I The Press and Banner. Wednesday, Dec. 13,1876. Tbe Lowndesville Tragedy. During the past week we have been unable to hear much that was definite from Jjowudesville in reference tothej assassination of Allen ami thedisposi-j ticti made of the prisoners arrented for tlie crime, and on yesterday morning; we dispatched u messenger to some of! the leading citizens, enquiring for a full statement of all the particulars, and last night at half-past ten o'clock the following letter was received ; Mr. Hugh Wilson : Peak Sir?Yours of lltli inst. is at hand and contents noted- In reply can only say that on the night of the 4tli inst. that the citizens of Lowndesville were aroused about 11 o'clock by the firing of a j number of guns, and unusual yelling, in h few minutes Mr. T. (i. Haker reported that be and C. S. Allen who were riding I up the street, near the Presbyterian Church, were shot at by a number of jx?rsou3 in auibusii. A number of the citizens repaired to the spot and found Mr. Allen dead. An inquest was immediately held, and upon examination found that he had received several gun shot wounds, two of which were mortal. Warrants were issued and many were arrested and quite a number confessed as to their being present. All of whom were colored. There are various rumors as to the cause of this murder but as to the facts in the cas? we know nothing. J A M KS M. L ATI M ER, J. li. ijr. uu i , J. 11. MOSKLEY. We hail the pleasure of a call on yesterday evening from a reliable gentleman who was at Lowndesville from first to last, from whom we obtained i some interesting statement*, which we think will give additional ideas of the true situation. It would iml lie exaggerating to say tljat L'-ivvmlesville never saw .such day*; of excitement., The enormity of the crime committed by the negroes and the report of the THREAT TO MASSACRE THE WHITES, ho opportunely frustrated, fceemed miftfcieiil in Hie judgment, of many, to justify the summary lynching of th^ confessed murderers, and it was with great effort that wiser counsel prevailed ; but we are gratified to publish the fact that the law-abiding jtoliey was adopted, and that the outraged citizens preferred that the law should mete out justice to these offenders. The negroes agree in their statement that they had NOTHING AGAINST ALLEN or anv narticular person. Their "or-| der?" were to tire on anybody whol might pass that way, and when the negro returned, after he had given up the chase for Baker, lie told his comrades that they had killed one man, for lie stumbled over the body, but did not know \vho it was. As it was determined that THEY SHOULD NOT BE LYNCHED, but should be taken to jail, the guard started from Lowmlesvjlle to Abbe- j ville, but the general impression seems I to be that the guard were afraid J that the prisoners in their charge would be released by their friends, while others believed that the guard j thought it probable that an armed | body of whites might attempt to lynch them. For these reasons they changed j their route and went to Anderson, in - i stead of coming to Abbevile. ON* MONDAY the Abbevilie people were exceedingly anxious as the fate of ihe prisoners j and our Sheriff. Mr. J. V. Jones, telegraphed to the.Sheriff of Anderson! to know if they were there.
