As soon as the result of the nomination jwas made known the friends of Gen. McGowan expressed their dissatisfaction, some of whom we are informed immerii- K ately withdrew from the meeting. After Dj_ which the mooting nominated J. F. C. ^ DoPre for School Commissioner; J. F. Lyon, for Probate Judge; Jacob Miller, * G. M. Mattison, R. A. McCaslan for j?n County Commissioners. 1 V . We wore not present at tho meeting of me the Club, and cannot vouch for the ex- ^ actneaa of the report, but give it upon in- jjei formation which is eenerallv accepted as rrK correct. The opposition to General McGowau at Abbeville is supposed to havo js g been tally represented. tJrj; The weak opposition, only nine, as fic{ well as well as toe prompt and decided t^e action of the gentlemen who have withdrawn from the club, show moat conclu ively the real hold which he has upon the hearts of his neighbors, who know Lira beet. By common consent, tho wishes of Ninety-Six, Lowndeaville and other sections are to be respected and we 1 seo no good reason why theso localities ?re should disregard the almost unanimous OQ1 . ~ wisb|of Abbeville. According to the rule ad; of geographical politics, Abbeville is en- oth titled to a Representative, and our Th< nominee should receive that considera- ccn tion from others which we accord to con them. Abbeville has not dictated to any elnb whom they shall nominate. We have only expressed our own preference. T At the proper time shall show our respect me for the wishes of others. nig anc -- ? . atU The Abbeville Democratic tiaD. mR We are indebted to the courtesy of Mr. ^lo< W. A. S Last Monday afternoon, Mr. John nox, one of the principal merchants of J La town, together with Mrs. Knox, and r sister, Mrs. Motte, went driving in t i baggy. As they were descending the * il beyond the residence of W. H. Par- c r, Esq., in the direction of Long Cane n lurch, the harness broke or became dis- ti atod in some wav. The vehicle ran o on the horse. The horse instantly b jiped into the gulley on the side of the s< id which is ton or "twelve feet deep, u rying the vehicle and occupants after tl n, nearly killing a whole family. Mrs. jtte's Bkull was fractured, and her a lole body and liinbs from the shoulders si ? paralyzed from injuries received, a rs. Knox's injuries wcro prin- V ally internal. The buggy having C len on her in sotno way "or having v ssed over h^r body, inflicting injuries r lich it is feared may prove fatal. Yes- t< day her symptoms" were not at all sat- tl nctory. Sir. Knox himself was much ti inaed"about the head, the thii?h and the fi and has suffered greatly since the ac- v, lent. cj \.t the time of the occurencc some ne- tt ) children were playingon the grounds w Ittle way off, who reported the aeci- s< lit to thctr mother who ran with all pos- a; ile speed to their relief, but Mr. Knox's si 11 dog which had followed the buggy Iold not allow her to approach to ren- n r needed relief. The fact was then re- ai rted to Mr. Parker's family who at fc oe hurried to the scene. Mr.'and Mrs. oi iox were romoved from the gulley and w iced in their buggy, when the colored C >ple who had assembled drew it home, fl s. Motte being in an unconscious state w s placed on a litter and carried to Mr. Si iox's residence. ir )rs. Templeton and Parker were im- m diately summoned, and ever since cl /e been untiring in their effort* to ro- s< re the sufferings of the unfortunates, fr e neighbors appreciating the condition ai i household, every member of which tl to great a sufferer, have been unremit- a 5 in their attentions and kindly of- w :s. An idea is gaining some currency ia his county that a moment's reflection vill convinco any one is false and mishievous in its tendency, namely, that in lominating candidates'for tho Legislate reference must bo had to the section ftho county in which they live; that Ab eville Court House must have a rcpreentative, the lowor Savannah one, the ipper Savannah another, and so on n rough. If this plan of choosing candidates be dopkxl und persisted in, Abbeville will r>on be degraded from what it has been, nd ought to be into,'a third-rate County, ^hat prescriptive right has Abbeville Ourt House or Ninety-Six, or Donaldsille, or Bordeaux, or Lowndsvlllo to a epresentative? Has it come down ) this, that a man must owe to le accident of his residence his elovaion to an office of honor? The idea is as ilse as sin, it is monstrous, it is at war ith tho cardinal principles of republi in government. We do not ciect a man > honor him or to please the section in rhich ho lives. Why should one ropresntative be elected from Cokesbury and aother from Due West, if Cedar Springs tiould happon to have two better men ? iet every man ask himself, "who will lost worthily represent us?" Let him nswer the question honestly and vote >r those men, and we need have no fear f the result. If this course bo pursued e shall be able to send a delegation to olumbia next Fall that will not only roect credit upon Abbeville County, but ill promote the interests of the whole tato. Nothing in politics is ho debasig and demoralizing as geographical ominations. They causo rings and iquos to be formed; they promote . homing and wire-pulling; they are the ultful source 01 sectional jealousies and limosities. Lot us select our best men, ioso who aro honest, intelligent, and inependent; who are acquainted with the ante of their county; who can and will ork most faithfully and efficiently for ie good of the whole State. Let no locality presume to offer a man r the suffrages of the people unless he the peer of any other in the country in lese respects, and if one club can offer x Ruch men we can do no better than to ect them all. Let us repudiate the idea ' restraining any club to one candidate of electing ono number from a section allhazzaras reguardless of his qualifiitions. FAIR PLAY. Judge Mackey.
