The School of Sorrow. I sat in the school of sorrow; The Master was touching there; Hut my eyes were dim with weeping, Ami my heart was full of care. Ins tend of looking upward. And seeing his face divine. So full of thetenderest pitv For weary hearts like mine. I only thought of the burden, The cross before me luy; So hard, and so heavy to carry. That it darkened the light of day. At last in my heavy sorrow, I looked from the cross above, And I saw the Master watching With a glance of tender love. He turned to the cross bpforo me, And I thought I heard him say, "My child, thou must bear thy burden. And learn thy task to-day." So I stooped to that, weary sorrow: One look at that face divine Had given me power to trust him. And say, "Thy will, not mine!" A Troubled Soul. Dear Dr. Fitzgerald I am in trouble, ami feel that I must unburden my heart t<? some one. I turn to you, persuaded that you sympathize with those in distress, and especially with all who are pressed under such burdens as lie upon me. And yet 1 do ...v* if.mn. iii.it von r>nn rrivp mo relief: liwi ninin umv j?'?? v.,.. n. . , while to pour into your ear my distresses may adil to your own, which, I am sure, I would not wantonly increase. But occasionally I have found comfort in the free communications of a tried friendship. In unburdening my heart to a faithful friend I have heen truly disburdened, so far at least that the load which had heen greatly oppressive became then tolerable. Tli is is a long preface; and you may be ready to say, while many importunate claims clamor for attention, "Please ccme to the point." Forgive me, and yet bear with me. 1 must tell my story in my own way. This is what I would say: I am greatly troubled on account of the Church. Ii may seem singular to confess it, and it may tell of something wrong in me, but I am much more concerncd about the Church than for (he unsaved who do not profess to lore the Lord Jesus. But all this is so general in form that you will scarcely know what 1 mean. If I can do so I will give some of the particulars which occasion my distress. I lie Cllliruil lUUliyn.-;;^"""/ v>i ii Him I am a member is a large one. Jt is duly organized and, while not what \> called wealthy, has sufficient means to meet all home demands and help no little in general enterprises. But 1 find that many?I was about to say ;i majority?seem to have no true interest in the cause of Christ. If there is an entertaiument or a society-meeting the same evening the praj-er-meeting is held, the preference is given to the former; ami when they chance to at tend the prayer-meeting there is an air of indifference which chills others and discourages our pastor. If they have In view a visit for recreation or pleasure, those of them who have not abundant means begin early to provide for it; and thus putting by something week by week, when the time comes they have the money to meet the expenses. But if called upon to contribute to the cause of God they say, "I have nothing now; perhaps when the time comes I'll give something if 1 have any tiling." I have had to assist many times in the work of making ** * ' x _ 1 1.1 collections?aim worn ji is?juiu muiu have borne disappointment and failure if it had been said, '-I am sorry I cannot aid, but really I am unable;'i but when I have been told, curtly. ''Xo, I'll not give any tilingwhen I have been treated rudely, as if I were a boggar soliciting alms for my own relief. () then, Doctor, it is hard to bear. Many of our people provide for their own wants and pleasures, but provide nothing for the cause of our Redeemer. Indeed, I cannot see that they are rich toward God. This also is true: Many membersof our Church pay fo: the pastor's support, if they like tin man ; but if they do not like him their payments are withheld. They receive the preacher cordially if they like tIk man; but they never seem to receive him as (bid's ambassador; it is the person they consider, and notthe messenger. The preacher who served us not long sime was a gentle, courteous, spiritual, faithful man. He was also a man with a clear view of his duty, with strong convictions that he must perform it without partiality, and with the courage to fulfil all that he thought he ought to do. So he went straight forward, and soon found some ancient evils which had been so loiiir connived jit Hint l?v mmiv 11 lev wore niiietlv ae-1 cepted .isprescriptive rights! Gently, but firmly, he undertook 11?c removal of fhese evils. He never uttered ;i harsh word, treated all with due respect, appealed to the Discipline which imposed the obligation upon him to do what he was doing and t<? vindicate the course lie took. All was of no avail. They opposed him :it every stage of his work ; spoke evil of him into every ear that would listen ; deprecated his ministry; withdrew their contributions for his support; expressed the hope that there would bo a heavy deficiency ; as far as possible organized a party in the church, and with a persistence rarely equalled sought by all means to bring him into discredit and have him removed from the pastorate of the church. In this particular case the faction was a minority; and God honored his faithful servant with congregations greatly innrejispfl in numbers, with n revival in which more than a hundred were brought into the Church, with such increase in the Sunday-school that the place became too strait for it, and with such comfortable maintenance and such general financial success that the a ersaries were at a loss to explain the facts without admitting that the seal of divine approval had been impressed upon his servant. I find tins also is true: Many will aid in (.'hurch-work only when their leadership is recognized ; but even respectful dissent from their opinions is not tolerated for a moment. Some keep aloof because not appointed to official position, and others become offended if, having held ollicc, they do not happen to he rechosen as theirown successors. I become heart-sick, Doc lor, when I see and think of those things, and of many other evils which 1 may not tax you to hear. To me it seems that when there is full surrender to Christ, petty personal considerations are no longer controlling. The true Christian will take any place where he can best serve His Master, and in ail tilings will he moved by high, religious principle, and never by a degrading prejudice. I fear you will think me very wrong when I profess to see so mut-h that is _ . il - f not 4'n.A wrong in uuiei>; ;niu a uw m>i un that I "come far short of my duty." lint in all that l have written I believe my aim lias been to set down naught in malice, or in any other spirit than an earnest desire to secure peace to Jerusalem and prosperity within her palaces. But how is a private letter to accomplish much, or for that matter any thing, in this direction? My answer is this: I thought, Doctor, if your observations in any considerable mens in mina mil rrtiirllf, lilt? H .Minimi iw imiiiv, jvm .u.0..v write something which would contribute to the correction of the evils ami the growth of whatever is lovely and of good report. () would not the Church be a great power for good if only we were all what our Lord would have us to be? I cor.fess to yon that I lie hue which surrounds me seems to be that of the Church at large. Hut surely this cannot be. It will comfort me to learn that I am mistaken, and (hat a local distress is indeed local, not extending beyond the narrow limits with which I am most familiar. Pray for me?pray foi us. I do so earnestly desire to see the day when we shall follow peace with all men and holiness; when we shall add to all other graces temperance and brotherly kindnesses. when the claims of our Lord and Saviour will take precedence of every thing else. Respectfully your friend and sister, Piikrr Hope. June 21, 1887. Weaned From Earth. Everything tliat tends to disenchant the present and to fix our hearts anil hopes upon the better world must have an ennobling influence upon the soul. The more attractive heaven becomes to us the more shall we seek in the present to cultivate the heavenly spirit. To be weaned from earth is one of the means of making u* seek our spiritual food from heaven ; and the trials of earth, transplanting us from place to place and from plan to plan, tend to prepare us for the great transplanting which is to take us from this world altogether and root us in the garden of the Lord above. Sour godliness is not fruit of the love of Christ. Sweetness, gentleness and pity are the qualities with which he endows his disciples. It is imperfect virtue which is sour, severe and implicable. Perfect virtue is meek, affable and compassionate. Itthinksof nothing but doing good, "of bearing one another's burdens." There is no acidity in pure Christ-love. Finish thy work, then sit thro down On some cclostial hill; And of its strength-reviving air Take thou thy fill. Finish thy work, then ?ro in peace, Life's battle fought and won; Hear from the throne the Master's voice, "Well done, well done." Finish thy work, then take thy lmrp, (Jive praise to God above; Sins; a new song of thankful Joy And endless love. Evciy day a little self-denial. The tiling that is difficult to do to-day will be an easy thing to do three hundred and sixty days heuce, if each day it shall have been repeated. What power of self-mastery shall be enjoy who, looking to God for grace, .seeks every day to practice the grace lie prays for. The man that is too good and spiritual for the visible Church is something of a phenomenon?especially to himself. He finds his worthy associates in the man too holy to pray "forgive lis our tresspasses," and the one too sanctified to have to keep the Commandments any longer. Depend upon it, in the midst of all the science about the world and its ways, and all the ignorance of God and His greatness, the man or woman who can say, "Thy will be done," with true heart forgiving us, is nearer the secret of things than the geologist and theologian. If it is not a practicable duty to i>e perfectly holy iti tliIs world, tlien it will follow that thf devil has so completely accomplished his design in corrupting mankind that Jesus Christ is at fault, and has no way to sanctify his people but by taking out of the world. A girl looks prettier in a nice lawn dress than she does rigged out like a show window of a millinery establishment. Rut, then, nine out of ten girls would nitl-er be the "show window." Let not unworthiness scare the children of Clod. Parents love their children and do them good, not because they see that they arc more worthy than others, but because they are their own. The cares, which are the cream of riches, hang often so heavily at the rich man's girdle, that they clog him with weary days and restless nights, when others sleep quietly. Many a man thinks it is principle that keeps him from turning rascal, when it Is only n full stomach, lie grateful and do not mistake potatoes for principle.
