It anybody believes that Abbeville county is not in earnest about paying the Hampton tax let hiiu cast his eyi over the following long list who have paid since our last issue. The high and low, the white and colored* all pay cheerfully. Xo body has been dragooned iuto this business. The Governor's special agent, t'apt. Perrin on Monday last remitted the lasi of-So.OOO collected for State purpose? while he has safely deposited $2,i>00 foi county purposes subject to the draft of the County Commissioners. Up tc last Saturday night fourteen hundred and forty-threeofourcitizens had paid, about one hundred and fifty of whom are colored* All the whites and forty colored, at Due West have paid. At Due West the colored people are ahead of the colored people in any other section of the County. The largest individual tax-payer ol the county is Col. James Edward Calhoun, of the Savannah side. His (en percent, of the State taxes amounted to $113.00, and his one mill of county tax for county purposes was ?50.00. When as cautions men as Col. Calhoun pay, the rest may have no hesitation in"coining forward. Pressly being the purchaser. .Ov Dfntli an Azcd Citizen. j On Saturday last Mr. Arthur Erwin |an old and respectable citizen of this J county, at the age of SI years, died at ' the residence of his son, Mr. Malcomb | Krwin, the owner of the famous Krwin j mills oil Saluda River. Mr. Krwin's j home was about seven miles south ' west of Abbeville, but a few weeks before he died, he went Lo see his son, where he took sick and died. Mr. Krwin was a native of county Antrim, Ireland, anil immigrated to this county in 1848, where lie has lived ever j since. He wis a stone mason, and as good a mechanic as we have ever had. j He was an excellent citizen and was ' noted for his industry and strict integ' rity and conscientiousness in the disi charge of all his duties towards his fellow-man. The people of Li(\vvmesville will never he satisfied for the sentence* of the murderers of Allen to be commuted. We hope our merchants will, for a' season, cease their insatiate clamor for! advertising space in our precious col-! umns. The overwhelming rush ofj patronage of this kind is what causes so many country newspapers to die a premature death. Our advertising space is limited, but we will try to accommodate all, gentlemen; but come one at a time. We are wearied with the rush, and fain would rest. Come one at a time, and commence coming that way as soon as possible. On (he night of the 30tlv ult, about 0 o'clock, the house of Mr. Lewis E. 1 lolloway (former Postmaster at Ninety-Six, who resided about 8 miles from that place on the old Charleston road) was discovered to be on fire. Mr. llolloway was about 55 years of age, and j lived entirely alotie. When the nearest neighbors arrived, the body of Mr. H. was found on the floor of the burning building, but could not be reached on account of the fire. Upon examination it was found that he had been murdered with an axe in tho yard, near the houso, and his body dragged and placed in the house which was fired. Trial Justice John C. "Walker was called, who immediately summoned a jury of iuquest who gave a verdict in accordance with the above facts. Evidence was also elicited which caused suspicion on Cush Harrison and Anderson Davis, colored, who have been arrested and will bo tried to-day, February 5. Cush is a suspicious character, and was one of Cham Demurs JJepucy uimtd ouues marshals at one of the boxes in Edgefield county at the November election. Mr. Holloway was noted for his quiet inoffensive disposition, and the community are horrified at this hellish net of murder and incendiarism. Ninety-Six, February G. The trial of the negroes, Cu?h Harrison and Anderson Davis, began yesterday and is still going on. The evidence is entirely circumstantial, but is intensifying as the trial progresses. A pair of pants and a pair of shoes were found in C'ush's houseon Sunday with blood on them, lie has a wounded foot on which he wears a ehoo made partly of carpeting. The track of this shoe was found near where the murder ivas committed. I have not heard the details of the evidence against Davis, but it is said to be fully as strong as that against Cush Harrison.
