The Pr$ss and Banner. Wednesday, Dec. 20,1876. Death or A. C. Hawthorn, Eiq. It becomes our duty to chronicle the death of our old friend Andrew C. Hawthorn, E*q., whjch event occurred at his residence in Due West on Thursday night of last week. Mr. Hawthorn was born near Due "West on the head waters of Long Cane creek In the year 1800 and concequeatly waa seven'y-six years of age. He grew up to manhood and after living a long and useful life, died within a few miles of tl?e place of his birth. In early life htr married and moved to Due VVest wher? he engaged for many years in merchandising, keephntAl aitH farmlnc. and was so well known for his many commendable triits of character that he was about thirty years ago, elected Sheriff of Abbeville county. Mr. Hawthorn was a practical man and successful in whatever he undertook,'and at the breaking out of-the war he had accumulated a very considerable fortune. In the last few years of his life he however met with several misfortunes which stripped him of the result of a lifetime of Industrious toil. At the clone of the war his negroes were emancipated. Soon after the realization of this great loss some unknown person set Are to several thousand . dollars worth of cotton which he had ginned, baled and packed awav in an outhouse on hi? [ remises; & hlUe later still his large and com mod ions hotel was devoured by the consuming eJemeut, and the oid man and his fumily were literally turned "wnt of tJoors." -Creditors now pressed and he gave up everything he had left to them, and the old homestead was*?i!d, to satisfy their Cravings. At this great change in hbi'forluue.he was not discouraged, but l^e <anu his good Wife |x?ssessed a heart for every fate ami went to work with Che energy of younger people, and buou built another, hut a smaller house, and again seemed to lie as hnpa soever. A good :man is pone, and his place in the county will not mhmi be filled by so! good a wan. Unearthing the Dead. During tlie freshet of last June Savannah River swelled iteyond its| banks and swept over some low lands on the plantations of Dr. J. A. Gibert. Dr. W. Tennant and Mr. W. H. tVike in this County, and jn one plaee | washed away the soil to a sufficient depth to expose the bodies of a nnm-| berof Indians, who had been buried' in, to us, a hitherto unknown grave- i yard. The ske'eton of a body which had! been carefully (milt around with stone 1 was found in a |?erfect state of preservation, with every (tone in its proper place, while an innumerable number of human bones were scattered everywhere. We regret to hear of the death of Mr. C. T. Latimer, at his re?i<len?e near Lowmle*ville,.on Friday last, of heart di*ea>e. Mr.'Latimer was one of the best men it) the County and one of the most useful citizens in the community. He possessed in a large degree many noble and*manly traits of character, and was especially noted for his conscientious discharge of every christian duty. He was all his life a devoted Methodist, and was one of t'ne chief supports of the jrosj>el in his own church. He was highly re<peeted by all who knew him, but it was in the family circle that his real worth was fully appreciated. He was a man of line feelings and of a honest, frank cast of character which won the love ami Jaffuction of a household, over whom his influence was unbounded. A mule belonging to Lewis Allen, a very innocent and honest colored ciiizenof this county, got it* owner into trouble last week, and the aforesaid darkey is now stopping at the Hotel d'Afrique, awaiting the coming of the Circuit Judge and the {*tate'tf 6ol ichor to be discharged from the damaging imputation of appropriating to his own use three hundred jwninds of pork, belonging to Mr. J. C. Douglass. The pork was abstracted from M r. Douglass* riwat houee one night last week, while he wa* iti the arms of Morpheus dreaming sweet visions of the savory saus.-age and juicy hams which were to greet his eye* on the morrow. Next morotng, after recovering from the shock sustained at the loss, the first question to be answered was, "Who did it?" and the unfortunate gentleman, once the haopy possessor of savory sauspages and juicy hams might just as well to have enquired "who struck Billy Putterson ?'* and lie would huve been as likely to have received the desired information in one ease as in the other. - Searching about, however, for traces of the thief, and for evidence whicli might lead to detection, he found a mule had been hitched to a tree near by, and upon MtHI furtlier investigation it appeared that this tnule had made tracks directly from Lewis Allen's house. This circumstance, taken together with the fact that Lewis was out next morning with the bridle hunting his mule, while the aforesaid quadru|?ed wmk grazing in the barren , pasture, carrying his master's saddle on his back, was taken as ci?cum?tantial evidenee, that Lewis had rid?leu the beast to Mr. Douglas*' house, and that while Lewis was stesliug his neighl>or's meat j ?11e mule became disgusted with the whole proceeding, slipped his bridle and walked off, regardless of the trouble he was bringing ti|>on the man who had so long furnished him with oats and corn. The most important move on the political chess-board was the inauguration of Gen. Hampton as Governor, and Gol. Simpson as Lieutenant Governor. This took place on Thursday afternoon in front of Carolina Hail in prcwence of a large and enthusiastic crowd. The whole square extending out into main street was packed with men. The tops of some of the adjoining houses, and every available window was tilled with the ladies. A stage had been prepared next to the building, covered with a beautilui carpet, a large arm-chair being placed in the centre for the Governor. _ Against the wall of the biulding was hung a large canvass, upon which was painted LIFE-SIZED PORTRAITS of Hampton and Simpson, draped with United States and Suito flags and decorated with three wreaths of evergreens and dowers. When Hampton and Simpson descended tho steps Irom the Hail, attended by the committee the impatient crowd, who had been kept in suspense for some time burst forth into a shout, that coming from the heart, made the welkin ring, while the air dashed with the white hankerchiel's, waived by tho FAIR WOMEN, from the housetops and windows. Upon the stand were also the members of the oieeutivo committee, United .States Senator T. J. Robertson, Judgo Mackey, and a M. P. fresh from the Green Isle. The members of the Senate and House stood next to the stand while the Governor read his inaugural address in thut clear, distinct, and steady tone characteristic of the man. READ IT and you will he-struck with the burning indignation which it breathed against the wrongs and outrages heaped upon our be'ovod State, grandly eminent in u glorious past, by, a vile^crew of aliens and strand-erg. Alter the address the OATB OF OFFICE was administered by Judge Mackey, the Governor repeating*word for word. Alter this ceremony thero was a rush to the >tand to shake tho "hand of the new Governor, so impetuous was it that I feared being crusneu against tne stand. Among chein wa* a largo number of colored men who from their looks, I am sure, were .sincere in their hearty congratulations. As he passed from the stage to the liall THE LADIES intercepted him and shook his hand, and little girls too, one of whom he stooped to kiss. The scene brought tears to many a patriots eye. When he came down from the hall he was captured and placed in an arm chair, upon planks across two scantlings, ande arried upontile shoulder* of a dozen men into the Wheeler house, amidst such enthusiasm as I have never before witnessed. And yet ALL IS NOT SECURE. After such an earnest, vigorous, and jieaceful campaign, fought against all odds, and the victory fairly won, it would be crushing to be deprived of its fruits. Nothing but foderal bayonets can wrest it from our grasp. Our people must STAND TOO ETHER, recognize no act of Chamberlain or his government, accept no commission from him, and disregard his pretended removals from ottice. The inauguration of Hampton was a "blow between their eyesand Simpson's formal claim of the presidency of the Senate by virtue of his .oillco as Lieutenant Governor has checked them. It was referred to the committee on the judiciary, and Cleaves has not occupied the seat since, waiting the report of tho committee. I presumo they will report that Gleaves was duly elected, and is thereby president of the Senate. If so I presume Simp ton will aithor sue out a quo warranto, or ORGANIZE ANOTHER SENATE, fill vacancios, and then we will have a complete governincnt ready for work. We have been stick ling on la'wpolnts, and constitutional quwstions too long. Wo are in ilio midst ot a revolution but having the most of law ou our side our steps should be bold and confident. Our people I am sure arcs willing to make sawifii-cs, and endime all things for the Hampton Government. If \*e grow faint and fail in this struggle wo are ruined. Hotter for a military government than the rule of Chamberlain and his roJubcr gang. We should not take extreme grounds against those who voted against lis at home?the common herd.
