The Tea-party. With acorn cups and saucers, And lovely oak-leaf plates, A paper for a table-cloth, And bits of stone for weights, Because the wind in frolic Might blow it all away, We children had a company In Cedar Woods to-day. We had a leaf of ginger-bread From grandma's best receipt, The tery nicest kind of cake For hungry boys to eat. U'o licwl X nnt Qornh'u r-nnkiM. And biscuits made with yeast, And sandwiches of course beside? _ ? A real royal fees:. We'd asked our cousin Lucy, And Doctor Perkins' Fred, And pretty Lottie Sanderson, And merry Jack and Ned, But sitting by her window. As dull as dull could be, We saw, as to the woods we went, That fretful May McCice. "Poor little lonesome cripple, No wonder she is cross; We all of us might be the same," So pleaded darling Floss. And us we looked and listened, We thought about a way To make a sort of litter And carry little May. You should have seen her wonder. You should have heard her laugh! We had a splendid time with May, A better time by half Than if we'd left ner pining A prisoner by herself, As lonely as a single cup Upon the kitchen shelf. And since we've thought about it, We mean to have a care. And always in our pleasant things Let some forlorn one share; And thus; our mother tells us, We'll keep the Golden Rule, And send the bappy times along, At homo, at play, in school. The Home of Love. Fret! fret! fret! No wonder the work goes wrong; Worry, and fuss, and fume and fret, With never a change in the song. And the husband mutters, with scowling face. As he enters his home and takes his place, "Ah, surely, mine Is a pitiful case, For my wife does nothing but fret." Scold! scold! scold! And the voice Is sharp and thin! The eye is hard and the hand Is quick, And they spare neither kith nor kin While the neighbors mock at the vixen's tongue. And the husbnnd goes where the drunkards throng, And drowns his woes with a glass and song Because his wife is a scold. ? * Smile! smile! smile! For a magic power Is this: What a welcome home to a weary man Are a smile and a wifely kiss! For smiles in a cottage must sunshine make, Asover the kindly Hps they break. Who would not work for the dear sweet haITA Of a wife with asunny smile! Love!love!love! Whatever the trouble be, Remember that love is a brother fond, That is born for adversity; Though heavy the burdens may be to bear, Of poverty, weariest toil, and care, The lowliest home may be bright and fair, If it is but the home of love. Irreverence. It was a common saying of the Rev. Dr. Washburn that unbelief comes oftener from irreverent association than from intellectual doubt. The sneer of a Voltaire has killed more than all his arguments. A jesting tone of talk on religious truths, a habit of reckless criticism on religious things, is to "take the name of God in vain" as the truly vulgar oaths; and, when I hear mm who cans mmseir a ^urisuan, <>i a gentleman, indulging in a burlesque of this sort, I at once recognize some moral defect in him. Intellect without reverence is the head of a man joined to a beast. There are many who think it a proof of wit; but it is the cheapest sort of wit, and shows as much lack of brains as of moral feeling. I would say it with emphasis to each Christian who hears me, never indulge that habit, nor allow sacred things to be jested at without rebuke, but keep them as the miniature of your mother, for no vulgar hands to touch. There is an anecdote of Boyle that he never pronounced the name God without a perceptible pause; and whatever you think, I recognize in it the dictate of a wise heart. We need this reverence in the air of our social life, and its neglect will palsy our piety. Spurgeon's Grandfather. Mr. Spurgeon lately told the following story of his youthful days, when he had to preach in Suffolk. He was on that occasion unpunctunl. He was an hour late; but he could not help the train breaking down. On arriving at the church, he found service going on, and, getting his head in at the door, he saw his grandfather?a patriarch of eighty?preaching. His worthy sire, catching sight of Spurgeon elbowing his way up the aisle, stopped and said, "Here comes my grandchild, Charles; he'll tell you about this free grace of God better than I can." "No," cricd Charles, "you go on, grandfather; that's the grand old Gospel I hear." But it was of no avail. The old man waited until Mr. Spurgeon got iuto the pulpit. "Now," he (mil) "T hnvp irnf tri Innfc vnn nil here, and carry us forward." Mr. Spurgeon did so. When passing to another clause of the' verse, which spoke of human depravity, lie felt his coat-tails pulled, and immediately the grandfather said, "Sit you down, Charles, my boy! I know more of that than you do." So the old man went on. When he finished the head, he said again, "Now. Charles, you go on with the next clause;" which accordingly he did. To the Doubting Oues. When a man has to go over a river, though he ride once and again into the water, and come out, saying, "I l'ear it is too deep for me," yet, considering that there is no other way for him, he resolves to venture. "For," saitli he, "the longer I stay the higher the water will rise, and there is no other way for me. I must go through at the last, why not at the tirtt?" And so he ventures through. Thus it is with you. You say, "Oh, but my heart is uot humbled ! oh, but I am u great sinner! and how can I venture upon Jesus Christ?" Will thy heart be more humbled by keeping from Jesus Christ? and wilt thou be less a sinner by keeping from Him? NoJ certainly; for the longer you stay from Christ the harder it will be to venture on Him at the last. Wherefore, if there be ever u poor, drooping, doubting, fearing, trembling heart reading these words, know that I do here, in the name of the Lord, call out to you, and say: "O soul?man or woman?venture, venture, venture upon Christ now! for you must come to trusting Him at last; and if at last, why not now?" The letter "i" lias not always had its dot. It is not seen, for instance, in the ancient MSB. written in Roman characters. The addition of the dot dates from the adoption of Gothic characters. Two "i's" could then easily be mistaken for a "u," so they were distinguished by accents written from left to right, and this practice extended to "i's" which occurred alone. The accents were diminished to dots as late as the sixteenth century. He that is little in his own eyes will not be troubled to be little in the eyes of others. No nation has yet attained such a <! height of grandeur as will attach to ^ that one which shall be the first to pro- . pose and carry out a plan for the aboli- J tion of war. The time is coming c when that nation shall be esteemed 3 I the most glorious which has daied to a go forth as the pioneer of the path of universal peace. It will receive the p plaudits of men aud angels, and its r name will be repeated with joy and ? gratitude by coming generations. To t have been the first to propose and effectually carry out a scheme for staying the'effusions of human blood will be a far liicrher honor to any land than to have discovered a continent, or made the lightning subservient to human agency. Upon such a nation will be breathed the heavenly benediction, 'Blessed are the peacemakers, for | they shall be called the children of I God."?Joseph A. Collier. I "Poor Jack" was one of God's simple oues, whose sole knowledge was the saving truth of Christ. This is his experience. He says : "When I stand before God, and he opens a great book where all Jack's sins were written down, He looks all over the page, and ( then He looks at Jack, and He says, a 'No, nothing ; nothing here !' What! " Jack never sins? O, yes; very, very ti much sin. But long ago, wheu poor g Jack prayed to the Lord Jesus, He 1 opened this book of Jack's sins, and p He drew His pierced hand, that pood red hand, over the page, and now God sees no sin against Jack, only the blood of the Lord Jesus!" "Thou dying Lamb! Thy precious blood Shall never lose Its power. Till all the ransomed Church of God p 1 Are saved, to sin no more." j Why They Can't See It ? In certain I sections where cattle are kept in large numbers a device has been put into operation by which the motion of an animal in passing on a raised platform will cause the water to rise in the r trough. If the animal could see down i; into the trough from the outside he I would see that there was no water in }] it and would go away. But when he <] goes up on the platform his weight ii pumps up the pure, refreshing water. ^ One can imagine Darwin or Spencer ,s rising up to peer into the trough of religious life, without ascending the platform, and then going away to tell their followers that their was "nothing in it. "My grace is sufficient for thee." " Not only, then, strength not commn- * ? "? ' ' - - ? n-- 1?f 1 L ~ _ uicatea uum actually neeueu, uui us much communicated as is needful.
