Cobb, a citizen of Abbeville, and made oath that he was present at ji . conversation held on the 13th Febru ary, 1S73, between Lawson, the Abbeviilo Postmaster, and the * Elberton mail-carrier, in wh eh th* latter in reply to certain questions propounded by Mr. Lawson, answer ed as follows:- -That he is the regu lar mail-carrier on the lower or Jleardmont route to Elberton, Ga., ?that he was present at different times at the opening of tlio mails on this route, but that he never saw any mail-matter returned from Abbevilh c which bad been sent lo that olfu-u from Elberton?and that he never heard any postmaster say, that any ttnch mail-matter had been returned which should ^have been distributed nt Abbeville. The Deponent further states that he was present at another eonversa tion between the samo parties on the 20th. February, 1873, in which the mail-carrier in reply to questions pro }>ounded by Mr. Law son, said?that 10 was present on one occasion at tin opening of the mail at "Dry Grove,' and did sec a letter and ono or two papers put; in uie ijjiwj-uu<j uv i/'-n postmaster, to be sent to Elberton, but did not see them taken from the inai! bag, and could not say that they came from Abbeville?could not say at what time this occurred. The Deponent was present at an other conversation between tho sunn parties on the 27th February, 1873, when tho mail-carrier upon hearing read an editorial of the previous issut of the Elberton Gazette, said that the statement of tho editorial in relation to himself was incorrect?that he was not present at the time referred to in the editorial, and could not say what mail-matter cameto Abbeville Kflt r\n liia wtiirn ho Hifl hpn.p Mrs Oox, who opened tbo mail s<iy, that there were ono paper and letter, which were there the day before? but of this he know nothing person all}'. The Deponent farther states that he was present at a conversation held }\ short time since between Mr. Law son, and Mr. Daniels, the Postmaster ut l)ry Grove, in wTiich the latter said?that for the most part ho was present at the opening of his mail, and that he never saw any mail-mat ter, which should have been distribu ted at Abbeville, returned to his of fice?neither did he ever hear his wife who sometimes opened the mail make any such complaint?that at one time there was a letter sent to his office which should have been seni in the mail to Calhoun's Mills, but could not eav where that letter was mailed. This conversation occurred aflor the first publication of the. El berton Guzctle* J. H. COBB Sworn before me. this finst day of March, A. I) 1878. LEWIS. D. BOWIE, C. C.
