The Press and Banner. Greenwood Department, EDITED BY W. K. IILAKE. Wednesday, March 19, 1884 Y Introductory. In assuming control of (ho "Greenwood department" of the 1'rc.ss <tml /l-tnjirr, I am reminded of the eminent writers, whom I succeed as Associate Editor. I cannot 1 ope to equal a Lee, a lionet, a \Vardhv.. or a Davis, whose! ability has conspired to make the J'rr.s/t. (l)nl Manner second to no weekly paper; in the State?a power in the land. The object of this arrangement on the; /?r Wo rtntn.-ruMOtlir ni'Ml >l'l ('tOI*. is t(> , give to the readers of the IVr.t.* mu! JUtiiticr a more minute ami speedy report of current events from every part of Hie county, ami to the people of this prosperous ami growitiff section the advantages of a county paper, with a department devoted to their own views and interest; thus couihiniiij; two pipers in one. It is not at all probable that the re-j turns will equal the outlay incurred by the proprietor, for this effort on his part, j to meet the demands of this people; he^ must rely therefore, to a great extent,) simply on their recognition of his efforts in their behalf, as his onlv reward ; such i i public spirit deserves to be commended.; While this is true and enuring to the j special benefit of this section, it does not relieve this community from the duty of maintaining and supporting their own j paper. JLei mem muiki mini) u_y nunc who are expending their time and means in efforts to build up their local interests, i Justice, as well as interest, demands it. [ The Press and Jt inner already reaches almost every family in this section of the; county; the purpose of its proprietor is therefore, not aggressive, but only to, , make it as interesting as possible to its own readers. \V. K. HLAKK. Farmers and Foreign Money Lenders. A farmer of this community informs lis that he applied to an agent of a Foreign Money Loaning Association for the loan of a few hunored dollars--, when he ascertained that he would be required to execute a mnrtgttgo on unencumbered rea>! estate of value of at least three times the ' nmountof money desired; that the money was to betaken for the full term of live years, and not one cent could he paid till the expiration of that time; that adis-i count of 20 per cent, would be made from the amount for the benefit of the company, then 10 per cent, lor the agent, and an j annual rate of 8 per cent, from the time of obtaining the money till it is paid, amounting in the aggregate to .'58 per cent, for the first year, and not much le<s f< r each succeeding one. Whether our informant comctly understood tho terms: or not we cannot say; but if he did, or is: even half correct it is a scheme which will as effectually and certainly wrest the land from its owner as if he had made a formal sale and transfer of it in the first j inutonpp V\irtn<>i4M cannot borrow money at heavy rates of interest, and should j look with suspicious scrutiny on all such schemes purporting to he for their relief | and benefit. Southern lands are begin-i ning to attract the attention of capitalists, i as manufactories multiply in the South, I ^ and we may expect all imaginable?, ^ schemes Jo be devised to circumvent the! unsuspecting landholder, and wrest from j him, before he is aware of it, his South-'1 em heritage at a nominal price. We advise our people to sell at a fair price such ! land as they can spare, rather than borrow i money at a heavy rate of interest with!I the hope of obtaining relief from peeuni-! ary pressure: They will nevor do it; ' but only grow from bad to worse. Rail road Accom mod at Ion. It is a very great accommodation to the 1 people at Abbeville and to those within reach of Hodges, to have two trains a day, and we hope it is not accompanied with any pecuniary loss to the Columbia and Greenville Railroad Company, If Col. j Haskel could be induced to extend the; accommodation a little further, and make] it an established rule to run the train from J Ninety-Six to Abbeville and return every ! Raleday, it would, when generally known j as an established order, pay the company; handsomely. The two last oc/asions .vhen the train from Abbeville made this trip! there was no publicity given, and very ; few even of those at Ninety-Six and! Greenwood knew of it till the train ar rived. There is a universal uumh-i throughout tins section of the county j that such an arrangement be adopted, and ! if definitely understood to bo the rulej every sale-day and other public occasions,, the train would be crowded to its full ca-, parity. It is earnestly hoped that such an . accommodation will be extended to the! public, which at the same time yields a handsome return to the company, and is| therefore not asked as an accommodation without suffiiient consideration for it. We ask Col. Haskel's attention to this: matter. Release or Cash. The release of Col. Cash on bail, is likely to result in more sheditig of blood In Chesterfield county, if we are to judge j from the intimations given out there, on ! receipt of the news of his discharge from the custody of the Sheriff in Columbia, j We would not be surprised if neither; Col. Cash nor his son ever lived to see the day of their trial, after the many j threats -made, and the defiant attitude thej'have assumed. The obligations of a tnonied bond are not sufficient to re-1 strain the mad passions of men not ae-; customed to restraint, and the chafing spirits probably will burst the silver chords by which it is sought to bindj them. This being understood, a community will not lisk the sacrifice of its val-, ued members, and on the slightest pretext, fancied or real, some member of it will deal an effective blow in its defence. If not, the people of Chesterfield are not like other people Mexican Veterans. There seems to be a little hope that the veterans of the Mexican war, are about to receive justice at the hands of the government. The House of Representatives has passed the pension bill for Mexican soldiers, but what will be its fate 111 the Senate, no one can ten. u win noi gei through that body if the Republicans can prevent it. The carp in the fish ponds about town j have not tared so weh during the winter. Mr. VV. 1. Wells lost four or five lull grown carp found floating on the surface i of his pond. Others compliin of like la* I tality among their fish. Whether it is the result of tlie cold weather we do not know. We are interested in this matter, I and would like to have the views of some j one experienced in this industry. It is possible that it may result from he fact that the ponds ire newly made, and the water too highly tinctured with decayed , vegetable matter. It is not probable that1 the tish would be affected by the freezes ] in a depth of water from three to live feet deep, in our latitude. Dr. J. W. W. Marshall, visited the| camp of Rico <fc Coleman near town, last Saturday, for the purpose of buying some of their tine mules. The Doctor says lie has not visited Greenwood since thedivis- j ion and sale of town lots near the depot about tUe year ISoli. He was a pupil here tinder James L. Lesley in 1H:50, .'57 and '38, from whose academy he and McGowan of Abbeville, Tompkins of Edge- : field, with eight or ten others entered the South Carolina College. Dr. Marshall expressed great pleasure in viewing his ulii rnimninir irrounds and the wonderful changes wrought l>y the hand of progress from those days till uow. The continued rains have retarded the operations of the farms to a very great extent, little or uothing having yet been done. Inquiry among our farmers as to the condition of the grain crops reveals the fact that a very large proportion of the oat crop has been killed, rendering the stand so thin on many fields as to destroy all hope of realizing a harvest from them. In addition to this, the heavy hail storm of the 19th ultimo, beat it so as to retard its growth till within the last two weeks, since which time it in beginning to revive. The wheat crop is more promising, t ' It is tillering tinely and bids lair to do well. Maj. B. F. Whitner came as far as Greenwood last Friday on his way to meet an appointment to address a railroad meeting at McCormicks in behalf of the tax for the Savannah Valley Railroad, but finding that he could not reach thero in time, he returned to Anderson. The Major is confident of success. The Georgia Central will take control as soon as it is graded. j Tjik consolidation of tlio (Jreonwooil, L'.iurens, and Spartanburg Kail road with I the Augusta and Knoxville road, was efIfected hero last Thursday by the authorities of the respective roads. An ell'ort to secure a provision in the contract for tin; completion of the line to Spartanburg by a definite time, failed ; but it is understood President Utoul will proceed to put on the cross-lies and iron as soon ' as the grading is completed, which will not bo uior" titan a fow wclis from now. There will be no delay in pushing the work forward to completion. ! Thkuk is ;i threat scarcity of provender for cattle in this section, and stock of all kinds are looking badly. It is poor ceoni)ii.y to neglect ample provision for stork | v. lieu they become mi pool* as to be of little value to the owner for the service rei quired of tlieui. Work stock are in much worse condition than usual this spring. The number of freight cars daily accumulating on the puliliesquare, is getting to be a nuis inee^iu as mm h as the street crossings a re often obstructed and vehicles are delayed in passing. When (ireenwood become-i a densely p ipulated city, and every body is going in a trot, this tiling will have to be ehinged. Mr. Walter Richardson of Congrovc, has some very line .nttle, of which be has made very satisfactory s.?!es. He sold a calf a few days ago to a itoorgian for sixty dollars. This is heller than raising cotton and relying on western corn and bacon for home consumption. Mr. S. 15. A I'Ktition, numerously signed, has j been forwarded to t::e authorities of the i C. and <J. railroad asking for the resiitu-j tion of J. II. Foulk to ii is position as conductor. i Rkv. J. P. Marion prcacned an able sermon to a large congregation in the Presbyteran Church last Sunday. There was no services in the other churches. Canpioatks are beginning to make their appearance almost in advance of peach blooms or early spring chickens. I What will the supply lie by summer? | K. (Jkaydon, K-tj., and family ofl Abbeville, visited relatives in town last | Saturday, and attended worship in the \ Presbyterian Church on Sunday. Fully one hundred bales of cotton were; received at this depot last week, when wej supposed it had all been shipped from tho country. Mit. \V. II.
