Cluverlus, convicted of the mnrder of Frances . Y Lillian Madison, was hanged In the city Jail > here to-day. As farly i s 9 A. M. people began to gather In tlie vicinity, and hy noon every approach to the Jail was packed with human beings. The housetops nnd hillsides near the Jail from wnlch a slgnt into the Jail yurd could be had wore also crowded. Admission to thMnil was " only had through tickets issued City SefgeantSmith, who. though chary in glWnt them out, admitted over two hundred persons. The prisoner passed a sleepless night, most , of his time being spent with Beverly Crump, one ot his counsel, who has done everything to save or extond his life, and who remained with him until 2 A. M.. and from that boar. until 6 o'clock lie wns engaged In prayer and at intervals In singing hymns. Fromdo'clock until 9 he^lfpt soundly, and then arose and ate at breakfast a.tenderloin beefsteak, mushrooms and an omelet. [ During the morning hours there was-moch , speculation ns to whether the Governor would I further respite him, and that question wns " not finally settled until some time tn tbp at-' ternoon, when Mr. Crump, who had been to siu; the Governor, returned to the Jail and announced that the executive power would not be interposed. Rev. Dr. William E. Hatcher came to tbci ' Jail about 11 o'clock and remained. with thb prisoner to the lust, administering religious consolation to and praying with him. . *' * At noon a suit of new black clothes . WW ' / hroughtto the Jail and the prisoner donnea them. " At two minutes to l o'clock the death procession was formed, consisting of Sergeant Smith, two deputies, Rev. Dr. Hatcher and the prisoner, the latter having his hands tied > in front, and his body from neck to ankles enveloped in an old-fashioned lady's waterproof cloak. From the cell the march progressed ;< along the corridor and down two flights of stairs to the lower court of the Jail, and then into the yard fronting the cells of white prisoners, forty policemen being on duty to keep back the crowd. The prisoner, though thin and pnlo, moved with sieaay steps 10 me scat-. fold, which he ascended in the same quiet manner and stood on the trap. f Sergeant Smith then read the death war-, rant, or a copy of the Judgment of the court. " , which the prisoner listened to with bowed head and apparent closp attention. , When the Sergeant had concluded, he asked the doomed man If he had anything to say, and G'luveriusreplied, "No* sir. nothing at *iall." His voice was scarcely audible. ? Dr. Hatcher then knelt and offered a feeling and fi-rvent prayer, and when he had finished he turned to the prisoner, who said a few words In a low tone, and Dr. Hatcher, turning to the crowd In the yard said: "I am requested by the prisoner to utter one won! for him, and that is that in this moment of death be carries to the grave no feeling of ill will towards any man 011 earth. Dr. Hatcher then left the scaffold." Raisins both hands as he went out, he said the prisoner bad asserted his Innocence to the last. Jnst, before leaving his cell. When Dr. Hatcher had gone, Deputy Sergeant Allen tied the prisoner's knees tightly together, put the rope around his neck and adjusted the black cap and hood. Kverythlng being ready, Sergeant Smith gave the signal, and at eight minntei after 1 o'clock the trap was sprung. A sudden swish nnd the clahg of the tailing trap door, and the ?O next instant the body of Cluverius was at tbe end of the rope, ten feet below where he had bpen standing. The rope, which was mado of parti-colored silk, stretched over a foot, and the toes of the hanged man nearly touched the brick pave* ment beneath. A minute of quiet, and then there was cotii siderable struggling, lasting severat minutes,' together with heavy, stentorious breathing* * * * "* * *' 4 j 4i- uai?v.? hw/vflllaall ktt inUlCilling UlltlUtUtU wua uumg piuuuv?u wj strangulation. After sixteen minutes the physicians pronounced him dead, and twenty mlnntes after/ the trap wiis sprung the body was taken down, placed in a plain wooden coffin and turned over to an undertaker to be prepared, for burial at his former home in King and Queen County. THE STORY OF THE CRIMEi The following is the history of the crimc foif which Cluverius was hanged: On the morning or 14th of March, 1885, Mn L. Hose, keeper of the old city reservoir in the Western part of the city, in makln* his usual round of inspection, discovered the body of a woman in the reservoir. He at once notified the city authorities and the Coroner, who had the ttody taken from the water, when it was seen that It was a young woman about 22 years of aae, and quite good looking. The Coroner, sifter reviewing the remains, pronounced it a case of suicide, aud had the body removed to the morgue at the city alms-house for identification. Peter J. Burton, a reporter on the Richmond , Dispatch, subsequently went to the reservoir ana then to the morgue, and his investigation resulted in the formulation of a mtirder theory upon a chain of circumstantial evidence which drove conviction to many minds. A further examination of the body disclosed IJhfl fact that the unfortunate woman was far advanced in pregnancy. Turing two days many people saw the body, and it was finally recognized by two young ladies Cthe Misses Dun* stan) as a friend of theirs, Miss Fannie Lillian Madison of King and Queen County, but who had for some time pa?-t been teaching schoolIn Rath County. The Coroner s Inquest resulted in a verdietot probable murder. Detectives and police were set to work, and In a short time brought to light circumstances which add?d strength to the murder theory, A woman who had registered atthe Americati Hotel on the 13th of .March, under the namd if "Miss F. L. Merton," was missing from the hotel, and her disappearance and the finding if the body about the same time furnished ? fatal clue, but for which the murderer might never have been known. While the so-called Miss Merton was at the hotel she wrote and received several notes, but one directed by ler whs never delivered, and after her departire from the hotel it was torn to pieces by the :Ierk and cast into a waste basket. Scraps of iliis note and envelope were subsequently jrought to light, and when pasted together wed as one of the principal links In the bain which convicted the murderer, it being tddressed to "T. J. Cluverius." Further Injuiry developed the /act that the man was a ,'onng lawyer of King and Queen County, < ii r\C tho donPASPfl. The discovery of this note led to the -arrest >f riuveiln?, who was known to have been n Richmond ou the 13th of March. He Vfas bund at the residence of hi" aunt, Mrs. Tuntall. in King and Queen County, and brought o this city. He waived a preliminary examination and vas sent to the grand Jury of the Hustings .'ourt. He was indicted in a preliminary way or murder, and bis trial began at the May crm of court and continued for twenty-eight lays. Owing to the difficulty in obtaining ompetent Jurors In Richmond, It was found lecessary to draw talesmen from Alexandria, ,nd n Jury was finally Impaneled with seven tichmonders and five Alexandrians compos* ng it. The prisoner pleaded not guilty and lie trial proceeded. Nearly :>0o witnesses were examined, andtop by step the evidence fixed upon the prlsner the brand of seducer and murderer; and tiien the able counsel on both sides had conluded their efforts for and against the accusd. the jury, after but a few moments' considration, rendered a verdict of murder in the irst degree. The prisoner throughout the trial "was cool nd undaunted, and his self-possession was a [*uitful theme tor comment. His counsel exepted at every possible point in the evidence, nd a<ked for a new trial, which was refused, nd C'luverius was seutenced to bo banged on be 20th of November, 11*85 An appeal was then fatten to the Supreme lourt of the State, which, however, availed lie prisoner nothing but a stay of execution ?r over a year, as the court, with but one disputing voice.affirmed the judgment of the nver court. ('luverius was then re-sentenced to be hangr! I lecember 10, IS"*!}. The last resort, the liief Kxecutive, was finally applied to for anion or a commutation of the sentence to fe imprisonment; but the Governor, after ivilli? the rase the most considerate atten on, could find no reason for interfering with lie mandate of tl*e courts. Ho. however, resitcit tin-condemned until to-day. Mr. \\*. S. I.igon, a prominent merchant of .mlcrson, and who was one of the excursion- > >ts to Augusta, died suddenly of heart discabd riduy morning in that city.
