?n?om?ara i m o?ct?i The Press and Banner. ABBEVILLE, S. C. Wednesday, Oct. ?5,1876. Fast Day. To-morrow has been appointed as a day of fasting, humiliation and prayer, and the day will be observed in Abbeville. The Baptists, the Presbyterians ami the Methodists will worship at the Methodist church at eleven o'clock in the morning and in the Presbyterian church at candle-light, the Rev. Brethren Pratt and Wightman conducting the services. On last Sunday night the Rev, Mr. Martin, of the* Presbyterian clinch ably and clearly discussed the subject of fasting. He said it had been customary since the days of Moses for christians to fast at stated times, and referred to his fast of forty days as a miracle, for otherwise his phvsical na 1 "if Wn^t. lure couiu iiul unvc ruuuicu u. * v?.-v ing is the outward sign of inward grief, and grief has the efl'ect of preventing the desire for food. Fasting meant not only abstinence from Wbd and water but also the refraining from participation in the every (lav business of life, as well us denying of ourself the ordinary enjoyment of social intercourse. It was our duty on such days to read God's word and meditate on the requirements of his laws. For special instructions he commended his hearers to the careful reading of the ten commandments a* delivered to Moses and the children of Israel on Mount Sinai. He warned his hearers that the "object of lasting was not to propitiate God, as many persons, anJ especially members of the Romish faith, are too apt to think. We can perform no meritorious act, and our presumption that we can do so Is especially offensive to the giver of every good and perfect gift. Grace is the gift of God aud not tlie reward of merit in us. To presume that there was merit in fasting or any other act of ours was too much like the publican of old who*fasted twice a week aud thanked the Lord that he was not as other men are. We should pray in our closets, but should * t- - ? frv rvroif hnmlilv hpfoTft I JHH liC JH i am w j men. Fasting was intended as a day for self-e*amination, self-abasement| and the acknowledgement and confes- j xion of our sins, accompanied with I prayer for our encmivs. ?????? The Republican Convention. The Republican county nominating convention consisting of 71 delegates from the various precincts was in session all day yesterday: Isaac H. White was elected chairman, ami J. R. Tolbert, W. H. Heard, A. B. Griffin and L. C. Waller were appointed Secretaries. We were not admitted to a .seat 011 the floor but we learn that the meeting was a harmonious one,! and the members were altogether lovely. Mr. T. N. Tolbert was promptly nominated for the Senate by j acclamation, but when it came to nominations for the lower House, the, work did not progress so rapidly. I Twenty-one members of the convention were nominated, and each man nominated was of course eulogized for the space of about live minutes, which consumed :t good portion or tiie day. As far as we arc able to learn the ballot stood: W. M. Pope, 47 W. H. Heard, 47 }(. A. Wideman, US ltov. I?. F. Porter, 5*0 I. H. White, M J IX. McKeller 21 .las. A. Spencer -1 Robert Griffin 2t) Mitehel Gn^ins, IEveradge Cain 2 The entire delegation Tor the lower House is colored. The first tive names mentioned above were nominated. At the conclusion of this woik, the convention rested from their labors at o o'clock, until this morning al X o'clock when that body will re-assetrble in the Court H<>u*e, and (lie following further nominations will probably be made: L. L. Guffin, for Clerk of Court, C. \Y. Guffin, for Sheriff, T. ]*. Milford, for Probate Judge, W. li. Tuiruart and two colored men for County Commissioners. Treason. The people of South Carolina should remember that Gov*. Chamberlain wh:> has been elevated to office by Ihe iNejjro-Union League of South Carolina lias now virtually declared it treason fur the respectable people of the St<te to organize themselves into democratic clubs. Freeman, will you consent for this tyrant longer to rule over us ? Hilliakd Harper a colored school teacher i:i tlie Lowndesville section and heretofore {lie most influential Republican in the neighborhood was converted to Democracy on the 18th instant. He returned from Abbeville in company with B. A. Davis and Drs. lleckham and Mosely. when the party arrived at Lowndes vilie. Dr. Beckham asked Harper to make a speech, he consented and mounted the steps of T. Baker, and made one of the best speeches ever heard from a color* d man. He said that he was satisfied, that he had heard the Radical speakers and was disgusted, that he was willing to say that the Radical meetiug was a failure, perfect and complete. He closed by proposing three rousing cheers for "Governor Hampton." The War Excitement in Europe.?The tone of the foreign de*patch<ft continue of a threatening nature, and it is held in some quarters that a state of war between Russia and Turkey already practically exists. 'Pliitt limi'fvcr. is merelv one way of putting '.lie fact of the well known material aid and active sympathy given by the Russians tothe struggling Servians^ and the further fact that the Russian (jovcnimeut has for some time been preparing for the emergency of actual war and at present occupies a menacing attitude towards Turkey. Tub Storm Branch Colored Baptist Association met at Zion church, about live miles west of Xiiiety-Six on Friday and adjourned on Sunday last. This is the largest Colored Association in the State, and embraces the counties of Edgefield and Aiken. There are several churches in the Association with from five hundred to six hundred members, and one church, Mt. Canaan, has twenty-two hundred and twenty-three members. Messrs. E. S. Hale, R. M. White, Maj. l-ouche, J. W. Fouche, J). M. Moore, Rev. Rroaddus.and T. L. Moore, were present at the adjournment and received the "Parting Hand." Didn't Likk to oo by Hodges. ?Some of the Republican headlights ivimr. fn Mi.' Iiiir Im't'jilur on lasl Wednesday didn't like the idea of going to Anderson by Hodge*, and to avoid parsing that place hir?d vehicles to carry them to lionaldsville. They were not. afraid of being killed at Hodges, bnt then some of tlie b<?ys about there have such an ill-inanncred way of "cussing." Wic give sonic dots of what was said . by the Kadi on Wednesday, not that there was anything especially interesting to Democratic readers but wt thought it but right to show the people of our county what was said by tin radicals since they refused the white people a chance to hear them. Of course we have not put in all that was said. It would take a whole paper to do that. There is do doubt enough ct it however. Bisirop Howe accompanied by the Rev. Mr. Kershaw, visited Willington last week. Owing to the Democratic meeting here, the congregation was composed chietly of ladies. The Bishop administered the sacrament of baptism and Mr. Kershaw preached. The Lord's Supper was also celebrated. The Bishop returned to town on Thursday and left for Anderson on Saturday morning. We have received a beautiful tribute jii memory of Dr. Stuart, which was rowdcd out this week. I " I Wednesday. I Large Mis of Bemacrats aid ; BepaMicans. ' Democrats -J ubilant. The (irrat Enthusiasm and Doinonstration of the Democrats Discourj aire the llepnblicans--The Colored Democrats as True as Steel. ! The Democrats ami the Republicans ! held big meetings at tlus plaee on J Wednesday hut ami everything passed otr quite pleasantly and satisfactorily to all the parties. The Republicans seemed satisfied and the DemoI crats were jubilant. As we staled last j week the Republicans refused to "divide time" with the Democrats. Tliej J Republicans assembled their masses i at the I)ep<?t and marched to the colored Fair Grounds in Fort Pickens. J The Democrats assembled on DeJ Rruhl's park and marched through j town, then down by the Depot and i round by Magazine Hill, and back to the Public Square, where they halted; [at the Alston House corner in front of j the /Vow and Manner oinee, wir-iii stirring speeches were delivered by j ! Messrs. Cothran, McGowan, Thomson, j Burl, Jlood, *\V. K. Bradley, J. E. Bradley and Hemphill. The enthu-| isiasm of our people was sublime and j :gave additional evidence of their ear-! j 11 estness in a cause which so vitally, affects the whole country. Our men j now are more hopeful ot success than ever. There were at our meeting about 2,u()0 mounted men and several hundred on foot, and besides ! the white men some live hundred coljored men, and although the Republicans had predicted that the colored i Democrats would desert our ranks either before or at the election, they proved themselves as true as steel on this occasion. As far as we know only two colored men deserted us, and one of them came back in the evening after attending the Republican meeting. The President, Young, of the club from [ which he deserted, at first refused to allow him to rejoin, but he insisted and finally the President left ii to a vote of the club and upon the second ballot he was received back into i- the cow puny and invested with the blue shirt wnieh he had thrown aside in the morning. A dinner had been prepared for all Democratic colored people that might he in attendance, and it is said, that one of the leading Republicans declared that we need not prepare dinner tor a hundred, but we fed more than four hundred colored men in nni! form who are as true to us as possible. [ We believe their Republican friend* slander them when they say that these men will desert us VVe know they will do no such thing. Their action that day showed that they are in fact freemen, and that they defy the Republicans any longer to rule them arbitrarily. The crowd of Republicans were disappointed i:i not having some of the more prominent members of theii party to address them. They had expected tiie (Governor, and when they found out that he was not here, thee? feet was perceptible. Few of the speakers had over been 'hoard of by n majority of those present, and they failed to inspire the enthusiasm which is so much needed in the Republican party. From iho highest to the lowest it seems to uj that despondene\ rests ujHin them like a funeral pall. There is great difference beiweeii thei: meetings and ourtnvn. Although we have hud many meetings, our peoph never seem to grow tired, wliih the Republicans at this, their first meeting, before the third speaker had finished, showed plainly a resilesdispo*:!ion and began to scatter off in groups, nud when ihe fourth speaker j had finished it is estimated that not I more than one-third of the erowc j were paying any attention at all to what I was beiugsaid from the stand. At a little after I wo o'clock the chairman ?i i - I missed the meeting, and advised ul: t<> Jiro quietly homo, which they did, pa*-i inic through town by the less frequent ji*d streets, avoiding the groat and eulihusiustic meeting of Democrats I which was still going on in the public square. Our meeting continued until I after four o'ciock. i ~ Banana Tree, from Floral Hill.?Mr. J. F. C. HuPre, ot'our town, had in front of his store on IThursday last a banana tree, twelve or fifteen feet high and six inches I ir. diainater at the base, with a quantity of ripe fruit on it. The tree grew | in his hot house, on Floral Hill. Mr. i DuPre has the greatest quantity o; the rarest flowers which he is soiling at low figures. TnrcRadshad high-jinks at their precinct meeting in the court house on Saturday. We were not allowed to see Hie show, but learned that Everidge Cain and William Pope took occasion in themiddle of the meeting to practice the manly art of pugilism. The Pads had a little love-feast on Monday night in the Court House. William Jackson a colored man on Maj. li. A. Grilliu's plantation near Ninety-Six was badly cut with a Unife in the hands of a colored Radical on last Saturday night. Dr. Boazniail has been called to the relief ol the wouuedd man. Thk colored Radicals denounce the colored men who have the manhood : to express their Democratic sentimenisi | and say that they will eat Democratie j bread but will vote the Republican (ticket. We think by such assertions) ; they slander the race.
