The Press and Banner Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1886. j Ciouc Into the Original Poetry linsi- i news. Our friend, the Florence Time*, had an origi-! nal piece of poetry in its last issue from an nfloiiymous correspondent, which is worthy of a patent. H e nave nieopporuiniy mgi-i cveii with the Tiinr.i. A learned gentleman of j this bounty lias offered to write three different series ol articles for the Press and Banner, 011 as riiany different- subjects. : The first of these articles is 011 "Earthquake*." The author ha8 studied the ! subject and knows all about them. He can tell their causes, and when they may be ex-; pected to occilr asain. This will be extremely t valuable information for the Xtws and Cuu rier. The second series of articles Is on "Evolution." The writer of these pieces under-, stands this question tlmrouuhly. The recent church trouble having directed his attention to the matter, he has given the subject such : thought as will enable him to make il appear 1 perfectly clear that tlie doctrine of Evolution is the correct and only plan of our existence. | This will be gratifying intelligence for Dr. i Woodrow. The tliird and last series of the learn-1 ed writer's articles will be "On Political i Economy." Having mastered the subject' thoroughly these articles will 110 doubt be, highly etttertainlag to our friend; the Columbia Register. Gettlu;; it Down Fines If you arc in search of tlie cheek ot a Govern me.nt mule, we would commend to your; attention the average advertising agent. In! the tirst place, let it not be forgotten that they seldom or never otter Hie country printer a price at which they can alfort to work. When they offer Sl.tfl for a titteen dollar advertisement they always add : ".Less the agent's usual commission of twenty-five per cent.'' Now they want us to make out an exact, statement of the number of papers which we have Issued for each week in the lust year. Then they would like for us logo before a notary public, and make affldavit to the correctness of the report. As we ao not solicit, and, ns a rule, we do not accept the advertisements which Jthcy i ? end us, we care nothing at all about, the ratI mis which thev may dive to the Press and I Banner. If they send a prepaid envelope we j may answer them, but if they neglect this Important feature, the correspondence is certainly at an end with their tirst letter. I'nion Ucctinp. J Every movement was in exact, time, mid if a I mistake was made it must be very small unci I very "ledumten!," but the judges knew their business,Miid could detect errors that tic incx-1 \ pei ienced eye failed to see, and at Hie commands "order arms," "in place rest," a dead | silence awaited the decision. The inexorable :" decision finally came and out stepped v IVIvate 1). W. Kellar, Private It. L. Mabry, .a l'rivate J. L. Perrin. i . ! i THE FIFTH KOUXD?THE VICTOKY. And now bcholtl the Inst analysis! The fl- n nul tug of war! There only remain standing j iSChjcant. J. A. Harris, ! n Private W. A. Lyon. 1 ? A long, hard-bout in which the men moved as one machine; the final "order"'given, and then?"the battle's e'er?the victory's won" a and this whole company give a shout, of praise to Sergeant Harris who buars oil the v honors. ! n The contest from first, to la?t was pond, nnd 11 though Sergeant Harris was the lucky man, Private Lyon was "right behind liim"' and r proved a foeman lu every respect, well wor-j thy the Sergeant's steel. L The spirit shown by the entire company,'J we think, was very commendable. To both I Private Calvert and ^Sergeant Harris they N gave a hearty, generous sluilit of praise, unmixed w til tile slightest feeling of envy or , dissatisfaction. The Judges, ('apt. Tat rick of the Greenville' Guards and Lieut. Alston, Of the Uichlandj} Volunteers, gave entire satisfaction by their j1 tail*, impartial Judgment of the drill. After the drill came t THE PKESENTATIOX OF TIIE I>Rt2KS. I Tlic officers' prize, given hy tlio privatCR It nml won by First Lieutenant A. \V\ Smith* ji was presented by W.C. Hcnct. Ksq., In a I'ont | s and iiappy speech. After some kind worus ' t for the company and its officers, 31 r. lienctlt argued that apart from the phasant social ji features of Mich an orgranlzatlon, it was of great benefit, to the conittiUnity; nntl he I a doubtctl the patriotism of any man who I wished to trown down the military ; and for himself, he was glad and willing to vlve the 1 company all the aid and support he could. In presenting the prize, which was a com- a plcte gentleman's dressing case, containing, brush, razor, strap. <Ce., he hoped the young ^ soldier when called into act tve service would "brush" his enemies from the lace of the earth : that his sword would be as bright ant'! i s keen as the "razor" he held In his hand, and he concluded by hoping tne gallant young 1 officer would never lie "strapped." The nl"dals Were delivered by Gen. M. L. | j P.onham, Jr., who made an earnest appeal for i the militia of tlie State. He said the military i. of the State was in a fairly good condition, M and if the Legislature would but continue the small appropriation, he thought lie could r raise the standard all over the State. Gen. Bon ha m is an ex-Captain of the Abbeville! j liifllesand as he rose his old command greet- j s ed him with a round of lusty cheers The cups for shooting were presented by Col. H. T. Ward law. Tn?? Colonel is generally . 11 happy in his style, but upoh this occasion he ! v was inimitable. He said he knew Corporal j Dui're who Is an unmarried man, coulu nev- (h er "support" arms as Sergeant Harris docs, ;d who is a married man with a fine boy; but j I! he hoped that when .Mr. DnPre "presented" arms to his lady love he would not have to ] ? obey the command, "to the rear, march." ;J In delivering the cups the Colonel thought j tlie.v may possibly "leak" and advised aspeedy | test, but warned them not to "punch" too big ;" a hole, as such might bring on the hic-"cups. ! t The Colonel brought down the house and was most haDD.v in his hits. I n THE CONCLUSION OF TUE W1IOLK MATTEIt. 6 This ended the pleasant evening. The Ah- ti beville Hiflcs are in tine condition. They ?re a.i ornament to the town smd deserve the aid and support of every citizen. They are Sj about to order a new regulation unilorni, Dnd 1 will give a military hop as Boon as they ar- 11 rive. Let us support our company. Captain McGowan lias every reason to bo k proud of the conduct t>f the Abbeville 1(1 tics | fast Thursday night at the Plume Drill. Kv-i j; orv membe r of I lie company seemed to be perfect in the drill, and persons In the audi-!., once were unable In a majority of Instances I ' to discover the reasons which Induccd tho committee to stand aside those who were "V ruled out at the different drills. For the Dciuflt of those who, like ourot-If, saw no do- j j, feet in many of those who were rnled ottt, we j will say that some of tire best drilled men In ! v I he company, lost tneir positions because ofi ' the crape which they wore on their left arms | in respect, to the memory of the deceased Ad-1 si jutant General. A, M. Manigault. It occurred n in this way: In coming from "support amis" j d to "ca' ry arms" the hammer of the gun in several instances caught in tho crape", throw-1 j. inn the sun out of position. It was for this! rea-'rti that Sergeant It. s. Link and Corporal ? A.M. I >u I're were ruled out. Others were j ** knocked out because of some dilliculty In getting their bayonets in the scabbards. llut t g a majority of them were knocked out bc-Jw cause of the position of their feet, at some | time in the drill, and because they allowed i j their guns to bounce on the tloor at "order arms."
