According to previous urr mirements the two Sunday Schools of McConnick J arrived at ten o'clock l?v special train : over the Greenwood and Amrusta Kiilroad, and were met at the Verderv depot bv the Sunday Schools of \Vl:ita Hall,, Hriarwond. Bculah, and Ashury. Alter! inarching in proeossior. to tlie ciioi?h, the exercises were opened with praver by l>r. Sloan. After music and songs of praise the chairman of the meeting, the Rev. 15. F. Miller, then delivered the address of welcome, wliich was responded to by the I{ev. Mr. Harmon. This was followed by in;i<i<*. when Jiulgo J. F. Lyon, Major J. L. 'A'hite, Mr. I\ Ii. Stnrkey, ('apt. I.. II. Ilykard and Dr. Sloan each io the order in which they are named made short and appropriate addresses. The President at the conclusion of the exercises announced dinner, end invited the vast concourse to the table in tho .f-ovo where pood things for the temporal man would be served as bountifully and as generously as had been given the words of spiritual adino- [ nition and tlie comforting assurance of tiivinc care for the souls of tho sons of earth. Without using any hifalutin language or extra vacant hyperbole, we would sav that tho spread was equal to that of any similar occasion, liotli as to quantity and quality, ami was worthy of the good people who had assembled to give a hearty welcome to their honored quests from The neighboring town of MeCormick. After dinner, the assembled j people had nothing else to do than to entertain each other. Some returned to the church and listened to delightful music | from the choir, and. while the choir were feinging songs of praise and thanksgiving to Ilim who first loved lis, it ^ barely possible that sweeter words of a certain 'old, old story," may have been spoken at Reality's shrine. Others of this concourso of people stood or sat in groups within the delightful shade of the overhanging branches of the forest trees, y ivhere devoted lovers may have poured the sweetest words into willing ears ; or, it may be, that those sweet words, uttered in smothered sighs, curdled in their utterance, and gave back a thrill of sorrow ^ to the heart of the pleading speaker re-1 minding him of tho painful fact that "Some hearts 20 hungering through the world And never tlnd the love they seek." Then there wero older and more mature, citizens present, who had long since lost the poetic romance of youth, but nevertheless enjoyed the occasion in talking of! the crops, the weather, and other common topics, or in the joyous giving and j receiving of the greetings of old soldiers,? who fought their battles over again. And , then there were still another variety of j the human race present whom it would not do to overlook. We refer to that class 1 who are sometimes irreverently spoken of as the "undergrowth" or "spring! chickens." Their conduct and evident enjoyment of the occasion reminded us; of tho facts that there is nothing fn life j half so sweet a? love's young dream, and j that "the fair young maiden often heals I her wounds with gentle hands." Tho praises of the people of Verdery is in tho mouths of all who were present at the pie-nic. It was really a delightful oc- s vasion, and the dav?wili long be romemwith nleasttre l?v both hosts and guests. The people of Verderv were es- i peciallv pleased that tho Mct'ormick j Sunday Schools chose their town as thej [dace to go on an excursion, and woi :now that tho people of McCormick, U were delighted to meet a people so true! and so warm hearted. Verderv seems to bo growing rapidly, i and it will certainly be a good business centre at no distant day, if new roads can i be opened to the town. We think Ver-j dory might take a hint as to the necessity | ( of giving their cut-oft neighbors a high- j way to their market. That town does not how get as much trade as it otherwise | I, won hi get, if more roads were opened, L und the probability is, that this naturally t good business location will lose some of j1 L the trade that it now has unless new I B routes are opened. We know that the!, I customers from one locality are now' W compelled to go over a rougher road fully ( two miles longer that) the better and more direct way because about four hnndre.l j, yards of V public road, which is posted j' and has been used time out of mind, has , boon enclosed by a fence. When a man has to travel about three miles before hoj' can get 0110 mile on his way he feels li'tlej' like making the journey, and we know of at least one farm from which trade will;1 be transferred to Greenwood before this j imposition will be submitted to; The!! road to Greenwood is as good as any in i the county, while the round-about road | Irom this place to Verderv is not half so! good and is but a little shorter. When a load is to be hauled, the uood road more than compensates for the slight difference' in distance, and if Vcnlery would market i the crops of Hard Labor p.nd the lands j beyond it, the people must be allowed a; highway. There* are already several stores at Ver- j dory, and all are doing a line business. At no point on the A. <fc K. It. It. do wcj send more copies of the press ami ncr than to Verdery, and as sonn as new i loads are opened to this place, the stores j and the county newspapers will do a bus- J iness which will be srill more griitifving. i The people of the town of Bradley were fully aware of the advantages to be derived from new roads, and for this rea-j son, spent much time and labor in open-j ing new highways, even before the sound of the locomotive whistle was heard in! that vicinity, and their progress and the; large trade which has rewarded their ef-t forts has proved the wisdom of their ae- j tion. And if we are rightly informed a certain great ruler in ancient times always favored every road that pointed to his fa-, vorite city. Icecream, lemonade, beer, and hot cot-j t_i fee of the best quality were sold at lower iriees than we have ever before seen such usuries offered. Editor Riley of the Saluda A vgus was' present at tue pic-nie, una we uouiu not ? tlmt he will present his readers with a; fuller and better a-conntof the affair than we have. Wo depended on a friend to write a report for us. In his failure we have attempted the foregoing. The Comitv Commissioners. The County Commissioners were in Session last Monday and spent a busy day of it, though not much of general interest to the public was done. A claim against the county for services rendered in 1881, was presented to the Hoard and rejected because not filed in the year in; which the services were rendered nor the year following, as required by lav?. Mary ! Brady, an aged and infirm colored woman, was received into the Poor House On a petition signed by half a dozen or more responsible white men. The Board made arrangements by which they will, in a few days, be prepared to make a full report to the Statu Commissioner of Agricultural of the information desired by! Senator IJutler for his researches in the {>ublic road interests. This report might live been sent forward some time ago but f>r the remissness of many of the township superintendents in making their quarterly reports to the Board ; several of these gentleman have not oven yet reported, and the County Commissioners will be put to considerable inconvenience in securing accuracy in their statements, Unless these reports come in at once. 0 The Board desired to proceed, after crops are laid by, with thg opening of a hew road in Cedar Springs township which was suspended some time since on account of the objections of landowners. The road law as at present furnished to overseers is deficient in several particulars, and it was decided to make such additions from tbe General Statutes as may be nocessary to enable tlio overseers to I carry out the law fairly and fully. Park' ticnfarly is this revision needed"so as to f include those sections reUtirg to exemptions from road duty, and to abuses of the public roads by throwing trash into the road ditches, etc. Many farmers, are anxious to get the benefit of the old fence rov s, plow across them and even into the rn ddleof the road, depositing rails and other rubbish in the ditches and leaving them so, ignorant of the fact that the law inflicts penalties of fine and imprisonment for such neglect. The Clerk of the Board will do the revising. A considerable part of the day was taken up in hearing "the testimony of witnesses in the proceeding to impeach the action of the Board last year in binding out Eugenia Ellis, a small colored girl, as an apprentice to B. F. Yoe; Tho Board was in some doubt as to their jurisdiction to reopen the matter, but upon the allegation that misrepresentation and fraud had been practiced upon the former Board to secure its assent to the indentures, decided to hear the testimony. After the hearing and upon mature deliberation, it was considered that the proof did not warrant the setting asido of an act of a former Board which was in all respects regular on its face. So the matter was dismissed. After transacting some further business, tho Board adjourned. The Work of the Treasurer. The Treasurer of Abbeville count}' had collected for all purposes up to the Closing of his May collections, the sum of $4,925.07, or about oue-teuth of the entire tax of the count}'. We think as those who do not pay are charged ten percent, penalty on that part which is due and not paid, that it would be fair to allow a premium of ten per cent, to those who anticipate payment, by settling the whole amount of their taxes. The government needs the money, and can well afford to bo liberal with the citizen. ^ Mr. H. G. Mei.lvii.j.k. \ Deserving1 Prosperity. [.I ndrrson Journal.] A good citizen of Abbeville county remarked to us the other day that he was clad to see the evidences of prosperity now enjoyed by Anderson, for he thought the place deserved to prosper. He always finds it inorc satisfactory to travel some eighteen miles to do his iTfark?'fing in Anderson than toga only about] fourteen to Abbeville. He says the difference In the two places in every way Is very ' much lii:<> this: If he takesaload of cotton to Abbeville he has to unload the best way lie can. while at Anderson lie can send a boy to the depot a"d have his cotton unloaded and promptly welched. If he buys salt or flour In Anderson it Is put on the wagon for him. ; but in a like case at Abbeville he would have to load up himself. This is certainly a mark| ed difference, and shows the Importance of i learning that farmers understand and appre. ciate proper consideration as well as anybody ; else. ; A Farmer Weakens on His Job ?Major J. G. Harris, who recently purchased the old Ashury farm, near the city, has a farmer who did a lively day's plowing yesterday. Mr. F. A. Heeves is the man, and his record is hard to beat. He started to work early in the forenoon, and by dinner he had plowed up and killed twenty spreading adders and fifteen copperheads, besides dozens of rats, moles and other vaimint. but the biggest lia'iil of all was made in the afternoon, when the astonished farmer plowed up a female dog with nine hull pups at her breast. The plow share was running overa hollow place in the irround where an old stump had stood when it raked tip this family. This was too much for Mr. Keevcs' neves and he unhitched his horse, firntlir .innl I n I ntr to ntoir mini her fn rrow of old land 'unless he could get. somebody to walk alone; by him with a double barrel shot gun, as he didn't know what to expect next.? ^ Charlotte Jouriial-ObstTUcr.
