I ' "'V The Press and Banner. ABBEVILLE, S. C. Wednesday, May 7, 1879. May Pic-Xic. The pupils of the Abbeville Graded School had a holiday last Friday to enjoy their May pic-nic. In spite of the ruin on Thursday, the day turned out bright and pleasant. The *pie-nic was hold in the Fair Grounds, *?nd was attended by a i large number of tue pupils, and by a number ct' vouiut ladies and gentlemen. , But where were the parents, the teachers, tho trustees? Tho first class had only one representative wbo did hor duty sweetly and effectively. The three teach- . ers were conspicuously absent. Of the > board of trustees only two were at the pic-nic. This does not show a kindly interest in tho welfare and happiness of j, the childrcp. It is right and pleasant to I, have the parents, teachers and trustees j showing interest in tho school work of 1 the pupils; would it not ho just as right and pleasant to show interest in their ' amusements? The young folks had a 1 morry day of it nevertheless. They had 5 good fun and a good dinner, and a joyous dance afterwards, no thanks to 11 their over-sedate seniors. Poor fun-for- 1 saken Abbeville! It would not surprise us to hoar of children born here , with hoary heads and care-wrinkled t brows. Death of One of Our Best Citizens. \ Last Monday morning Mr. Robert Brownlee of Donaldsville fell dead, aged c about sixty-seven years. Up to tho time . of his death ho had been in his usual * health, lie lived the life of a consistent Christian from childhood, and was one of j J! the very best men in the community in | * which lie lived. For forty years before j his doath ho held the office of Elder in I < tho Greenville Presbyterian church, j a Possessing a quiet and unobtrusive man- j i>er, a high integrity, and a kind heart, s he hold the confidence and esteem of all! ti who knew him. Truly a good man has been lost to us. His pastor writing to a I friend under date of May 5, says: My j V Elder Robert Brownlee fell dead this morning and I will be at the funeral tomorrow. and cannot go to preach as I ex- " peoted to do. Oil! what a loss to.Green- v villo church! He sang for me yesterday in good health?to-day he is a corpse, c When ho was well, his seat was never c vacant. The Union Times and the new Sehed- I; nle. Our friend of tho Union TVmwputs the Abbeville papers down as opposed to the proposed new schedule to Charleston. I This error furnishes one more proof that the editor never roads his Abbeville ex- s changes. Tho Abbeville papers were about the first to urge the fast schedule ^ and havo never failed to give their iufluence in that direction. Wo would ask our brother to correct tho error into which P he has fallen, but we know that he would never soo tho request unless the Register li the News and Courier, tho Charlotte Observer. or tho SDartanburtr papers should i > copy it. The new schedule is a necessity | for Charleston and this section, and wetwould like to be set right on the record. J It is Raid that our Edgflfield neighbors | ^ alone; the Abbevillo line are clamoring ; for the stock law as we have it. We hope i S that this great blessing may be secured i for the people of Edgelield at the nextsit-; r ting of the Legislature. Any member of : that body who should vote to deny hisj 3 people sogreata boon should be retired ; * to the private walks of life, .that other j ?nd better men might take their places. '' The stock law is a necessity for Edge- j field countj'. Tub Likn Business?Clerk Zeigler reports to us that he has recorded twentytwo hundred liens this 3'ear, against twenty-one hundred last year. This doesn't speak well for the agricultural interests of the county. No amount of " newspaper abuse, entreaty or argument u seems to be effective against this great rt evil of consuming other people's goods cl at immense usury. Patent Soap.?Mr. Norris, who has Jjj been for six week, trying to sell patent u soap rights, returned last Saturday, and reports the people of Wilkes and Elbert b counties as the poorest on the continent, bi lie and Mr. Tusten's horse bore nnmislaken evidence of the tact that they had P1 a poor time. Isn't selling patent soap a j poor business anyway? We soe by our exchanges that the yj Charleston Presbytery readily granted j the Rev. J. G. Law permission to preach j a for the Circular Church in Charleston. a< We are glad to note the fact. Presbvte- -! rian preaching is fully up to the highest c standard, and we fail to see the propriety . of denying that, kind of preaching to any ni congregation who may seek it. * ti Sudden Death.?John, aged three I'll years, grandson of A. L. McCaslan, Esq.,! ol died in this place last Saturday morn- ?i ing, after an illness of about thirty-six if hours. The physician who attended iiiin 'j thought he died of ineningetis. The child was buried at Lower Long Cane beside his mother who had preceded him C( to the grave. T The exercises at the Methodist Church li is still in progress and are attended with unabated iuterest on tha part of the con- j p gregation. Itev. R. N. Pratt preached on d< Friday night, and Rev. Mr. Simmons preached Sunday night. The prayer was l> by Rev. Mr. Martin. The eftoct of the l< tDceting will result in much good. 11 Mb. He works on the I cj Nevada plan of "sluicing." j n Our friend Colonel J. F. Treutlen of j1 Cokesburv, has lately arrived at homo |J from a trip to Washingion city. He S( J rives quite interesting detail* of tho po- a itical movements about the national cap- d Itol. The Colonel failed to see Mrs. Kimpton on this trip. " W*. W.
