r __ The Press and Banner, AHUEVILLK, S. C\ Wednesday, June 13,1883. j Death or Miss Georgia Zeijrler. / - Mis* (ieorgia ZiM^Ior, one of <>:i- l>csl j beloved yon in; Indies is dead. She died i of measles last Monday moriiiin;. after a ! very short illness, and before hor neijh-j bors were aware of the threatened disso- I lniion. The people of Abbeville were] shocked at the announcement, and a feeling of sorrow lias pervaded every heart since the sad event became known. Ves- j terday morn in jj at ten o'clock, as a mark I of respect t<> the deceased, and as evidence : of personal sorrow at the calamity which had befallen the stricken household, the Court <?t ssexsions was aoiouriu'ii, aii mu stores of tlio town were closed, and busi- , ness ot every kind was suspended for an ' hour, wh?m an immense wilcourseof pen- ' pie assembled in the Methodist Church to 1 pay a tribute of affection to the memory ' of one who was so highly esteemed, and ( whoso sudden death lias east a shadow 1 over every heart. ' Tlio funeral services were conducted, in 1 tlie absence of the pastor, by the Rev. Mr. < Pritchard, assisted by the ltev. It. N. < ' Pratt. The beautiful burial service of the i Methodist Church was read, while many eyes were tilled with tears, and tlio Rev. i Mr. Pritchard delivered sin impressive ' sermon from the words of the Psalmist: ! "So teach us to number our days that we '< Inay apply our hearts unto wisdom." I And so* we have seen the last of this ' beautiful and accomplished voun? lad v. ' That never-ending sleep, which we call death, has stilled her gentle heart, and < left us only the remembrance of her I sweet attractive graces to beckon us on- ' Ward and upward to that better land, to j which she has gone. A few mouths ago,' i she left us, joyous and happy. After spending a season with her brother in a t distant State, her return to the parental ' roof was scarcely known in the town un- ( til she was sick of measles. And almost I before she had attained her womanhood, t lier work on earth was finished, and the "bitterness of death is past."' "So teach ' us to number- our days that we may ap-,( ply our hearts unto wisdom." ^ Refreshing Rains. j* This county has bcon blessed with re- \ freshing rains during the lust week. The ' ground has boon thoroughly wet, and ev- J pry mule has been put to work with the greatest energy to make ready and to f friant the bottom lands. The cotton plant ' lad not suffered for rain, 'jut the good Reason whs needed to germinateand bring\ J up the seed which had lain so long in: tnany places in soil too dry to sprout it. j < Thousands of acres of corn had been s planted, but had not come up on i I account of the drought which had pre- j' > vailed for several weeks. The rains last i \ week will set all crops to the most rapid t \ growth. ja , The oat crop has been cut short in near- j c Jy every section of the county in conse-!? ^ qnence of tho drought. * jv The dry cold spj ing has been favorable < to the fall sown wheat crop, which fully j matured without rust, but the spriug v wheat is not yet ripe, and is suffering 1 from rust. ?s As a rule, our farmers have not been a in better tinancial condition, nor in better .i xpirits, since the war. 11 There has not been much complaint s nbout labor. The farmers and their la- jv borers seem to understand each other bet-; ? ter than at any time since the inaugura- v lion of the new order of labor. i e The Public Schools. Through the practical and excellent management of the School funds by the present School Commissioner, (.'apt. K> I Cowan, the public schools of this county js are still open in very township, and in :l some of the tow ships the schools will be s kept open for seven or eight months, j which is a longer time than the public j0 schools havo ever been kept open in thisi ^ county. The Superin-lj tendants can look "solemnly sad," but 1 underneath this look, runs a stream of 1 convivial joy. There's Trayler, with a face as solemn as Sophocles, and a step as ' quiet as Isaac, yet he is not a gloomy | man. Some of the McCormick | girls thought some of the Void ery boys 1 were "well just so handsome," atul thej' McCormick boys thought they never saw i( such pretty girls anywhere, except at/ home, and they did wish that some of,1 them would consent, to come and be their ; 'own stricken dears." Here and there ; they went, talked, thought and enjoyed j themselves hugely. The Methodist Sun day School of one hundred and seventeen members, just made a complete pet of her' "little sister" the Baptist Sunday School, of sixty members. They took her toj their bosom and clearly showed tho Ver- J dery people that at home there was no | quarreling or envious strife. Sliylock- j. ike would take the last pound of fiesh, if: hey thought it Would add anything to heir ill-gotten gains. All human laws, j ike poor degenerate humanity, are vci v ( *r from perfection. Such, for instance, is the common! chool law, the tax law, the usury law! nd last though not least the lien law. It honld be the aim and desire of all legis- ] itors to enact laws that will opeiatoi, quatly upon all, tho rich, the poor, the j. 101 nl noil tlio free, mid not elevate the one'. ml oppress the other, nor enrich the one j }l :id impoverish the other. Don't this Dok like helping the laborer to live, when j t is making him poorer and morede-!. lendont daily ? Too much credit and in-!, lulgence is a curse to any country. By I nations and individuals become bank-i i upts, and their usefulness crippled or de-1. troyed forever. Webster says "many things are lawful I k-hich are not expedient." So I take it jj ny thing to lie expedient, should be pro- ;. notive of good either in the concrete or j _ bstract. I presume no one will deny]! hat the lien law is often abused and sad-;' y perverted and carried far beyond its! legitimate bounds. 1 really believe there ! j a more room for complaint in the abuse! f I he law, than there is in the law itself. ( The merchant is almost as important a | ictor in society as the farmer, it is verv iftlcult for the one to do without the ther, and the one ought to try to aid and i ssist the other. As I have intimated tin- J or the workimrsof tin- lion law. the mer haul commonly soils at his own price, nd the farmer has to take what lie can ! ;et, as tlio merchant has him completely . n his clntchos, and unfortunately man's J onscienee becomes very pliable or phis-i ( i?*. Ami sometimes the merchants, per- j ups unwittingly, interferes with the far-H ner's business and arrangements to the I ;reat annoyance and discomfort of tlie) atter. Ail are aware (here are more roods and tores in tho country, than will likely j trove profitable or beneficial to all the iierchants and farmers. I know of 0110 neighborhood in this lounty of tliree stores located in a trian- jj fular form in about two miles of each ; >thcr, each one owned and conducted by 1 lonorable gentlemen and tvell to do far- i nc*rs. These stores frequently tend top nerease the price of labor and its demor- J i ili/.ation. In tho first place, thev can give higher, j trices apparently for labor and pay thein !, n high priced goods, thereby forcing his , | nost intimate friend or nearest neighbor; ' o pay the same in cash or do without la-1 >or. Is this jnst and rigiit? Let the con- j< cientious merchant answer. In the second place, in my neighbor-j' lood most of the farmers furnish their' iwn hands in suonlies and Ilia necessa- i ies of life, lint the merchant in the vi- j inity who has a stock of goods, which , lost him something, aiul perhaps is pay-j ng a large interest on the money invest-: id, and in his reflections, he will conclude. hat he a*ilI let Mr. A'h hands have a few ] ;oods on a Hinall lien, and soon Mr. IVs md Mr. C's have to be accommodated in he same way. ' ! Well, let us see how the things works.1 Messrs. A, B, C, are furnishing land,' itock and rations to these sumc hands. , in other words, the farmer is feeding and he merchant is clothing them, and ev-| ;rybody knows wlu is acquainted with he laborers of our country, that if you 'eed *nd clothe them 011 time it is almost j in possible to work them to advantage. 1 The farmer in most casos does not | 4now what tiie merchant is doinjf, until: lis laborers are almost demoralized. The j merchant will excuse himself by saying [ am assuming the risk in selling his ;oods, and, perhaps not knowing or earng that what he is doing is detrimental, :o the farmer's intercut. The farmer or the merch'ant, one or the >ther, and not both, should feed and ;lothe the laborer, if ho is not able to do t himself. I have hastily thrown together these jrttdo remarks as my honest convictions, I ind I do it with all due deference and re- j <poct to the merchant, hoping who ever ;nay feel enough interested to read them, i will meditate and ponder seriously upon ; :hem, particularly the merchant, who has1 been doing tho above and ask himself jandidly if he has been doing right, and :arrying out the golden rule ? Wo farmers think we have rights and privileges delegated to us by our Maker i ind country, and no one has the moral or! legal right to interfere with u:* in the en- j jovment of the same. I repeat what I have said, is in the spir it of the utmost kindness, but if the shoo j pinches any one's toes he will please get liim another pair that will tit a little looser and give his conscience full play ind "coase to do evil and learn to do well."
