Somo industrious calculator has discovered I that there are incident, or at least possible, ! to human life no less than 2,400 distinct dis- , orders with which the physician must con- j tend. In tho midst of such an array of enemies nature contends. "Nature," says a French philosopher, "is fighting with disease; a blind man armed with a club?that is, tho physician?comes to settlo tho difference. Ho iirst tries to make peace, and when he cannot do this he Kfts his club and strikes at random. If ho strikes tho disease he kills it; if ho strikes nature he kills tho patient." That may bo an uncertain sort of philosophy, but it is borno out by Napoleon, who onco said to one of his court physicians: "Believe me, we had better leavo off these remedies. Life is a fortress that neither you nor I know anything about. Why throw obstacles in the way of its defence i Its own means are superior to all the apparatus of your laboratories. Medicine is a collection of uncertain prescriptions, the results of which, taken collectively, are inorc fatal than useful to mankind." MEDICAL BOOKS AXD PRESCRIPTIONS. Sir Thomas Browne spends considerable time in disproving a common error of his time: that healing and the mysteries of medicine rn'ro a gift bestowed with coronation upon royalty. This idea seems to have been very generally held. In 1(510 a book was published entitled, ''The Queenes Closet Opened: or divers things necessary to bo knowne collected out of sundry books, oldo written, and now brote into one order. The several things herein contained may be seen in the bookes and tables followinge, written in tho yearo of our Lorde God, 1010." Tho titles of tho books were: "First. A coppyo of all such medicines wherewith ye noblo Countesse of Oxenforde, most charitable. in her owne persone, did mayne greate unci notable cures upon poor neighbours." The second book is entitled: "Here beginneth ntruecoppyo of such medicines wherewith Histrcss Johan Ounstead, daughter unto the worshipfulo Mr. John Ounstea<l, alderman of London, hath cured many forlorno and deadlie diseases." Asamplo of the prescriptions is as follows: "To cure freckles, take the bloude of a hare, annoynte them with it, and it will doo them away." And another: "For forgetting and weakeninge of the understanding. If the hearte, eye, or brayno of a black plover be hanged about a man's neck, it is profitable agaynsto forgetfullnesso and sharpcth man's understandings." The book also contains a score of prescriptions against lovesickness, and innumerable philters and love charms. In the year 177G a doctor traveled over Germany who called himself tho "Rainwater Doctor." His remedy for all diseases was this ono cure, either applied or taken inwardly. Wonderful cures wero wrought, wo are told, and multitudes flocked after him to be healed. A GAMBLER TURJfED QUACK. Sanders has a storj' of a most notorious gambler of Paris named Mantacinni, who, having squandered all his fortune, sought to retrieve his losses by turning quack. He started hi? carriage, and made tours of tho country, pompously professing to effect cures of nil diseases with a single touch, or even a look. Failing in this he essayed a bolder claim, that of raising the dead at will To removo all doubt ho announced that in a certain city ho would in fifteen days go to tbe churchyard and call to life all tho dead, though they had been buried for years. This, of course, excited a general murmur against him, but he at once went to tho magistrate and asked to be put under a strict guard and held, to prevent his escape until he had made good his claim. This inspired tho greatest confidence, and tho wbolo city came to consult the mighty savant and to buy his eau de vie. His consultations wero numerous, and ho received tremendous foes. At length, as tho day drew near, his confederate, who was attired as his valet, expressed his fear, and suggested an attempt at escapo. The "doctor" shrugged his shoulders and said: "You do not know mankind?wait." Scarcely had ho spoken when a servant brought a letter from n prominent citizen saying: "Sir, the great operation you arc about lo perform has broken my rest and mado my life a burden. I have a wife buried for some years, who was a furj% and I m unhappy enough in her memory without her resurrection. In tho name of heaven, do not make the experiment, which I have every reason to believe will bo a succcss. I will give you fifty louis if you will keep your secret to yourself." Soon after two dashing beaux arrived, who besought him to desist. Their father had been tho greatest miser in tho city, and if he were to return they would bo reduced from the swell of their aCluenco to paupery. They offered him a fee of 100 louis, but the doctor Itfa in Hniihffnl rnmnlinnrft. Tin. mediately came a young widow on the eve of matrimony, who threw herself at the feet of tho quack, and with sobs besought him to desist. From morning until night fees poured in, and letters and messengers besought him to desist. The whole city was in confusion, so that the mayor eamo and said: "Sir, 1 Lavo not tho least doubt, from my experience of your rare and wonderful talents, that you I will accomplish easily the resurrection in our j churchyard tho day after to-morrow, according to your promise. Cut, I pray you, see how our whole city is in confusion. Your experiment must prove a dreadful revolution iu every family. I entreat you, therefore, not to attempt it, but go your way and restore tranquility to the city. In justice, however to your rare talents, I shall give you a 1 parchment, under the seal of tho city, testify- ! i:ig tbat you can raise the dead, and that it j was our own fault that we were not 03*0 wit- i licsscs of your power." A reporter, who oliserved tho solemn way in which they skipped, waited in tho line, and when ho finally got up to tho telescope and looked in saw, in large characters, these j words: "Buy Blowhard's soap.
