Editor Prow and Banner: It may be some amusement, if not interst, to your readers to hear a report of the great meeting at Calhoun's Mills on Saturday last. It had been aunounced that Governor Moses, General Elliott, nn'l -Tiulcrp Pooke would bt? nresent on ' the occasion. Of course such a statement would gather a large crowd anywhere, and at any time. But only Judge Cooke appeared. I now regret that I ' did not take full notes of the proceedings. It was in the order of exerciscs to ( have the Declaration of Independence read; but not one copy of that great chart of American liberty could be found in the vicinity. After some explanatory or introductory remarks by the big shoe-maker of Mt. Carmel? Whos'e name I have forgotten?Charles x iiogan, the ofticer of the day, introduced ( B. \V. Reynolds, of Wisconsin, as the i first speaker. Mr. Reynolds delighted his audience for about half an hour with ' pleasant reminescenses of the past, and ( brieht prospects for the future. < The next speaker was His Honor, < Judge T. H. Cooke. After some refer- 1 ence to "the day We celebrate," and the history of the nation, the Judge launch- < ?d dut into the political situation, show- < ingthe necessity for reform, and pointing ' out the most feasible plan for attaining < the end desired. Upon the whole, the speech was well received, and in keep- I . ing with the reputation of the distinguished Judge. Representative Wideman was next I called upon to address the meeting. He ; t speut much of his time ill combatting . the position taken by Judge Cooke, that i a dishonest official was more dangerous < than an ignorant one. He and othei Sjteakers labored to show that ignorance / had b&erf a greater cllrse to the party i and country than dishonesty?that most < f\f !?? Avila nnmnlfiined of could hi traced to ignorance, either directly 01 indirectly. Representative Tolbert was the next speaker. He asssiled the Judge pointedly and powerfully. He charged the Judge witn an intention and el fort to control the political ad'airs of the Conn- i ty, and warned him against such 11 t fcourse, not only as fruitless, but unbeComing his position. He was very severe upon several other political Judges in the StAte. Mr. Tolbert also charged the ' Judge with advising the people to throw ofT all the old officers, because it would be almost impossible to separate the sheep from the goats. On this point Mr. Tolbert was really eloquent, and Challenged Judge Cooke or any other man to convict him with any official 1 fraud or corruption. Yesterday evening this city was visited by a severe iiurricade and rain, tho results of which may be seen all over the eity. The flagstaff of the National Hotel fell with a crash near several persons who were standing on the pavement, and the stee- * pie or the Matropolitan Methodist Episcopal Church, at least 100 feet in height, xvus tsuch shattered, having beew -aiov?ed five feet from its perpendicular. It is now in a dangerous condition and roa.v have to be rebuilt. In addition to toe destruction of the street lamps, lieavy platq glass iu the show windows was broken. In a number of cases, trunks of trees... vo or three feet in circumference were snapped by the hurricane, and ornamental and shade trees all over the city, including a number in the capitol and President's mansion and ^public parks, were either entirely destroyed or 6born of their branches. Five Jiouses In one row were completely stripped of their roofs. Several carriages passing along the 6tree>ts were completely overturned, one of the lady occupants sustaining a severe injury.
