As they came to i j the head of tin' lane from .Toe s house which | opened on the road thes- young men were tr.iv-1 elinii, Jamesltfiaginorefiiiiiili.tr with the ' - . ,i..t,t nrottosed to his brother to j " liuitiru i?i hh r. . remain i? the road at the head of the lane tin-; til he would ride down to the house and see M Joe. Kugcno remained in the road while t James rode down t lie lane to the gate in front I of the colored man's house, and called him! ^ out. They soon got into a hot discussion and " high words were passed. The nogro man j . cu led to his wite to bring him his gun. | James told the negro that he was unarmed, | and ho turned to leave. Joe followed him ;" about a hundred yards down the lane, when j 1 he pulled Taggart off his horse. and a scuffle ensued. Eugene Taggart either hearing orh seeing what was going on ran to the rescue of I <] his brother and at his approach to the con-1 tending parties Joe tiirew a 'tone at him, ? whereupon hedrew his pistol and tired with-1, out effect. Joe and Kugene immediately I closed In a violent struggle for the possession ( of the pistol, during which the pistol was!" dischargedoace without doing injury. An hour or so afterwards he was jbund with I his haul on the hearth, dead. Axotmkk account, based on the testimony [, of Toe Collier's wife, is that the young men j' came to the door, called Joe out, had high words about the debt, said they would have it j v out of him or whip it out of Film:?that Joe" wentout in the lane, to tight itout with them L and was shot dead. At the Coroner's inquest next day, it was! ascertained that the skull had not been even S fractured by the bullet from the pistol?the I bullet heinc flattened by coming In contact with the skull. We understand that a most ' searching medical examination failed to discover any fracture in the skull or any marks )< of concussion in the hrain. At the Inquest held before S. W. Cochran, f, coroner, the following was the verdict render ed: "That Joe Collins came to his death from a I ^ pistol-shot wound, (pistol being fired in the hands of Kugene Taggarti and improper I c treatment afterwards that brought on apo-1 plexy causing death." It is said that when!, the last shot was tired the deceased negro had ; the barrel of the pistol ik his hand. The! Sunday A">th inst., was tlio third anniversary of the Methodist Sunday School Missionary w Society. Prof. Duncan of W'oflbri College had been invited topreach the usual anniverk:iry sennon. He is a young divine of excellent scholarship and of uncommon power as a pulpit orator. His sermon 011 Sunday forenoon was au eloi|Uent appeal in behalf of be- j nellcenceasditrerent from benevolence. He) tore the veil from the face of that easy and I common kind of '.'oodness which never goes beyond well-wishing ami earnestly urged his p hearers to cultivate that rarer and higher {', tooduess which is distinguished by welldoimr. It was a powerful and impressive discourse. . . In the afternoon he delivered an address to the children of the Sunday School, and there-1 in proved himself as able to interest the >> youthful luiud as to instruct their eiders. . The Society has raised about lifty-tlve dol- 1 J, lars this year, entirely by the offerings of the j f, children of the Sunday School. In the evening a large congregation ussem- j , bled again to iiear the distinguished I'rofcs- Jr sor. The usual evening services in the Pres-1 J. byterian (.'liureii were suspended mi Sunday j!* in compliment to Prof, Duncan, ami Rev. Mr.'}' Martin's congregation was numerously repre-1 | resented. The learned gentleman took no I text, but announced as the subject of hts dis-1 course '"Christian Kdueation.'' It is a trite j S subject which almost every public speaker ' -.V has handled, but Prof. Duncan treated it with I J, a freshness ami visor that made it seem now If., ami unexplored territory. His ideas about v the necessity for Christian Education inii; hou?es, schools, and colleges, were just and!', right, and he enforced them in plain, forcible, | and telling language.
