In a quiet and unostentatious way the poopie of Abbeville have had a delightful Christmas. Nearly everybody hnd a good dinner to which friends were Invited, and several so<-l?l and dancing parties have been given at different houses, but the crownlns entertainment ot theChrlstmas holidays was the "Holiday Ball of the Abbeville Club," which came off on Motxlay night in the splendid apartments of the new hotel. Injc Influence Vpon Other Young: Men? This community was shocked and a doom chsi over the Christmas festivities by the shooting of Mr. Arthur M. Hetiedict by Mr. John O. Ferguson, which sad event occurred in ihe store of Mr. Charles Aucrhitch In Abbejville, jit hnlf-pnst one o'clock, Wednesday, December :M, l-S>'4. The killing wns done with what is called it "bull do^" pistol, of 38 calibre, ihe hall breaking the sixth rib and penetrating the left lun:; immediately bi low the heart. Death resulted In about flfte?-u minutes, though thedeccased nccome unconscious within an exceeding short time. It was the day iie.'ore Christmas and the streets ?nd stores were crowded with people who were buying needed goods or were In search for suitable gifts to bestow upon loved ores, on the anniversary of the birth of the i Great Lover of mankind, and up to the time ! of t he shooting it was reasonable to suppose that all mankind were at pcacc with the world. Nothing had occurred to mar the pleasure of the day. Other witnesses who were equally as near and had an equal opportunity to hear, testify that they heard no words between them, lieyond report of the atlalr we know nothing however, and speak only from hearsay. It is paid that Mr. Ferguson and Mr. Benediet had had. about n week be'ore thekllllng. a dispuic about the pay for a load of wood, which Mr. Ferguson had sold to Mr. Benedict for seventy-five eeuts. At this difficulty Mr. Benedict claimed that Mr. Auerbach had cbaryed him with the amount and that It was a matter now between Mr. Auerbach. his employer, and Mr. Ferguson. We trust that He who doetli all thincs well will fnrclve the brother, who was carried oir so suddenly that he had not the opportunity of making even the slightest preparation for his departure or of uttering the shortest prayer lor mercy. Mr. Auerbnch took his body aboard the train on Christmas morning, and quite a number of persons, as a mark of respect to the deceased, went to the railroad depot to witness the departure of his remains, which were taken to Columbia, and deposited In the Jewish burial ground of that city. For further particular of the fatal deed .attention is directed to the evidence us given at the Coroner's Inquest over the dead hody, which may be found elsewhere In the Press and liannt-r. Mr. Arthur M. Benedict, the deceasod, was about twenty-seven years of age, n? unmarried man, a stranger In a strange land. He was a native of Austria hut had been living in Abbeville some four or five years, during which time he had saved some money, and at the time of his death was perfecting arrangements by which he could open a store on his own account in Greenville, Mississippi, about the first of next February. Ho had made good friends among our own people. Retiring and Inotlei-Hlve In tils manners.courteous and warm-hearted in bis seniiiuents, bis death Is much regretted. Mr. John C. Ferguson is about twenty-four years of age, the ton or Mr. A. J. Ferguson. a well-known farmer of considerable property, living B<>nie four miles west of Abbeville village. Two or three years ago he was married to a daughter of Mr. W. II. Brooks,a wealthy and much re-pect.-d citizen of this village. After tils marriage he settled on a tract of laud which bis lather bought at the eRtatc mile of T. C. Perrin, and built a house on It, with every prospect of a lair success?his greatest diaw bark being his love of wblskcv. The prisoner Is on the tirst floor of the Jail? being the second story of the building?occupying the second cell on the east side or the house. He has a coinforlahle bed. two or three chairs, and other little conveniences which add to bis comfort. He receives the newspapers, and whiles away the ti e in reading them, when his wife Is not with him, though she stays in the cell with biiu much of the lime. A stove is placed In the corridor rear the bars or the cell and all necessary warmth Is kept up. He makes no complaint as to the treatment which he has received, but seems grateful to Mr. Dul're for kindness. The case against Mr. Ferguson will come up for trial during the February Term of the Court of General Sessions, at Abbeville, but it Is reported that the deieudant will make a motion to have the trial postponed until the next term of the Court. 'I he irlal will command the most ablo counsel on both sides. Cnpt. M. L. Bonham and Mr. V.'. C. McGowan will assist the able and ! efllcU nt State Solicitor, Col. J. L. Orr. The defendant has employed Mr. W.C. Benet, Mr. I.. W. Smith and Colonel E. B. Gary. The killing was committed In the presence of a large number of witnesses, and it Is fair to presume that all the facts will bo brought out on the trial. The parties areall white?no race prel U'llce in it, unless it shall be that there is a prejudice against one who lins committed the sin of being born a fnroitsner. The eyes of the country will therefore be upou (he Jury, anil their act u ill be noted. Without knowing the fact, It is said, that the pica of insanity will be made In behaif of Mr. Ferguson. In the first place, it isa matter which concerns the public, and the public have a right t?? know the facts. It the next place, it is but Just 10 the living and to the dead that the facts should be known. For this tca*on and for the rea>>on that the Courts will investigate this matter, we have etideavred to makca fair and impartial statement of facts, without any desire to prejudice tiie pi bile opinion lor or against the prisoner. In meditating on this scene ol blood, whlen has saddened so many hearts at home and abroad, would it not bo well for each and all or us to Inquire how much of this blood may he properly chargeable to us Individually? It might be well inr us to inquire to what, extent we are Indl vldually to blame for this homicide, and it might l>e well lor us to ask ourselves, If we,as a people, ate not more to blame than the misguided neighbor who has slain the Jew and the stranger. Il we as citizens, witnesses, jurors, and court ollleors, as a whole, had done our full duty In the years that are past, would this homicide have been a probability? If we had given moral support to the law against carrying concealed weapons, it is not possible that Ferguson could havesluln Benedict. Iftno>e I who knew that Ferguson was carrying that j pistol had used proper effort to prevent it, I Benedict would have been n live man to-day, and Feignson wou'd have been happy with | his family, and us hopeful us the best of ourj youths. The courts being the exponent, not only of; the law, but ul?o of public opinion, has that [ tribunal and that public opinion, upheld the! sacridness of human life, and visited Just punishment to those who would deprive the I citizen of his richest estate?
