I a?P? . ..n ? m ? I The Press and Banner. | Wednesday, April 11, 1877.' I I1- r-* [ The Wedding Lnst Week. Tuesday of la<t week almost the: entire village assembled at Trinity 1 ..r i It'llUrUII IU ? 11 IIC31 l?IV liU|MKIin wi iju^enco B. (iary, Esq., ami Miss Eliza! Tustin. The church had been beauti-1 fully decorated and brilliancy lighted, f while I he pews were tilled with the J grace and beauty and manly valor of! Abbeville. At eight o'clock the bride proceeded up the aisle to tlie altar.' where the Rev. Mr. Kershaw united the loving couple in the holy bonds of j matrimony according to the custom of; the Episcopal church. At the conclu-j sion of the ceremony the invited quests repaired to the residence of Mr. i and Mrs. Tustin, the bride's parents, where all were entertained in the most elegant manner. The bride always beautiful and attractive, was if possible, eveu more chaining on this occasion than ever berore. Miss Tustin j by her lovable character as well as| by her grace and culture had won thei admiration of all and made herself a general favorite. Her marriage leaves a niche in the circle in which j she moved that will not l*e filled. Mr.: Gary is the luckiest young lawyer ofj this*Bar and whose energy and apidi-i cation to business promise to brine him to the higher rounds in the lad-! der of fame, as jus goou iooks uiiu moral worth have brought him thej greatest felicity at Hymen's court. We wish the happy couple the greatest success in life while we almost envy the groom of his good luck in ob-|( taining so beautiful and so accomplished a wife. liesides a majority of the divinities , of Abbeville, a number of others from ! a distance were present, and lent their charms to an occasion which will be remembered with so much pleasure by | all whose privilege it was to partici-i fiate in the festivities of this most de-j ightfu! occasion. We will be excused !; if we mention the names of a few from a distance. Miss Kannik Bradlkv, of Long Cane, a charming brunette, wps one!, of the stars of the evening. She wore' ?n elegant silk with su|>erb ecru lace ', over-dress, draped with flowers. v . Miss Lt*da Pattkkson,of Hodges,! Was one of the most brilliant beauties of the evening and was much admir-j, ed. A rich velvet bodice, silk skirt I combined with some fleecy material,! the name of which is unknown t:> this j deponent, was worn witli fine effect, j Miss Makik (Jakv, dressed in an f 01 maculate swiss, was as fresli ;ls a new j blown rose, as modest as a violet and as pretty as a pink. Miss Ballik Latimkk, ot Lowti/ desville, in a stylish dress of black, j with hergraceof manner and charm-; ingcharacter won the admiration of! Sill. I Mic? PeSausscre, of "the city by I the Sea," wa-i handsomely dressed,j, and graced the evening l?y her presence. Hiie is a lovely and sprightly i maiden who led eantive many hearts. ; Miss LeGal, of Pue West, whose , accomplishments, beauty of |?erson ?nd elegance of manner would be her jiasspci t to u royal eouit, appeared in an elegant combination dress, '.villi! sweeping train. Miss \Vatkins, of Richmond, i wore an elegant pink silk princess dress, which for stvle and Iflfcauty would b*ve done credit to the leading * Parisian car ntua-maker. She was be-1 seiged by hosts of admirers contending for her amiles. Among the gentlemen who were; present aud basked in the light of I 4>rUUaMteyef< w?re Me.a*ra. B. M. Mc-J Gee, of Lhie Went; Waller Mars, of: Calhoun's Mil's; Richard Quarles,! ?f Ninety-Six; G. C. Bradley, Wm. Wideman, of Long Cane ; Ernest \ Gary, Augusta G? ; A. Latimer,1 William Young, John Young, of! Lowmlesville ; all of whom, we pre-1 BUiiie, are able to blow their own horns or in case of their inability to do so.] we will beg to be excused just now.! We are out of breath. I Dae West?Riot at Wimbushville--j Resistance of Hampton's Author- j to sue to Kick Against tbe Pricks. The quiet town of Due West was} thrown into a state of unwonted excitement last Wednesday by the out?agcous behavior of the negroes of its suburban village, Wimbushville. Trial Justice Young, holding ofllce under Hampton, had issued a search-warrant 1 di*eci?d against several cabius in thai 1 African metropolis. The reasons' therefor are the following: A good many rohl>ers of meat-houses and come libs had occurred recent- ' ly, and all about the same time, and 1 there were indications that an organ- 1 ized gang of marauders were conduct- j ing their midnight raids with some; i omart of action. SusnL'iot'-i circum-.? stance* pointed towards some of the I mo-'e prominent sable citizens of VVini*!{ hushville, but for some time no relia- ' hie clue could be laid hold of. On ' Sunday a week ago. an anonymous letter wa? found in the Due West post omee. n was* eviaeimy me namiwriting of a nesjro, and of a netrro tothat wa*- Jetermined togo "behind the returns." ft gave information con- , cerning the depredators, and gave the following as the names of the guilty pai ties. Cyrus Wimbnsh, Jess?> WimUusli, Ned Win bush, ilen Johnson and Wilson Cowan. The information thus mysteriously furnished confirmed suspicious already enteriaiued, and Trial Justice Young seut a po?se of five deputies to Wimbushville with a search warrant. They found Cyrus Wim'.ush at the door of his home and told him their business. Cyrus very politely said, "All right gentlemen" aod walked into his house, and presently came out with two pistols belted around him and one in his hand. He bc;an to curse and to swear, flourished his pistol and dared the authority of a Trial Justice of Hampton's making. The women of his hoiie>ehold opened their foul mouths and tired volleys of the most blasphemous oaths at the J deputies. Cyrus' insolence waxed ag-| gressive. He pointed his pistol at Mr. jaWs Todd. The latter seized C'y by the throat and nearly choked him. As soon as Todd's Angers relaxed their grasp, the nejrro raised a yell that summoned all the Inhabitants of Wimbushville to come and help him. The proximity of a numberof negroes! ct Sklit../it* tuna (ha ; clfj^a^cu *it laisiu^ o viiii * iut secret of Cy's bravery. There Jcamej at once forty negroes and surrounded! the small body of deputies. Emboldened by the timely reinforcemeut, Cyrus and Jesse VVimbush behaved in the most insulting manner towards the deputies; and the black viragos belabored them with stout clubs and severely injiued one or two of thein.| Mr. Harkne*-< received some cruel j blows. Against so many armed and infuriated negroes the young men! wfe i >werless. They kr.ew their! lives we-e in danger, and though they j were determined t? sell them dear,' they prudently rt*olved not to take; the in 'alive and fire the first shot. Fortunately they were able after a; while to withdraw frciu Wimbushville and return to Due \V'M. Next day Cyrus and Jes?e, lushed with victory, and aoeoni'ia^'fcd by their wi vr?, marche.l bo.nlv through Due We tin-! soien.iy exhibiting piston strapped on , their pe.ons and ed iting at and de-i fyinir Ha<npion:s authority. As next in guilt they arrested old #I*eter Winibush the father of the rascals, Cyrus' wife and sister who had used th?ir tongues and clubs so vigorously on Wednesday, and two! negro preachers John Donald and j Dave Pressley. It is a notaole fact* that in all riotous disturbances' negro 1 preachers are sure to be present aiding and abettiug. These five were! brought to ttie Court House jail last ( Saturday guarded by fourteen armed j men. This numerous escort was ?ent ! because of threats of rescue. It was | thought proper to guard against any . attempt to rescue the prisoners or way-, lay ilie escort. The two Wimbushes! are understood to have gone down to Columbia, probably to appear before| his ex-excellency Chamberlain, whom though dead they j'et adore.!' They will soon discover how vain it is to put their trust in princes that have!' been dethroned. Our Sheriff knows j! something of their whereabouts and ' between hi.n and Captain Radcliffe, jl Cyrus and Jesse will tind it as hard!1 to escape as if they were "between I the devil and the deep sea." We hope N r\.. . ?% *!! monnnro 1 i uur i/UC *? Iitc-inio mil umuu^v i ? their matters well and bring all thei! offenders to Justice. All concerned in i this open defiance of law ought to be 11 lodged in jail and punished as this j < heinous offence deserves and justice! I demands. j< The Lowndcsrille Prisoners. There is a division of sentiment In this County in reference to the justiee or propriety of executing all the ( Lowndesville prisoners. It is now be- j j lieveil that the Governor will u(ion ;, implication of prominent citizens L commute the sentence of five or sixl, uf them to imprisonment for life or L for a term of years. It is said that L n majority of the jury consented to a I ( verdict of murder in the case of allofj, them with the understanding that >, they recommend executive clemency j< in behalf of a portion of them. JudgeL Cooke at one time thought it proper to recommend the commutation of the! sentence of six of them to imprison-r nient, but we are not informed as to : what his views are at present, mere j will certainly be a banging on the ' :!Oth, but it is highly probable that tbe Governor will commute tbe sentence i>f six of them. The Governor no doubt feels able to act generously after obtaining so great a political victory, and tor this reasou, if for no other, lie will be inclined to show to the colored people that he is their friend and disposed to execute justice in mercy. Tne Governor's conservative feelings have b^en so conspicuous throughout the whole of our late campaign and in the more recent struggle in which he won so complete a victory that some are led to the belief (hat he is anxious for an opportunity to show bitnself generous. Learning to Write. We had the pleasure of examining specimensof the handwriting of Prof. Perry's scholars last Saturday, and to say that their improvement is beyond any reasonable expectation could not eonvey a just idea of their advancement. Tbe specimens compared were those given by the scholars beforetak- % ing-lessons and those given by them to tbe Professor last week. Among the gentlemen who have made marked v progress we would mentiou Messrs. 1 J. 8. Hammond, J. Allen Smith, * William K. Bell, E. L. Wilson, E. F. 1 Parker, aud others. Ail the ladies have made such marked improvement t that we learn a number of them have f determined to write to their gentle- J men friends to return any notes of c theirt they may have on band, with a ? AfKiiro mora rri*o11 ] V promise lU^ncvmcioutuiv , written. A beautiful note has a won- L derful effect on the lieart, and none!\ understand this better than the ladies, f No better investment can be made ( with a small amount of money than i in writing lessons, which will do one L good for life. Prof. Perry also exhibi-L ted to us his certificate of graduation . in Eastman College, New York as f well as some most excellent specimens of pen drawing. He is fully competent to teach drawing, bookkeeping | and penmanship in all their branches. \ * When such a fine opportunity is af- ic forded to our young people it seems to j }be a pity that any should neglect to 1 improve it. Take the lessons atid if you are dissatisfied Prof. Perry will re- J fund your money. i . .. i i Death oi Mrs. Dr. Templeton. t It becomes our duty to clironicle the death of Mrs. Sarah M. Templeton, 5 the wife of Dr. W. L. Templeton, oi c this place, aftpr an illness of about a two weeks. After lying unconscious t for several days she breathed her last t on the morning of the 9th, and was a buried at Upper Long Cane Cemetary, on yesterday. She was the daughter j af ira and.Susan Griffin. She married 1843, and leaves three children and p i husband to mourn her death. f Mrs. Templeton was highly esteem- a edin this community, and her genial, sompanionable nature, had endeared k l?er to a large number of friends, who j. will longchtrish her memory. a We inadvertantly omitted several o items last week, und among which was to notice the opening of a new and splendid stock of assorted goods ,j by our friend Mr. T. P. Quarles who e has been out of business for the past j, several months. We are truly glad to ( see Inm again on his feci; in business circles, and we doubt not that his old customers will find it to their advantage to give him their custom as in the S days of yore. His goods embrace every conceivable article and his prices ^ are as low as could be asked. His bubusiness tact, energy and application ^ to business and strict integrity assure ^ his success. ' j Messrs. W. T. McDonald & Co., have just opened one of the nicest and most select stocks of goods ever brought to this place. Mr. McDonald j is a good merchant and his popular , manners warrant success. He can make a man haouier while relieving him of his money than any man we ! I know. We will not attempt to 1 enumerate his goods on hand/ Go to 1 see him and lie will be sure to sell you more goods for a little money I than you ever dreamed of getting. | Mks. If there is < any hard looking cases after this notice his heen published it will make . no difference lo the general public I whether they ever marry or not. < Get your goods at this store and you i are sure to get a beau or bow,?we , have just now forgotten how to spell., it. H Miss Jane Ramey has a handsome | store where she has just opened a., magnificent stock of the most beauti-! ] ful millinery which lias ever been h brought to Abbeville and she is selling | her goods at the lowest prices.
