I The Press and Banner J> ^ _ _ i ABBEVILLE, S.C. \\ Wednesday, Nov. 26,1879. j The Literary Club. The Abbeville Literary Club met last Kri- j day nis:lit 21st instant, at tli? house of MjiJ. j j A. It. Wardlnw. In spile of the cold, frosty j iilsiht. there was u full attendance of tlie!c members. J. Alston t'aboil, Ks<|., of Kich-J mond, Va., an honorary inetnbvr was pros-1 cut. The president of the etub, cJeneral s. j [ Mcflowan. occupied the choir. A resolution] 1 proposing the annual sale of the club mag-i^ azilies and rcviows some time in December! was on motion laid on the table, the under-'f standing being that the sale would be order- v ?d for the first or second week in January, it, The Secretary, Mr. Dellruiil, reminded the jiifinbcrstO.it the annual subscription lans i due to tie paid ou or before tin: first of Decent-!. bcr. J ? The essayist for the occasion was Mr. Thomas I'.Yotliran. He read un excellent paper on "Property qualification in tlie suf-j F frage." Arguing from the principle that the 'I object of good government is to atl'ord pro- -1 tcctlon to life, liberty, and property, and | from the belief that the suffrage Is not a nat- ti uraI right but simply n political means and ?j expedient for seen ring .jood government, the i t( essayist concluded that the suffrage .should be restricted by a property qualification. Those possessed of inconsiderable property should be satisfied If their life and liberty were properly protected. Only those possessed of '' a sullieient amount of property should have the right to vote. I f" The members of the club discussed the 111 subject variously, some advocating universal1 gi suffrage, others endorsing the conservative views of the essayist. A preference was ex-1 C( pressed by several for the educational or in- tt tellectualqualification which obtains in Massachusetts. although it was agreed that on the whole the best and most practical test of in- a telligence was the possession of property. " Tl'" ?Amn.lll?n ?ti ?iitnvi?ls ILllil tllllrCK f)f meeting reported Mr. \V. (McGowan nstri next essayist. wlUi the Ttev. Mr. Callaudct us u alternate; next meeting to be h?'ld at the house of W. A. Lee, Ksq. Mr. McGow an in- r, timated that the subject of his essay was ' " "Christmas." After the usual refreshments F' the club adjourned to meet on Friday evening 26lh December. Innocent, Very. o1 One day last week, the weathet* being Cold, j p Sheriff Dupre thought to ameliorate the. condition of the unfortunates in his keeping by n making a fire In ti>e corridor of thejait. when w the prisoners were allowed to come from the w ceils to warm themselves by the stove, After : the fire had been burning sometime Mr. Hu- , Pre left the Jail, On his return in the after- ?! noon he discovered that the floor was smutty about, the stove.
