', ' j A paper was read at the meeting of lie Academy of Medicine, last evenig, at the College of Physicians and nrgeons, by J)r. Tilton Brown, M. )., upon "Mental peculiarities." The ubject did not include insanity, but ' ertain singularities, or the early offhoots of what are liable to burn into cccntricity, or absolute insanity. Very few persons are perfectly b'al:nced in mind. In some a portion of he powers necessary to success are "'"""nt- hut. tliov nre not able to sue /ivvv,,vj - J. :eed because tbeir minds are not'balmeed. Somo are able to conceal ,beir deficiencies for a time, but when .hey are placod in unwonted circumstances they prove lamentable failires. We meet this much in private life jverywhere. A lawyer who has had great success at the bar may become a by-word upon the bench. ]Ie was 6tted for one position, and, leaving that, ho found himself out of place. Another phase of mental peculiarity is that of men who lack steadiness. They arc constantly forming new sfhpmes?revolving new plans, some times sncccssful and sometimes not. In absent mindecincss the person is unable to separate the world within from tho world without. Among other peculiarities which fall short of disease is eccentricity. It is sometimes one of tnc first indications of insanity. In the majority of eases the distinction between eccentricity and insanity is well marked. In eccentricity tho peculiarity is in manner; the operations of tho mind arc correct. In .the insane it is the contrary. Defects arc not in tho mental qualities alone, but exist also in tho moral. To these, principles is nothing; circumstances everything. No friendship can stand in the way of their ad' van cement. Some men arc al\v&3Ts suspicious, and alwaj^s fear some design egaiijst them. Some men have a very defective idea of truth. They lie, even when the truth would bo better, or color and exaggerate when the}* do not lie. The lecturer concluded with some very laughable examples of this peculiarity. Probabilities. ? The following bents old probabilities out of sight: When you sec a man going home fit two o'clock in the morning, and know his wife is waiting for him, it is likely to be 'stormy.' When a man receives a bill for goods his wife bought unknown to him, look out for 'thunder and lightning.' When a man ?oes home and finds no supper ready, the fire gone out, and his wife crusading, it is likely to be 'cloudy.' When a man promises to take his wife to a party, and changes his mind alter she is dressed, you may expect a 'shower.' When a man saves liis cigar money to buy hie wife a new bonnet and the children new shoe?) it indicates a spell of sunshine. When a man dies and leaves a nicc young widow with plenty of money, and you see her walking out with one of the executors on Sunday, c changc is imminent.
