Even those who live in boarding Iioum s tenderly warble that sonn. Home is more to a woman than toainau. A man who lias no home i> a social tramp. With a woman* it is different ; -he wants a home, hu! does not always have a chance to net it. The Owner's Rights in a Forced Sale, i Wushinyl'jii Republican. l lie case 01 utwinn, 01 noum t aronua, vs. i the United states, aiuticd in the court of i Claims, yesterday, presents a very interesting ' point. The claimant's land in Beaufort, S. C.. I was sold for iiireot taxes during the war, and J tin- statute authorized the tax commissioners i to hid not exceeding two-thirds |lie assessed ' value of th?* lands, and the priee hid lor this | exceeded the taxes and all charges hy several j iiiiikIred dollars. The court lias heretofore dc- j cided ill a ease that where the land was bid oil'by a citizen the original owner was entitled to this balance, hut in the prAunt case the (iovernment. being the. bidder, claims that the land was forfeited for non-payment of the taxes, and it being the purchaser was not hound to nay. On behalf of the claimant it was strenuously urged that under the statutes as construed by the Supreme Court, If the land was stricken oil to the Government for anything beyond tiie tax and charges, the Government became a purchaser just as an individual, and that the claimant was entitled to the balance from the (iovernment in the same way. It was stated in argument that nearly SW)0.000 of land, at a very low assessed valuation, had been bid off by the Government forSTT,000 to pay taxes on a charge amounting to only $17,000; and that from resales the (iovernment had already realized over S3UO,OOt', besides having several thousand acres of land. Mr. John T. Blair represented the Government and Mr. William ii. Earlc the claimant.
