J- . The Press and Banner * -Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1886. Itcniovluff the Cause. Some member of Mr. \V. D Mann's family 1ms been sick Jor a greater part of ibis year, and one of iii.s sons i< now sick of typhoid fever. He II ves in the jail, ami is the keeper of that institution. The jail is of brick. The nrst noor is .st-vt-rui n-vi, >u, ? .. the walls below ilie rtoor were built up without sufficient ventilation, nnd It wa<determined alew days ago to fiud the cause of ?o much sickness. Openings in the wall have been made and the air below the rtoor Is Mild to be exceedingly foul. The shavings which were left there when the house was built thirty years ago wer>; in a state of dec imposition, water had run under |.md dampened everything, and irom which lact resulted the cause of so much sickness. Ventlllation holes hns been opened, and the trash from below t ie rtoor is being removed, and it is hope Mr Mann's family may be restored to health. It there are other persons with insufficient ventillation they may take the hint, and examine their premises. All persons building new houses should build them high from the ground.and should by all means avoid building too near to the ground. TUe rubbish and decomposed matter which Was under the jail made many wagon loads und was exceedingly otfencive to the olfactory nerves. Worthy nnd Prosperous Yonny Men. We had a call last Monday morning from Mr J Samuel Gilmer, of liradley. It always affords us pleacurc to note the return of any Abbeville young man, but more especially is It nleasant when we know that they have done well In their new homes. Mr. Gilmer is a man of excellent business habits and is succeeding well. He is now the senior member of the tirm of J. S. Gilmer & Co., dealers in drugs, confections nnd fancy goods at Brad ley, with good prospects for the future. Several of our Abbeville young men are at Ilradloy, und are doing their old town honor In the new town. Mr. Joel C. Weir is one of the most reliable and pleasant merchants with whom to deal, and Mr. John B. Agnew is doing well and-rising in the carriage business. Unt il recently Mr. John IJ.
