Major T wiv^s Contractor on tho Savannah Valley Railroad ami on the Georgetown and Lanes Railroad passed through town yesterday on his way to the depot to take- an extra train tor L.tn?-s on tho North Kitstern R'tilrotul. !I? had with him thirty carts, three wagons, ami other necessary tools in grading a railroad, an l about one hundred and twentylive hands?seventy-live of whom wore convicts. They marched through town in squads, secured by chains. A sutiieiont nutnher of guards were along to make the trip, without danger of losing any of them. Major Twiggs leaves about fifty hands at work 011 the Savannah Valley Railroad, and will return next June to push tho work in Abhevillo with greater vigor than ever. "We were sorry to see the Major going away from Abbeville. but trust that good fortune and good luck await him in his new home, in the low country. Our friends in Georgetown must lre.at him well, lie is worthy of their most cordial welcome. 11 i>: pluck and tjnergy will give them a good' road in quick time, if they only furnish tho money to do the work. Tho Major, liuished one good road for us, and has made a good start on another. Let Georgetown get the money and leave the rest to him. A Small Farm. A tract of one hundred and twelve, acres of land on Hard Labor, a consider- j able portion of which was not in cultivation, produced the following crops this year: Mr. Daniel Howard gathered fortyeight wagon loads of corn, in an extra large size body with side planks, estimated at eight hundred bushels, sixtylive gallons sorghum, and about two. - - - ' - < M.. II .... ; bales or cotton, jh mis wuin .>h. u...,?rd had one mule, uiul fifteen days extra plowing. Frank Cunningham, on tlio same place made one hundred and thirty bushels of corn, which was planted after a crop of barley had been cut off tho land?new; ground. Wado Turner made two hundred and ten bushels of corn. Washington Green with one mule made over two hundred bushels corn, thirty-! one bushels of oats, nineteen bushels J wheat, ninety-one gallons sorghum, and it is estimated that lie will gather between six iind seven bags of cotton. Henry Williams made two hundred bushels of corn. Henry Ilackett made fifty-two bushels' of corn! Wet or Dry. The election a? to License or no-Li-: conse in tho town of Abbeville isexciting' some interest just now. As there may j l>e some misapprehension as to tho com-' mutation of road duty, and an increase of tax on the property of tbe town, we append tlio following figures: Total taxable property of the town at present valuation '1 mills on this, amount (the maximum that can be lev-' ied under tho present charter of the town) j will raise ?92S. 10. j There aro about 240 citizens subject to; road dutv. which at ?^.50 per capita, will raise j(?<)o.OO. It will take about $1,800, to defray tho ] expenses of the government of the town j for tiie next twelve months. If tlio reve- j nuo now arising from the liquor license | is withdrawn it will necessitate au in-1 crease levy of A t'> j of one mill over 111< present rate of taxation; to do which will require an amendment of the charter ofj tho town, as under tho present charter j the authority to lev v is limited to 20 cents j on every hundred dollars of taxable j property. .CP. The Greenwood and Laurens Railroad. While the work of grading is being, rapidly pushed to completion on the other side of the river, a leolinr of indifference seems to have taken possession of the people in Abbeville county, along :lie' line from Greenwood to tho rirer, and tlio prospects of the new road are now f not so encouraging as the friends of tlit; j enterprise could wLsb. The citizens in our county seem to think that they will ' yet the road, whether they pay a cent to-; wards its construction, ana in some instances propose to charge for the right ofj way. We believe that the Laurens Cotu- i missioners have no rit;iit to spend money grading the road in Abbeville. This will1 leave about ei^ht or nine miles of this { important road ungraded, and thus the] connecting ljuk will bo missing. Prominms to Abbeville. Among the pramiuins awarded at the State Fair to citizens of Abbeville county we notice the following: A. B. Ellis, ttiree year old stallion. J. D. Fooshe, matched marcs. J. 1). Uh, thai I could de-j stroy that unbelieving thought! There is salvation, there is uierey, there is forgiveness; | and it is free to every soul that will come and < $ take it. It isas free as the air you breathe,or as the water leaping from the street lountain I yonder. "Wliosoiver will, let him ceme, and c "take of the water of life freely.'1 You are mistaken in those gloomy reflections. You write bitter things against yoursell, hut God has ? not written them. What It you should take '] h'-art and get a hope. "Perhaps I may to-night tlnrt eternal lite. 1'erhaps 1 may to-niglu go' out of tills house relieved of the burden of t my sin." it were a koovI beginning if thou j hadst such a hope, lint thou may est with con- I ttdcnce go a great deal further. j11 One reason wl y you have not obtained com-! fort is, perhaps, that you do no', know all the .. gospel yet. (i<md news half told may often j' seem to be bad news. Itiavc read that in ttie I days of the semaphore signals a mcsaae U; came across to England concerning the Duke of Wellington, and iialt the message was read i as it appeared upon the semapliore, and as-1 C tonished all England with the sad intelli-j genco. It ran thus. "Wellington defeated." Everybody was distressed as they read it, hut; s it so happened that they I.ad not seen all the j message. Kog ha 1 intervened, and whcii.oyi and byo, the air was clearer and the telegraph 1 l: Hashed out a second time. It ivau thus: "Wei- j liimton defeated the French"?quite another ,, thing, quite the reverse, indeed, of what half the message had led men to fear. Thus when | you hear half the gospel, it may appear to ; condemn you; but you have only to mar the j other half to tind out. its encouiMgiug tidings. I I would say, He diligent In hearing the gos-' 1 pel; be diligent In searching it out in thesa-]t cretl book, whieli OoJ has given tons; and. when you know lite truth more lully, you will tind faith come to you by the hcarlngand ! t the understanding of tiie word of God. Leave I those ministers wim preach only a (>ortiou of! lie gospel, and'try to know a II the message of! c love; and you will, by the teaching of the! Holy Spirit, soon lose your tears. ? ji Do y<>u not think, too, that some seekers miss comfort because they forget that Jesus I Christ is alive? The Christ of t he I'liurch of!/ Home is always seel. in oncof l\vo positions? [ either as a babu in his mother's arms, or ehe | a* dead. That Is Home's Church; but our l t'brist is alive. Jesus who rose has "left the dead no more to die." I was requester' in Tu-1 . rin to join with others in asking to .see the j ' shroud in which the Saviour whs buried. li? must confers that 1 had not faith enough to j believe in the shroud, nor had I curiosity enough to wish to look at tiie lieiltious linen, j: I would not cari- a penny for the article, even I if 1 kuoxv it to be genuine, our I.ord has lcit s his shroud and sepulchre, t*nd lives in lieav-! < en. To-nicht he so lives that a sigh of yours! l will reach iiitn, ft tear will find liuu, a desire \ in your heart will bring him to you. Only), seek him as a loving, living Saviour, and put I your trust in him as risen from the dentl no more to die, and comfort will, I trust, come into your spirit. II. Now, in the second place, the greatest comfort which I can very well conceive Is that which Isconvcytd in the text. It istltls: "Be of good comfort, rise; hecalleth thee," a good word for the Mind man, for he knew that Jesus did not call him to mock him, and t that he did not say, "come hither" that lie} might merely tell him, "your eyes cannot be opened.'' Jesus did not call him to sport with him and send him away disappointed. I Christ's ca!ls are hone?t calls, and guarantee ; blessing to those who accept them. Now, b"loveit friends, there are two calls I mentioned In Scripture. The one is the gen-! eral call of the gospel, and the other is t lie i f-1 fectual call, the personal call, by which men | are saved. The general universal call oucht to yield | great comfort to any seeking soul. In the word of (io,l, you. rlexr Iwarer, are called to i eome to Christ, even you. Why do 1 know) that? Because, when Jesus gave the commission to his disciples. he salil: "(Jo ye into all the world anil preach the gospel to every creature." You are a creature, are you not? Well. then, you must be included in that range. We are to preach the gospel to you. j And then again: 'This Is a faithful saying,| and worthy of all acceptation, that Jesus j ? hrist came into the world to save sinners " You are a sinner, are you not? Do you not ad-1 mitthat? Very well, tlien, according to the! text, that faithful saying is to be addressed toj you. And you, dear seeker, feel a burden tip-1 on your soul, do you not? You aie laboring] hard to get salvation. Therefore, the gospel call must be addressed to you ? "Coniv untoi me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden.and j I will give you rest. ' Indeed, there ate many j such calls, but there Is another wiiieh must 1 include you: "Whosoever will, let hint come, and take the water of life fieely." Are you willing to come? Then you are undoubtedly called to come to Christ, should not ihatfact comfort you? because, as I have already said, > oil to pome without il>lottclitit; to bless you. | , < >li. h-'H!- his honest call, and pluck up courage 1 ami come to him. ! The Invitation is so large, and there is tills 1 to be noted concern ins: it. No one was ever | refused yet. There is n well-known institni tion In London. which hears ncross the front | of il: "No destitute noy ever refused." Well | may we put tliis over Christ's great lionse ol uierey: "No destitute soul ever reiused." 1 can imagine two hoys standing on the pavej ment In front of I>r. Barnado's Institution, ! and one saying to the other, "Can we go in j there?" "Yes," says the other, "I should , rather think we could. We are destitute, aren't we? I/>ok here, my clothes are all in ruts, and I have not a penny in the world and j no father and no mother, i slept under a dry j | arch last night. I am a destitute boy. and no ' i mistake." I can only suppose Hint the other! might boastfully say,"I ain't destitute; not I. : i I fs.n earn my living any day, and I have got; a hall crown in my jvtekct." Now. that lei- I ; low has no claim to lie admitted, because he is ; not destitute; but the boy ? ho is hungry and , ragged and homeless is sure to lie welcomed.! j As lie reads those lines. "No destitute boy J j ever refused," he says. "There Is hope for me J ! then." Now, then, destitute soul, lesu?. Christ never refused one like you yet. If you ! haven store of merit of your own. if you he-1 iieve you can be saved by your good works,? you do not come under the head of "ties 11- 1 tale." "The whole have no need of a pliysl-1 cian, but they that are sick." But if you are J stripped of all boasting, if you are brought to i bankruptcy as to personal merit. If you have come down to absolute poverty as tonny hope in yourself, then, as nodestitutesoul ever was j rejected or ever shall be, come to Jesus at jonce! Come at onec, I say- "Be of good | , il.tj lie iil'oth Itlw." j r.ut,d.arl"i lends, 1 said that there was an-j I other and an elleetual call. That call the ! Iloly S;>irit d1 reels to individuals, and when It : I comes, it is not resisted,, or if resisted for a j while, it is ultimately yielded to, so that tne j ! man te constrained to mine. O Holy Spirit,) (give that call lo-nluhi! There were two' brothen^flshing. and Jesus said tothem, "Kol-1 I low ine.'? Tiiey threv down their nets and I followed him. Matthew was sitting at the re-1 jcelptof custom, with his pen behind his ear, I , and his account books before hitn. Jesus said,' | "Follow me.'' Up Matthew rose, and follow-i ed him at once. That little teUow, the tax-1 i gatherer, had elinilied up a tree because. being j j short of stature, he could not see over the | I heads of the crowd. While he was looking j down from anion*; the leafy brunches, the' | Master stood at the bottom of the tree, and [said: 'Zaccheus, makehasteandcomedown, i for to-ila.v I must abide in thy house." The j Spirit of (iod had given tiie effectual call, and ] Christ was in that man's house shortly after,' and the man gave abundant evidence of a | change of heart. Oh, may the Kternal Spirit, j ! sneak in that fashion to some here present, so that they may at once yield and follow Jesus j Christ. III. Now, lest I weary you, I am going to , | close with the third head, which Is that the j I comfort drawn from our calling should lead to j Immediate action, "lie of good comfort, rise; ' he callcth thee. j That exhortation to rise means instant de'clston.
