Mr. Young was one of tiie founders of the College, and hud stuck to it tinoiuh good report and through evil re;>ort. Mr. Lowiy was an excellent gentleman, who had come from a distant town at their invitation, and to dismiss him now would incur serious loss to him personally. A lino of action could not be blazed out that night, ami the Board adjourned to meet next any. un Wednesday tne attendance was the same as on the previous night. Weuie intorimd that as a compromise, to satisfy all all parties, that it was determined to coniinue Professors Young and Lowry at an annual salary of live hundred dola.s, and to employ an assistant teacher for each of these Protestors. There wjin some surprise felt that so much of ilu* previous art.on of the students and the more recent action of the Hoard in entertaining Mr. Sloan's resolutions h.id found its way Into ill.. ,,nti Itmiurr. WICKLIFFE, Chairman Committee. | Rev. T)r. Aixjek hus a letter of "explanation" in another column which is taken from tli?' Asooci-ite Iirftmwtl Prc?by<erv>n, We do ' not know how much good it will do, but as a general rule it is a bad plan to put one's self un the defensive. Better suffer wrong than to defend. The report was so contrary to the ' Doctor's well established character that it could do him no harm with people who were I conscious of their own worth. It Is evidence of weakness to be too sensitive as to what m >y W said of us In a casual or thoughtless < manner. We have the greatest a Initiation \ Kir Dr. Adser, mid regard him as one of the , lust men In upper South Carolina, while the As?ocintc Reformed Presbyterians have no superiors In the world. All this being true, then; is no reason why either should do the other any liHrm in word or thought, and we 1 cannot believe that either would say or do anything to Wound the feelings of the other. If however, a few more prominent Presbyterians would write letters like Dr. Adder's w<nre Of opinion that the "Seceders" would not go over to them, but would stay in tln-lr own church. 11 li now in order for Dr. Adger to apologize to such as have already gone over. The editor of the Laurtnville I I'.mid npologlxcs for being able to send out only a half sheet this week. If wc could whisper to hint across the Ennoree, we would say stick to the half sheet. It Is the best, number of the JleraUl we have seen lately,?Ourolina Spartan. Don't be ambiguous Mr. Spartan. Say wbat you mean.?X?aurenr<//? Hvrald.?We take a different view from that taken by the Carolina S/>artan. When the JhraUi uses the patent outside it is one of the very best papers that comes to this office. When It prints a half sheet It lucks the miscellaneous matter so nccessary to the existence of a country newspaper. If the Spartan meant u fling at patent outsldes, it only argued a want of Information on a very Important subject. Mr,' Nail is a forcible nnd practical preacher and | marte a good Impression on those who heard him. It U to be regretted, however, that oar people took so-llttle interest In tills meeting. The empty pews at the morning nnd evening nervlces told a sad tale as to the religious status of our church-going people.?Keowee Cou-! rier. I,et the preachers make their sermons ! more nitnictlve nnd more Interest Inst, audi there will be no lack of audiences. Good ser-1 uions will draw. We have been told that the Amxinte Re/nrmed Prenbytnrian replied to our article In reference to trie Kev. K. A. Ransom, P. I>., In which that paper held that we were not en-1 tlrety respectful to the aged divine. In so far ' a* our article may have had the appeamnco , of disrespect to the Doctor, we would sav that | we disclaim any Intention to he offensive. It | is our aim to be respectful at all times to! those who may differ from tie. The article of; the Auociale Reformed. Presbyterian appeared ; during our absence at Cincinnati, and we: have not seen it. In this we only disclaim j the idea that we meant to bo disrespectful. Major W. K. Public meetings will soon be called for these places.when spce hes in the lntei est of this great enterprise will be made. Put your heads to thinking about this matter, as the voters will In all probnblliiy be called upon to tax themselves fortbls Iron highway. One half-mile of Hard Labor Creek In "White Hall township has hart the logs and rafts removed from It. It Is hoped that, by a little ditching, and the removal of the logs and rafts that sixty acres of bottom land 011 one'small farm, which has heretofore been flooded by every heavy rain, can soon be cultivated without fear of overflow. Vlsltoro came from Georgia, Nort Carolina and southern South Carolina V. to attend the several oxerelses. The written and oral examination was a very attractive : feature to visitors Irom abroad. These exer- ^ elses were largely attended by the patrons of the College, and the friends of education V throughout tin; whole week previous to Com- '' nieneeinent proper. The visiting members of h| the Kxaming Itourd expressed great satlsfae- . Hon at. tlie handsome ae<piitals of the students. The Professors ol Adger College are . progressive, and intend makingthe examinaHon hereafter a more Important factor in Commencements. A little speech-making, the awaiding of medals, delivering of the diplomas and the like, enter too largely into the sinr qua nous of college commencements. The I'rotessors of Adger College, we hear, are devising plans by which their written and oral examinations will constitute a very In terestingfeature In Commencement exercises scholarship Is the ultimate object to be ob- , tallied by a college course, and not merely nolisli. as is loo often the case these days of ,f,J general humbugging.
