Ill mm 11 ! I ami The Press and Banner. I' ABBEVILLE, S. C. ?;V ~~ z " By IIUGII WILSON iV; \V. L". BENET. ~ * ? ----Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1878. Governor Hamptca Elreteil !'luted Slates Senator.?Ilis I.eg Amputated. r\ ,,ryw^ liv telCPTnil] from Co wur liuwi iiv-*?.-? .'j - __ lumbia announces the unanimous eVction of Governor Hampton to the oilier of United States Senator. This mows will l;c welcomed by all our readers tins morn"V' ing, and by all the friends < f South Carolina iti and out of the State. The ofiler J, of Senator is the well-earned reward o' our distinguished-"Chief Magistrate, lor the full enjoyment of which Al?l?ovi!le i Cocuiy wishes him speedy and complete restoration to health. Tne same telegram which brings this glad news dashes the public joy with th? siul fact that after four weeks of intense suffering, heroically endured, hoping ' , against hope to save the fractured limb, ie at last Governor Hampton's l<g has been amputated below the knee. This was deemed necessary to save his life. Latest account* report his uoruilion as favorable. The prayors and sympathies of the whole people are with the distinguished sullerer. W: ? - Three Dollars I'er Dic:n. One of the healthiest signs in our present Genoral Assembly is its unmistakablo tendency to economy in money and time, which is much money. Not only are short sessions the cry, but in harmony >viith that note conies the sound ol 'Three Dollars Per Diem," which is li.;e music to the ears of the "poor tax-payers.'' Wo have said our say on this matter of reduction of pay, often enough, but it will be forgiven for giving below the views expressed thereon by "M." in the editorial letter of the A ndemon Intellffaicer. We say amen to them. 'Dr. Jchn Wilson, of our delegation, has introduced a bill fixing the per diem of members at three dollars per day, ami there is very kittle doubt that it will bt adopted, and thus the Legislature havinj. cut down their own compensation, will be enabled to. curtail other expenses without subjecting themselves to criticism. Three dollars a day is a smal! compensation, but it is sufficient to secure the services of as good men as can bo procured at higher salaries, and therafore it is all that the Suite ought to pay. The reduction will make the position a inore honorable one than it woutd be with a hiirh salary, for the experience ol every State has boon that high salaries for members of the Legislature brings Into co in petition for the olBee a class oi , aspirants who care moro for the money than for the honor of representing thei: constituents. ??> The Columbia Daily Register. Wo cannot refrain from complimenting the Register on its improved appearance. It is now a large-sized daily, of quite a metropolitan appearance. We congratulate our Columbia co-temporary on it* healthy condition that justifies so great an enlargement, and we bespeak for it all the increased good custom and prosperity which its enterprise and ability deserve. Nor is this the only change. To its editorial staff, already in the ncrson of Col. Jas. H. Hoyt gifted with great power and with a ready pen, it has added, simultaneously with its enlargement, Col. J. W. jL Pope, so well known throughout South Carolina as one who wields tlu *? pon of a ready writer which in bis liatul> i* the free lance of a fearless knight. In t'ie Greenville Daily News and the {Speights' (Spartanlrarg Daily, C<>I. Pope has made his mark as a graceful writer and a clear-headed guide of public opin i.?n. The Itcgistei' is fortunate 111 us editors, and tbe editors are fur tun ate in their journal. Success will reward them. .<s>.?. BjrS News From Columbia. We yield a huge part of our editorial space to the long and interesting editorial letters from Columbia, which our readers will find in this issue of tbe /Yew and Banner. The indefatigable senior editor is always instant in season and out of season, and although in Columbia and Charleston on pleasure be is bent, he stlil has a frugal mind and a sense of editorial duty. Our readers will bo glad _ to see the emphatic testimony Le bears ?6$to tbe high character, great ability, and ?' ceaseless assiduity which he found characterizing our Abbeville delegation in ^ the General Assembly. This is as it , ought to bo, as it used to be, and as it klways will be, if we send thither representatives worthy of old Abbeville. > s V Southern Christian Advocate. v , - This time-honored and favorite organ -of our Methodist friends now comes to ?" na ereatlv enlarged and imnroved. Its typographical improvement is due to its new and enterprising publishers, Messrs. ^ Walker, Evans <k Cogswell, and wo are / glad to see that this religious journal is again to be published in Charleston, the place wlieae it first saw the light.
