Tho black angel ol' tleath has just visited our community and taken as its prey into l'anuliso the spirit of 0110 who had a welcome place in tho hearts of all who knew him. Welcome, because he possessed so many manly and worthy traits of character, that ' were you to sec portrayed a sketch of all his virtues and I j,.inn tli!it wiiM v?rv short vou ? would (suppose that the ham I of the eulogist had penned nothing but encomiums on pages swept by me wane: of Uio magician. Iu tliu eeremonics of sorrow and in tho expression of honor to the dead the downcast laces and moistened eyes bespoke the emotions of tho heart in language more expressive and truthful than an lie evinced by words, how strongly tiie deceased was united with chords of love and friendship to the hearts of us all. lie had no faults for tho hostile hand of tho carping critic to unveil, but even the laudations of a friendly eulogist eould not exaggerate the beauties of his noble nature. There is no dark stain on the name of him who has just left us that might have elicited the desire of his friends that the mantle of charity should bo east over his grave. For his deportment in life forestalled any such nesessity. It is exceedingly gratifying to me that my lirst tribute of respect in this mannor should be to tho memory of one so justly desorving. j It was my good fortune to know the deceased for many years, and I can say j of him as I ean not sav of any other per son of my acquaintance, that I do not be-! liove he had an enemy. Tho slow dull attack of typhoid fever which besot Mr. Chalmers for several weeks proved that his youthful form was not equal to its poisonous inlluonoc, and that tho sickle of time is notthrust among mortals to reap merely tho ripo blades of grass, but cuts down the young and strong as well. The Abbeville Rifles and Silver Cornet Band of which ho was respectively a member escorted tho remains of the deceased from tho family rosidenco to the Methodist Church on tho morning of the fourth instant, followed by a very large crowd of relatives and friends, when the burial service was road; thenco the remains were carried to the cemetery at Long Cane and there intem'cd. Tho crowd of sympathizing friends was more numerous* than was over seen on any similar occasion in Abbeville. When each one of us realize that we shall not seo his manly form nor hear his genial voice again, a shudder involuntarily steals over us, for we know that Ills loss is not mat ui HIM muiuy, munu, but is most grievously l'elt by the whole community.
