r-r ' f V m " t he Press and Banner By Huffli Wilson. . . i *- . Wednesday, Sept. 24,1884. Jt Our Crops. The corn crop is short in every section. The oat crop is about exhausted, and the price for whatever seed remains on hand has been run up to about fifty cents i a bushel for good quality, Tho wheat crop was good, but it has alinrtst disappeared. Many farmers have been living on it since harvest, and many others were coinpellod to sell a portion of their crop to raise a little inon or U> 3i:uurt? umivu au jpuua. Considerable quantities of land has been sown in oats, ior a new crop, b*U in tuany instances tlio land lias been loo dry to plow, and no has been planted. 1 he turnip crop is almost a failure so far, but as it is not too late to sow, wo Lope that a good crop may yet be had. The grass crop is remarkably tine in aoino sections, and in favored localities the greatest quantities of hay has been saved. This was the more necessary because of the loss of the corn crop in many instances. The cotton crop in some sections of the county is as tine as favoring rains, gener-; alivesunshineand fertile lands can make, but this is sadly in contrast with the CrOps in other sections. The crop:*, according to locality and rainfall, varies all tlio way from first-class down to the i fields in wnicn H would noi pay 10 attempt to gather the scattering bolls; It will be remembered that last year our crops were exceeding short, yet in some localities a much smaller crop of j cotton will bo gathered. Our farmers iu many instances^ by | strict economy, will be able to payout,; but there are some whom we presume ( to bo hopelessly involved, and whose j failure will to some extent inconvenience the merchants, who are as a rule per-' fectly solvent and enjoy a credit in the markets beyond their desiies to use. The merchants are hopeful of an active business from the fact that the cotton will ] bring ready money, which will go to; make purchases and to pay present indebtedness. After the present indebted ness h;is beei. paid and the winter sup> plies laid in, the money will be nearly i exhausted, and the merchant will again I bo expected to "carry" the farmers more j laruelv than this voar?this being due to j the fact that the oat ami wheat crop is about exhausted, ami the corn crop will not be mare than a traction of a good crop. Our citizens should exercise the greatest economy, and take such steps as will reduce all unnecessary expenses. Good pasture fences and good milk cows are 01 inconceivable value. Milk contains everything necessary to sustain life. No luxury itf equal to that of good milk. % Another Printing: Office in Abbeville. The press and types of the Saluda Argus, Greenwood, are being removed to Abbeville and placed in the store room on the Public Square, which has been re cently occupied by Mr. Uruce as a siioe shop. We understand tliat tho press, type, nnd goodwill of tho Argiut office lias been transferred to a parly of gentlemen who will edit arid publish the paper at thin place under a new namd. Without knowing the style of the firm or the order in which tho uames will ippear, we learn that Messrs. M. L. Bnnn&m, Thos. P. Cothran, and Jatnos S. Perrin will conduct the new paper. New Goods. All of our merchant have returned from their pilgrimage to the great Northern markets where they have bought large slocks of the choicest and most attractive goods that have ever been brought t<> this village.
