasm is not fanaticism. The grandest subject in all the universe of God, taking full possession of the soul, ought to fill it with intense emotion. This world is 1 to be saved. We ought to be in ear I nest about saving u. me upusucs ! were enthusiastic. The Saviour himself was tilled with zeal. All the best men who have been mighty in pulling down error or building up truth have been enthusiastic. Cod grant that the Church may rise and shake herself from the dust. It is time to be up aud 1 doing. Let us work while it is day. ? , How different is peace from lmppi( ness! Happiness is the result of har, mony between our wants as creatures P and the world without; peace is the harmony between us as spiritual beings anil the Father of our spirits. The one is as changeable as the objects or circumstances on which it relies; the other is as unchangeable as the [ God on whom it eternally rests. We may thus possess real happiness and . real peace; yet either may exist without the other. Nay, more; happiness may be destroyed by God in order that, the blessing of peace may be possess* 1 A ? ^ ft ntoir nounn 6(1 j uui never \> in uc mut u? hj to give happiness. Happiness without peace is temporal, but peace along with happiness, that indeed is eternal. If we work upon marble, it will perish ; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbue them with principles, with the just fear of God and love of our fellow men, we engrave on (hose tablets something that will brighten to all eternity.
