The weather is a "fail-me-never" kind of subject with mankind the whole world over, always chnnsoahle, never monotonous, and therefore always interesting. Although every man thinks himself familiar with the weather, the familiarity never attains to that thoroughness which breeds contempt. At all times deserving and receiving our attention, the weather at the present time is of more than ordinary interest to the people of Abbeville county and of the np-conntrv. What S> are the effects of the late frosts? Have the high winds and the heavy rains done much damatre? These questions have Imen anxiously asked of late and the answers are more or less unfavorable. As for the frosts, and ground-freezes, thero is no amine cnev nave uuvriv u?? stroyed the fruit crops and delaved by ?ev?ral weeks the appearance of spring vegetables on our tnbles. The damase they caused to the flowers and shrubs too wm very great. Shrubs look as if the hot-breathed sirocco of the desert had swept ovor them and scorched them. Even hardv box-wood borders and enonvmous hedges are brown with frost-bite. The wheat crop has suffered serious!v in some quarters; and generally speaking both field and garden crops" are some weeks later than usual. The trees that usuallv put forth their leaves rapidly were at a standstill for two weeks, and in i many cases the tender buds were nipped. It is doubted whether the mulberry trees, will survive the effect of the frost. Then came the heavy rains and hich winds of the last nisrht davs inst when all I hands were busy in field and garden. It I was soon too wet to nloutrh, and farm-1 work was temporarily suspended. I A? to health, the cold winds, and damp j weather, with occasional warm days have j r* produced more than the ordinary mim-# her of eases of cold, and affections of the throat. The "grip" has been prevalent, and latterlv a mild form of ophthalmia has made the wearing of green and blue! gogglos not uncommon. Sad Death or a Child?Warning toi Nurse*. A report of a distressing case of tho death of a little child of Mr. Row let t, tel??<raph operator, conies to us from Hodges. It seems that the nurse, who has had several years experience as a nurse, had laid the child to sleep under too much cover, its face being covered with the blanket. Home time afterward, it was found in the agonies of death from suffocation, and it diod in a few minutes, The child was about four months old. The community | sympathizes deeply with the afflicted fattier and mother. Colonel. Recently in looking over the printed minutes of a mooting of the dignitaries of a religious denomination we were struck with the number of "Colonels" that have gotten into the church. Would it not for once be a good idea for the embassadors of the Prince of Peace to dotl tlieir military titles wmie aucnuing the Court of Jesus Christ? Now that livory stable keepers, bar tenders, ami waiters are so frequently dubbed "Colonel," we submit that there is a class k of geinlcmeu in South Carolina who ' should not allow themselves to be so adflressod. Grand Conckbt.?Wo are informed thai a grand concert of vocal and instrumental music will be given in the Court Jiotiso on Friday night, 2oth of April. Prof. Gonzalez, the eminent pianist, organist and vocalist, will be assisted by ?oine of our local amateurs. The concert promises to be a tirst-elass one. Our i people should all turn out and atteud on I Friday night. Kkv. Mr. Jefferson of the A. M. K. vhurch al this place is a good man and a 1 gjod preacher. lie ministers to a selfsupporting and well conducted congregation, whose liberality churchwards put* that of many white congregations t i shaiue. This pastor's influence is not vxerted in politics but in other and wiser directions?towards forming a good templar's society, a young men's Christian association, and the like. They have au organ and a good choir, and their singing is very good. The Methodist Quarterly Meeting has been held here every day "since last Saturday morning, with "services twice a day." conducted by Presiding Elder I'ritchard. The services have been much enjoyed by our peoyle, and every morning and evening the attendance has been large, and the Interest has Ueen manifest. Thb Ladies Parsonage Safety have decided favor with a May party on the night ot' the 1st. They are making every necessary arrangement and we predict the occasion will be a grand one The funds accruing from the supper will bo devoted to a benevolent purpose exclusively. Reese, jeweller, and Mr. Smith, fainter, have between them invented a very ingenious hinge for wiudow-shutI tors* which enables the shutters to be opened or shut from the inside. They have applied for a patent. We have seen their model and it seems to work admirably. Rev. J. 0. Linosay, D. D., will conduct religious services at Rocky River, commencing next Saturday. The communion will be administered on Sunday. This it is expected will be an interesting meeting.- A re-union of the old members will take place. A whole week has passed without the| appointment of a Colonel or a Brigadier. Not even a Major has been hatchea out. The raw material is nearly used up. Wondering at the cause of so great an influx of visitors, on a Friday, we thought at first it was Saturday, but it wasn't; then j that it was JSaloiay, but it wasn't: then J that it must be the "grand spring open| ing" by our- merchants: wrong again. Itev. John Kershaw. The Rev. John Kershaw, who has labored in this town its rector of Trinity church for several years, preached his farewell sermon* to his congregation last Sunday, preliminary to his departure for Beaufort. Kershaw will leave Abbeville tomorrow, going to visit friends in Camden and other parts of the State before entering upon his new charge at Beaufort in May. Last Sunday morning Presiding Elder Pritchard preached an excellent sermon in tho Methodist church at this place. Considerable interest has been manifested in the services whk-h have been eonductcd in that church for several days. But few of our citizens have availed themselves of the cheap rates to visit Charleston. This is accounted for in the fact that our people are exceedingly busy planting their crops.
